2013 models available from Amazon for good prices at moment too. 2013 model 16GB as low as £135 (€166) in used very good condition here or €185 euro brand new (not warehouse) here

That is the older 2012 version. Not a great bargain at that price. Only 1gb ram and 1mp camera.

Much better than some of the tablets at this price, for general speed amd use anyways. Especially any of the Samsung ones.

I agree. I initially bought one in 2012 but upgraded to a 2013 recently. Because I still had the Asus dock I decided to pick up one of these for €125.

The real question I have for people saying it isn't a good deal is please point me to a better tablet at the same price!

Now that's good value! These are still great tablets and will perform admirably with anything you through at them - I know this cause my kids really put it through the mill and it never blinks.

Agreed, I still use the one I bought when they were released, and haven't had any reason to complain or upgrade. I'll stick with Nexus when I do, but I'll probably wait for version 3....

have one of these for the past year, have to say its excellent and cant fault it, its:
    - pretty fast( install tonnes of apps and it will slow down, same as a phone, android problem in general ), generally is pretty snappy.
    - 3D games look really good on it( coming from someone who has a 600euro gfx card in my PC and play on 3 screens - i.e. gfx whore )
    - i dont find the resolution a problem on it( i mean compared to the newer tablets ), i use it for ereading, games, browsing, youtube, email, watching tv shows
    - wifi range is really good( but you need a good wifi router also obviously ), but i can watch youtube outside and a good 15m from the wifi router
    - battery life is great, ive used it on flights for 6 hours solid watching movies and still have battery left, general use( some youtube, email, web browsing ) it needs a charge every 2-3 days
    - gets google OS updates a few days after they are announced. My android 4.4 update installed today, was announced last week.

    OK so now the negatives
    - audio volume is absolute crap through the headphone jack, you NEED amplified headphones if youre going to use this on a plane, its okish otherwise. The speaker is quite good, i can hear it easily in the garden with loads of other noise around in the summer.
    - doesnt have a camera on the back of the tablet so taking a pic with it is a pain in the ass.

Honestly the negatives are minor, its a fantastic tablet and i would highly recommend it. For the price its a steal, i might actually get another at that price.

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

Looks good, might just get one.
Can it be used with a SIM card so I can make calls on it too?

No SIM card slot on the Nexus 7.

wow i'm really on the fence about getting this or not, its a great price for a 32gb quad core tablet, but then again its a two year old tablet,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 705 ✭✭✭kaahooters

There going for £99 in argos up north, so I got 2, ones an upgrade for myself and ones for my dad.

It's doubtful it will get the next Android version as it cannot run the new Android runtime (Art)

True, but mine's running 4.4.4, and flying with that.

Mine isn't, I've done a factory reset and still have serious lag. There is a major hardware issue with the storage on the device, there is no trim support therefore I wouldn't advise anyone buy the 2012. Plus like I said already it's support days are numbered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,464 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

also find the 7" form factor a bit small, 8" would be nicer! Probably right about it not running full functionality for the next OS update as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭.G.

I have 2 of them, one bought the other day which instantly updated to 4.4.3 and then 4.4.4. The other which I bought in 2012 is still on 4.4.2 and says no updates are available! what gives?

  • Yeah it's totally nuts with my two as well. I was hitting "check updates" or whatever because it was on an earlier version and it was saying it was up to date...even though we all know 4.4.4 is out there. God knows how Google's working it.

I read it's random so everyone isn't hitting at once

Download and run the Forever Gone android app. It sorts the problem out.

€124.99 is an absolute bargain for the Nexus. Buy it if you want a cheap tablet that performs very well. I've had mine since it launched and it's great. I cracked the screen last summer and it cost me €120 just to fix the thing (myself).

I have tried that both before and after a factory reset and its not made a difference. I need to flash Cyanogen and change the filesystem, it's a known issue, the storage does not support trim therefore this lag will always exist

Thanks for that update. At €125 it falls into the "no brainer" category for someone like me looking for a good quality tablet that doesn't necessarily have to be the latest and greatest.

Mine's already updated to 4.4.4. Now I just have to find a cover for it. :)

You could try Mini In The Box, just ordered one there for €8.23.

Look for one with a screen-wake magnet built in.

I'd recommend the Poetic Slimline case, can be bought from Amazon uk. I got it for the 2013 nexus 7, really good quality and has a magnet to keep closed with sleep/wake function too. I paid around 16 euro, not sure of the price for 2012 nexus.

    €124.99? What a price!

I had the 2012 Nexus 7 before and I've the 2013 one now but if I hadn't I'd definitely get this!

There's a special offer for a cover at half price from Argos. The half price is €9.99. The big problem was that there was none in stock anywhere except in Letterkenny. My local store told my OH that they would honour that offer, IF the item comes back into stock.

    OK, sorry for asking.

For those with decent sized smart phones, would this be worth getting?

TBH, mine is only used for video now. I have a Note for phone, browsing, email etc.

Can these be used as ereaders? Wife's kindle is banjaxed and this looks a good deal.

Also, I don't think they have hdmi output do they? What's the best value 7" tablet(or any size) with hdmi out there atm?

Yip. Just install the Kindle app. As great a price as this is, I wouldn't fancy it for an e-reader. The screen just isn't up to it on the 2012 version.

Just get a Nook for 30quid as an ereader, tablets can be too bright for your eyes with excessive reading

Turn the brightness settings down :P

If you are getting the nexus 7 for reading books and text as the main function, put the extra few quid together and get the 2013 edition. A much better screen for not that much more cash. If you can find one used on Adverts or Donedeal, even better.

Tablets are no good for reading outside in the sunshine

Still have issues with glare regardless of brightness settings. The Nook is a great piece of kit for the money

Where can I get a Nook for that price? Is that new or used?

  • You need an e-Ink display to read outside in sunlight. The Nooks are nice because they have e-Ink but also run a version of Android. They can be rooted and support a few apps well (don't expect to be playing Modern Combat 4 on them!).

Although I have read that sales of eReaders have been in decline as many people don't want both a tablet and eReader and sacrifice the latter.

I'd recommend the obvious places like eBay to pick one up. Also keep an eye on Bargain Alerts or head over to HUKD and search for "Nook" to see if there's any deals around at the moment.

I compared the 2012 version to the 2013 model and found the difference immense there seems to be lag on the 2012 model when swiping on the screen didn't see that on the 2013 model, it put me right off the 2012 model. Also I see amazon have cut the price of the paper white ( pain as I only picked one up in argos a few weeks ago), I prefer reading on the paper white as my eyes get tired reading on a tablet
