Wondering if am kidding myself here?

I live about 5 mins moderate cycle from work, 7 on a windy day.

I work from home one day a week and work in the office three days (long days).
    I come home for lunch.

So I'm getting about 20 mins exercise from it in total three days a week.

I have been a lazy slob for many years but am not very overweight, about 7kg over I would say. I just started doing it this week and am enjoying the exercise, short as it is.

If I went balls to the wall I suppose I could probably cut another minute off that each way.
I know i'm not going to get very fit doing this but should there be a least some slightly significant benefit?

why not just go for a longer cycle on the way home and get fitter that way?

That's a great idea thanks. I work shift though and finish usually when its late (around 23:30) Not a big fan of cycling in the dark , I have a fear of drunk drivers or other undesirables roaming the streets at that hour so am a little hesitant.
Though on the day shift rotations I will definitely go for a decent spin on the way home.

To be honest you could cycle for 2 hours a day but if you go home and eat rubbish for the night you will never be fit, do what your doing and start to gradually cut back on food and chances are you will want to start exercising more the fitter you get as you say you enjoy it

I have about a 15 minute cycle to work. Its not very much but it adds up. Cycled to work all winter and find that now im doing a bit of road biking I am finding it quite easy and enjoyable.

    Every little helps.

Of course there will be beneift, you will be out there, exercising your legs, getting some summer air, good cardio- you don't have to do 100 miles OP, like another poster said every little helps and you will slowly but surely build up those legs as opposed to sitting on your ass. Go for it!

Back in 2009 I bought a bike to cycle to work.
First spin, I did maybe 5-6km came back home tired as f**k. Gave up for good for 12 months.
After a year looking at my shiny never used bike I decided its time to put it in use. Started with 15 minutes cycles, then 20, 30. Started cycling to work at some point(around 20 km). More and more.
Finally last year I did An Post Meath Heritage Cycle last year. 160 km in 5h 35 min.
So I would say, start with 20 min, and once you will catch the bug, you'll cycle more.

And at the end, 20 min exercise is Always better than zero exercise.
