06 Passat TDI injector problems (considering changing car as a result)

Hi I'm just looking for some advice on a car I'm seriously thinking of buying, I'm currently driving a 2006 VW Passat 1.9TDI but am looking at getting a smaller car and am thinking of trading my Passat in for a 2007 Kia Ceed crdi 1.6 diesel, the Kia Ceed I'm looking at has 94000 miles on the clock compared to my Paasat 124000 miles on the clock. The Kia dealer is looking for €7400 for the Kia Ceed and said he will let it go for €2000 with my own, that's over the phone without even looking at my Passat. Now my Passat is in excellent condition and I'd be hoping to get him down to €1500 with my own. What do ye think of that deal? Also getting back onto the point of the post, what is the Kia Ceed crdi 1.6 diesel like reliability wise? Just don't want to buy it if there known to give trouble.

    Any advice thanks

But why do you want to pay 2k to downgrade to a ceed. The passat is a far nicer car IMO. Why do you want a smaller car as if it's to save money you won't save a whole lot. They would both do around the mpg granted the ceed is slightly cheaper tax but there's not much in it.

I bought the the car last year and I'm after putting a €1000 in repairs this year. It's seems to be a very troublesome car.

Id keep the passat. Youv owned it for a while and know its good.

Why sell it for something that doesnt live up to its claims of power or mpg. Especially mpg. And has a questionable lifespan

But that's the problem is it good. €1000 on repair this year and I've only owned it for less than a year.

I suppose it depends what you replaced as they do have certain common faults. But if they are fixed then they shouldn't go wrong again. 1.9tdi passats are known to be reliable cars. But to get back to your question the ceed are suppose to be very reliable. But it's still a 07 car with the guts of 100k miles on it there's know guarantee it won't need 1k euro spent on it too but I suppose that's the risk everyone takes with second hand cars. Drive the ceed and see what you think if your happy and like it then it's your choice everyone has different taste and you could certainly buy alot worst.

Early b6 Passats aren't all that painless to run.

It depends oh what the €1000 was spent on.

120,000 mile service on those 1.9 TDI engines are costly due to the timing belt needing replacement at that mileage. If thats what pushed the price up on the service then I would just keep the passat as that is just regular maintenance work and wont need to be done for another 60,000 miles.

The electronic handbreak calliper has giving trouble but that's all new now. I've also replaced an injector and that was grand for a week or so and now I'm getting the very same symptoms as I did before that led to the injector replacement so now it either the new injector giving trouble which is very unlikely but if so I've a years warranty with it or the more likely thing is another injector giving up on me. Another €400

I think you have to replace all the injectors, but you should have been given the option to recondition which is far cheaper.

The callipers are a common fault but you have that sorted now. As for the injector you need to get a proper mechanic that will diagnose the problem properly and not just replace random injectors. George dalton is a vw specialist independent in portloaise he is extremely good and highly recommended on here. There is other good garages around the country that are good. But with injectors in particular you need someone who knows what there doing.

I've got an diagnostic done on it and a cylinder was misfiring got that injector changed for a recondition one. Now I'm getting the same symptoms as I previously did but not as bad, so it def an injector starting to play up again. Portlaoise diesel injection were the company that replaced my injector. They are definately specialists

We got injectors done there before and they fcuked up every injector. They done the same with my uncles car. Useless is not the word. Tbh you can go into vw and get a brand new injector for 150-200 euro so how did you spend 400. If it's just one injector I'd tend to replace it with a new one and get it coded. No matter what happens I wouldn't be going back to that injector place unless you want 4 ruined injectors. That just my opinion of the place though.

Really **** it's hardly the same injector they replaced. Sure what can I do now really I'm prob better off now to trade the car in so.

    VW Passat diagnostic test
    1 injector R/C €260
    Labour €80
    + vat comes to €385

Well chances are they just didn't fix the broken injector correctly. They shouldn't have touched the rest if they were ok. You really need to bring it to a decent garage. But if you would genuinely prefer the ceed and don't like the passat trade it. But if it's just this problem putting you off get a proper mechanic to look at it rather than an injector refurb company. If you live near portloaise I would really suggest taking it to george he fixed and injector seal on my focus in the past and if I have any problems with my golf in the future I'll be heading to him. It will just give to you straight what's actually wrong and how much it will cost to fix. He is highly recommended by many users on this forum and others it's not just me.

Ill be going to George in future thanks for the recommendation. The diagnostics said one cylinder was misfiring and then they used a reconditioned injector, Would they of just reconditioned my old injector or would they of replaced it with a different one? If it's more than likely that they didn't fix that one right and I have the 1 years warranty I should really bring it back down to them seen as I've parted with €385. I rang them about it and they said that it is very unlikely that its the reconditioned injector. They said if one injector goes there properly another one not to far behind it.

Guys what are the chances it's the same injector. When the diagnostics was done there was only one cylinder misfiring. That injector was replaced with a reconditioned one (don't know whether my own injector was reconditioned or it was a different reconditioned injector installed). I noticed after about a week the same symptoms still existed but not near as bad. I have a feeling though that the problem was there from day one after receiving the car back because only after a week was the first time I really dove the car on hard (motorway driving). What ye think guys same injector or different one?

    Thanks

Hi guys my previous post was moved to buying so I'm goin to start up a new thread bout my problem I've got with my 2006 VW Passat 1.9 TDI. My car has had some symptoms since I bought it last year it was only a couple of months ago I brought it for a diagnostic test and that showed up that there was one cylinder misfiring, so the injector was replaced with a reconditioned one (not sure whether my old injector was reconditioned or whether is was different reconditioned one). Anyway after about a week of getting the repair done I noticed the same symptom still existed as previous but not as bad or not as often but then again after a week of the repair was the first time I really actually drove the car on hard (motorway drive). So my question is do ye think it is the same injector giving me the problem (not fixed properly) or now it's a different one playing up. Any advice thanks

gonna keep this all on one thread to save confusion - colm_mcm

First thing I'd do is call the garage that worked on it and tell them the symptoms are back after only a week, more to see what their attitude is at this stage. You need to report it to them anyway.

The next thing I'd do is bring it to George (I go to him myself and he's excellent - very knowledgeable, will do what's needed not what will inflate the bill, and give you an honest opinion) and let him look at it to see what he thinks.

Then I'd bring it back to the first crowd and demand they fix it properly OR, depending on what's wrong and the cost, let George do the job right instead.

Bear in mind too OP - the car will be worth LESS on trade in with an issue - then if its working well.

so if it costs (for example) 600 euro to make the car right - in reality - that will be

    a) cheaper then changing the car.

    b) You could run it for another while - and you will have got more use out of the car - and still be able to trade it in or sell in a years time.

Having a chat with George Dalton is the way to go I think

The injectors are a known issue, did you ring VW?
I had a B6 Passat, 2.0TDI and the injector went, looking online there was a recall for the injectors, so I rang VW Castleknock with the chassis number and sure enough, they replaced them all for free. Also if you have already replaced one, they should refund you for it

That recall isn't applicable to the 1.9 tdi afaik.

It related from what I can recall - to the Siemens injectors on 2.0 TDi 170 PDs (NOT common rail) - and I thought SOME 140s as well

Yep, 05-08 2.0 TDI PD engines, not the newer (08+) CR type or 1.9 TDI models

My last Passat (140) had all 4 injectors replaced up north for free under the recall as a precaution about 6 months before VW IRL finally caved and acknowledged the issue.

If buying an older B6 Passat (or any VW/Audi of that vintage with that engine), you should make sure the injectors were done under that recall.

The dealer more than likely wants to wash out the 07 kia. Its likely a sitter, as its not an 08. Also, he knows he will sell the passat handy...as they sell handy regardless of the year.

    Decide carefully op.

And what about the fact that the OP only wants rid of the Passat because it is giving him bother? Same situation in reverse :pac:

OP, the only way to know whether or not it is the same injector or not is if:

    1. You know which injector was at fault previously, and;
    2. You get a diagnostic scan done now and see what fault codes are stored.

The OP wants rid of a car that he has a problem with, the dealer may be trying to get rid of a car that they have a problem with. Tis all he is saying.

As you said, the OP should be careful. It is probably a reasonably easy fix for the Passat where the dealer may be trying to offload a lemon in terms of saleability.

Quick update I went and got a diagnostics done there today and now cylinder 3 and 4 are the problem. I previously got injector 2 replaced a couple of months ago. I think this has made up my mind to trade it in now.

By any chance by changing the fuel filter could this help. Could this be a blockage to the cylinders. Can't understand why the rest are failing just after replacing the other injector.

The Kia Ceed I was looking at is from Kia dealer so I will probably get a 6 month/year warranty so if anything was gonna go wrong with it, it would probably go wrong in that timeframe.

When you say " and now cylinder 3 and 4" are the problem - is that injectors again???.

If so - injectors can fail on any diesel car - imo - and if you think about logically - all 4 injectors have done the same amount of work - so if one goes - its perfectly possible for others to go not long after.

If its the injectors again - id get a price off George for replacing them and see where you go from there*

Bear in mind the price you will get for your Passat now - on trade in - WILL reflect the fact your car has a fault now.

That should be factored into the decision process on whether its worth getting the injectors done - imo

*probably for the best to get injector 1 done too

Well I presume it's the injectors all I know it's now a problem with cylinder 3 and 4. I had a look at the computer when he had it plugged in and I seen something like "link broken" for cylinder 3, if that makes any sense to u? Either way it look expensive :-(

I'd still let George have a look at it first myself, get a quote for what's needed and then decide.

If the car is sound otherwise it may be better fixing it than taking a hit on trade-in anyway and ending up with who knows what in another car.

Well guys waiting on a few quotes for replacing the two injectors but rang my local VW dealer there today aswell he asked me for the chassis number and said there actually could recalls on the Passats related to the injectors but he's not 100% sure but he'll check and also see if there is any outstanding warranty work to be done on it. I said to him that I think the injector recalls is only related to the 2.0 tdi but he said he's not sure. So waiting to here back tomorrow. I could be lucky
