Mine said Custom House but that came up in 2011..

Edit: Actually, it may have been Casino Marino. Why do I never listen? :(

I had no idea what they were until I looked them up hahaha! My teacher said that she's almost definite a public sculpture will come up in appreciation so to have the describe, analyse, interpretation & judgement thing learned!

I think bronze age and maybe newgrange for section one.. my logic being that la tene came up last year and neither bronze age or stone age have...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 peanut.lover22

section 1: newgrange, bronze age, crosses and metalwork and casino marino

section 2: romanesque and gothic architecture and sculpture, Giotto, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael and impressionism

section 3: film, exhibition, public sculpture and design

Hope this helps people, this is what my teachers think and they normally get it right each year! :)

God I hope impressionism comes up. Any ideas on what the film question could be like?

I never do the film question but from looking at past papers they ask about visual techniques like lighting, costumes, set etc. as well as film techniques. I'd suggest going through past questions and marking schemes to get a better idea. :)

From studying past exam papers it seems to be that the pattern in (section 1 Georgian question) is 2006: Stucco, 2007: building (Casino), 2009: building, 2010: architect(s), 2011: architect(s), 2012: building and 2013: building. Whether or not the question mentions a single/multiple architect(s) or building(s) varies however if one was to to base their prediction purely on this pattern then the assumption might be that a Georgian architect will come up. If one was to base their prediction on what has not surfaced in quite some time then The Casino at Marino and Stucco Plaster-work would appear to be the most likely of candidates. I personally think that a question on Stucco is very unlikely. Furthermore I think learning The Casino at Marino would be a safe enough topic to study regardless if the question being asked is solely about its architectural features because if a question was to be asked about multiple architects then The Casino at Marino could be rather easily incorporated into your answer e.g-

    2010

    Answer (a), (b) and (c).
    (a) Select one of the following architects and name a building designed by him:
     Richard Cassels (c.1690-1751)
     Edward Lovett Pearce (1699-1733)
     Francis Johnston (1760-1829)
     William Chambers (c.1723-1796)
     Thomas Ivory (c.1732-1786).
    (b) Discuss the building you have chosen and describe its style and architectural features.
    (c) Name and describe briefly one other Irish Georgian building by the same architect.

    OR

    2006

The Casino at Marino, designed by William Chambers (1723 – 1796), is considered to be one
of the finest examples of Irish Georgian architecture. Describe and discuss the function,
design, exterior architectural features and interior decoration of this building
and compare it briefly with one other named Georgian building that you have studied.
    Illustrate your answer.

I am predicting an architect to surface but ,personally, I would recommend focusing on Castletown House, Edward Lovett-Pearce, William Chambers, The Casino at Marino and a Georgian terraced house e.g Henrietta Street 9, Dublin.

Our teacher told us that in the past the SEC have tended to ask a question in section II about artists who may have been exhibited in the national art galleries across Ireland during the year.

The Dublin city gallery has received the collection of four impressionist artists this year. Renoir being included. A question on him hasn't came up since 2009. Could be worth your while knowing him well

Georgian buildings, pre Christian metalwork for Irish.
Raphael, Michelangelo, Romanesque sculpture and surrealism and maybe Botticelli for European.

I answered on Castletown House and still got marks :p

I doubt they'll do that in the LC though. I have to learn them.

I was so tempted to that as well. Instead drew basic terraced house with basic features and wrote a fake name in really small ineligible writing. I must say I dropped heavy marks :P!

I could have talked about terraced houses all day but I couldn't talk about the details of a specific terraced house so I took the chance haha

Just wondering does anyone know how you get full marks on an essay? For the mocks I learned an essay off on Edward Lovett Pearce and I wrote down everything and answered all the parts of the question and the sketches were grand and everything but I only got 40/50? I asked the teacher and she didn't give me a reason so I jus wondered if there's a certain plan you should follow or something??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭Red Hare

Its important to stick exactly to the question - the marking scheme follows the question exactly. Also - to get full marks in the sketches area you need to make a few sketches and clearly label them.

I wouldn't learn off essays for art history as the questions are never really the same and you need to answer what's being asked, I would just learn the information about the buildings and architects

They normally ask about a certain impressionist artist and their work, as well as the period of impressionism and how it came about and the influences. :) It helps to look at past papers and get an idea.

Would it be too risky to look at Surrealism only? :/

That's honestly what I want to do. I love it so much. :pac:

But I would definitely look at other stuff, impressionists maybe or renaissance cause you really never know with the art paper.
I was left stumped last year with the irish section and bluffed my way through a question on the Turret Stairs because we vaguely mentioned it once. ..:pac:

So if I know Georgian Architecture and the Renaissance and a few impressionist and gothic painters would that be ok? :/

If you know that well, and score a few marks on the section 3 coupled with a good practical score, then you should at least get a C2
