Sigh.. really dislike these signs of the commercial reality of professional sport.

I can understand new stadia sites being named a la Liberty Stadium but to sell traditional names like Lansdowne Road, Ravenhill and Murrayfield like this is so sad. Money talks.

I don't mind the Murrayfield one as the original name is still there, but I really don't like a total rename like here. Could be worse I suppose, it could be Irish Independent Park....

Yep, Leinster not playing their two biggest matches of the season there and refusing to remove all break clauses from their lease at the RDS has scared off a number of very interested companies.

More companies have been scared off by the RDS's over enthusiastic valuation of naming rights.

Wasn't there speculation that the naming rights for the RDS would be over €20m over 5 years? That seems quite a lot to me but then I'm no expert on these things.

Not sure what to think about Ravenhill changing it's name. But then if it means more cash to develop the game and to keep the big players here then maybe that's what we have to do.

10 years but yeah thats what they said wanted. 20 million over 20 years would have been possible (and supposedly was offered by the RDS in negotiations) but over 10 is just crazy.

I'm guessing it's because the name Kingspan has the french word pan in it, which means bread…….

Am I right in saying that the Ulster branch won't be getting all the money out of this that the money will go to the IRFU and it will be divied out from there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,973 ✭✭✭19543261

we ought to use this opportune tangent to talk about bread instead of rugby. i have been off white for half a year now; whenever i get my hands on some its like eating cake.

I don't think so. AFAIK the provinces keep any money that they generate themselves. So money from sponsorship, ticket and merchandise sales they keep, but prize money goes to the union.

Does the union or the branch own the stadium? That would probably have some effect.

If the branch the money stays in house as per your explanation if the union there would be some sort of split.

Finally!! I've been biding my time on these boards for years, listening to inane chatter about an oval ball, just waiting for this opportunity!

    So... soda bread! AMIRITE??! :D

likewise i've been masqurading as a rugby aficionado, subtly manipulating conversational proceedings in this direction with my cunning for the past four years. conventionality it also justifies my underwhelming contributions to this board.

soda bread: piling on the jam and butter is a must. cut them up into little soldiers.

Why is the poster off white bread? If I clear anything less than a full pan a day, the Kingsmill corporation call me up to check if I'm still alive.

    Anyway, back on topic! :P

Anything that makes Ulster rugby a shedload of money suits me. And I'm guessing that a 10 year exclusive deal must be worth a bob or two. Glad to see it is and Ulster and Irish branded sponsor too. Onwards and upwards I say.

Ormeau bakery Fruit soda toasted with proper butter FTW BTW

The buying of 02 Communications by '3' highlights this problem. The likelihood is that 'The O2' venue will become The 3 or some such nonsense. It means a place loses its identity and resonance. Mutterings are that the 'Aviva Stadium' wont be, within 5 years.

So the simple answer is ignore it. Its not 'Kingspan' effing Stadium, or the 'Aviva, or Irish Independent Park or The RDS featuring The Storbuckys Arena dancers. Itll always be Lansdowne, Thomond, Ravenhill and The Point Depot...

The majority of people call it by the sponsored name. I call the Aviva the Aviva, even though I told myself the exact same thing when they changed it from lansdowne road.

In fairness, Kingspan have been sponsoring Ulster rugby for years, have been in business a very long time and aren't going anywhere any time soon.

Good thing for the game imo. Companies put much needed money into rugby, the rugby teams have to offer basically nothing in return, and apart from a few fans who enjoy faux outrage, everyone is happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭postitnote

Plus more exposure for Kingspan brings more trade and local jobs for local people, who in turn spend their hard earned cash on tickets to rave.. er eh Kingspan.

    Win win win.

According to the Irish Examiner Ulster are getting £5 million over 10 years.

Shows how crazy the RDS was to want €20 million over the same period.

The only thing is that a) Leinster would be a bigger "brand" than Ulster (ugh, I feel dirty saying that) and b) the RDS gets a lot more media exposure than Ravenhill with showjumping, concerts, exhibitions etc etc.

Does seem like a massive gap though.

It's money for little to no effort on the branch's part. Happy days.

I completely forgot the O2 used to be called The Point, so at least one of them has worked.

There is nothing to prevent Kingspan being bought out and or renamed. It was only 5 years ago that Hibernian was rebranded as Aviva.

    Hibernian Stadium anyone?

Leinster move their biggest games to the Aviva which would be a big drawback for any would be sponsor. For instance, it would be a real kick in the teeth to someone like Liberty Insurance if the important games were moved from the Liberty 'Stadium' to the Aviva!

The RDS 's starting position was €15m over 10 years.
I must check if that has changed in the last year or so. It certainly wasn't as high as €4m per annum - that would have been approaching the same rate for the Aviva.

Also, the fact that Aviva have the naming rights for the "main" stadium would always mean that any insurer looking to get naming rights for the RDS would be seen as the poor relation.
