There doesn't seem to be much in the media about the protests that have been going on in Brazil regarding concerns over the world cup, and nobody is really talking about it, and whether it's ethical to support / watch the matches. So I'm curious, does anybody on boards care? Will you be specifically not watching any in protest, or do you not give a **** about it? Do you even know what the protests have been about?

I'm not mad into football, far from it, but my boyfriend would be interested, and will be watching some matches, so I might end up seeing some. Though as the time draws closer, I am asking myself should I be ok to do that. I haven't decided yet.

Tell us, do you care, not care, hadn't thought about it?

Ye Olde official World Cup 2014 thread is here.

Whether you watch or not will make zero difference to the people of Brazil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,463 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

If you thought about that you probably need to boycott everything for one reason or another, just to be consistent

If I don't watch it will anything change? Nope, so yes I'm very happy to watch it.

I'm interested in the football on the pitch, the political bickering I'll leave up to the usual suspects.

Just wait till it gets to Qatar when we can't even have a drink if you go to watch it!

Then the sh1t will hit the fan.

    Maybe.
Bit I still can't imagine football people boycotting the games on tv.

And especially of Ireland qualify again - everybody will be glued to it.

I really enjoyed the last one and as I've just lost my job I'll be watching most of this one as well. Tis an ill wind and all that jazz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,894 ✭✭✭lertsnim

    I'll be watching every game

Looking forward to it. Almost glad Ireland didn't qualify though so don't have to listen to all the retarded Ole Ole stuff.

I didn't even know there was a world cup this year until a few days ago!

    Are Ireland in it?
    When does it start?
    What's going on in Brazil?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭Teyla Emmagan

I didn't realise there was any controversy about watching it/not watching it.

My "blocking out anything relating to football" filter is obviously working even better than I'd hoped.

Couldn't care less about the protests to tell you the truth.

Second World Cup living in Spain. *Groan*. I wouldn't mind if we qualified but when I support Spain, my hearts not in it at all, particularly when I'd like to see another country win this time.

I would imagine that the protests in Brazil will die down as their team progresses in the champonship. If they are knocked out early the $hit could hit the fan.

    Ireland are not in it.
    Starts in under two weeks
Basically they're really really poor and are angry that so much was spent on the stadia, and are worried about the effect on a number of things such as child prostitution.

They aren't as angry as they were a year ago, numbers of protestors are way down. ;)

No matter what country was hosting there'd be protests, way of the world these days.

No I wouldn't.be. I have many friends from Sao Paolo and they are disgusted with what's happening there. The poor get trampled on once again.

I don't think the debate was is football good or bad tbh.

The same people moaning about the WC will be posting from devices and using appliances put together by exploited factory workers.

So stop questioning everyone else until you're 100% ethical and then you can hop back up on that high horse.

Id say women are pissed off at the thought of the world cup hitting the tv.

Especially when it interferes with Cornation Street and Eastenders.

that, and the thousands of construction deaths over there in recent years

The brother is big into it so it'll be on the TV in the house anyway, I'll probably throw an eye at the fixtures that promise to be a bit of entertainment.

Most football matches bore the hole off me.

I'll be watching most of it but some of the games could well be a hard slog

I'll not watch out of protest against overpaid fairies tripping over their own shoelaces and acting out injuries that would merit an Oscar. I have no interest in Soccer and if they were to play in my back garden, I'd close the curtains.

Brazil has problems; the last Country that hosted it had problems; the one before them were imperfect too...

I'll probably watch a fair few matches. I don't think boycotting it will make a difference.

Oh no. The soap operas will be on at a different time some nights. Just cancel the World Cup now.

Ah yeah, I love the World Cup. I love the Euros too. Great months. The political bickering I shall also leave to the politicians. Hopefully it's a great World Cup.

I'll be watching every game I can I reckon. Club football's good and everything, but there's always a special atmosphere for international tournaments. It's just a shame we couldn't qualify *sigh*

Good point. I suppose I've just never been aware of any of the problems of the previous host countries.

I do find it odd that the media are generally ignoring it though. But I suppose, as is evident by attitudes here, the general public don't want to know about it. Funny really.

I think all the protests are being deliberately glossed over. The media don't want to focus on the slums and poverty they'd rather rattle on with lots of boring football crap. I have no interest in football so I won't watch any of it.

I'll be watching. Love the world cup nearly as much as I love the Olympics.

I think Belgium are the country to watch.

I think the riots outside will be more interesting to watch than most of these football matches.
