hub dynamo set up

So looking at hub dynamos and the like, and about to pull the trigger on the following bits n pieces:
BUSCH + MÜLLER Lumotec IQ Cyo Premium T senso plus front light. 80 lux, pictures show a nice even bright spread of light.
BUSCH + MÜLLER TOPLIGHT Line Brake Plus LED-Rear Light 50 mm. it has a brake light. Class.
SHIMANO Hub Dynamo DH3N80 32 h silver. Its shimano, so should be boringly reliable, built up on a mavic cxp22 rim with dt swiss champion spokes.

Any research I have found suggest that the B&M lights are good, and the shimano hub, whilst not as light (badum tish!) as other hubs, is very reliable.

All in, its coming in at about 220 delivered, then I would have to build up the wheel.

Are there any other combinations I should consider?

    Looks good.

I have a disc-compatible Shimano hub dynamo and use it with both rim brakes and disc brakes. It's been going for years without any servicing.

    http://www.rosebikes.com/article/road-front-wheel-28700-c-mavic-cxp-33dh-3n80/aid:716428

171 already built with tube, tyre and rim tape

The lights you mention can be got for 75 from the same site so 250 without the build hassle

72 for built front wheel, heavy and strong

If you go with dh-3n80 becareful servicing hub, very very easy to shear internal cable. I found a step by step guide online somewhere after the fact:)

@the bouldwhacker has the 90lux b+m version with the charger and it is a brilliant light. I have a 60 lux version and while happy with they are night and day in comparsion

the wheel is out of stock :(

I think the 90 lux version is double the price of the 80 lux version. Below is a picture of the light from the B&M I listed above. I think that should be more than adequate, and looks at least as good as what I am currently using. It has a nice long low beam, which I like.

60lux is fine, I've no doubt the 80lx is excellent.

Email rose about the wheel I linked, they will probably build it for you.

Where will you mount rear light, do you have a rack? I bought the Secula plus as you can't mount it on seat stays. Power hungry according to the audax crew on yacf

Will be riding with one of the Fleche team at weekend and will ask what set up he has

Slightly off topic but in terms of servicing hubs like this, can you buy spare parts for the hub. I damaged the connector part of my DH3N80 (through my own stupidity. The hub still works and produces electricity but the connections are now, well, risky, to say the least, wondering could I get replacements? (these are the dissasembled parts on page 2 and 3)

Rose(and maybe others) will get it for you, I emailed them part number and they got straight by to me.

They would want to be giving me commission at this stage.

My last was but this won't be. I may just try and see can I come up with my own solution when I get a chance. No rush though although the document you have their does not have a part number for what I need (the part directly under 2), as it appears to be part of the entire internal assembly.

i think you mean part three:

We do not stock this part, I can order it from Shimano for € 34.95.

    Thanks,

Its not all of part three I want though, part 3 is the expensive part, I quite literally want the connector which from the documents you linked to earlier comes off quite easily. I am pretty sure if I could get a part no. my LBS would order it in but I can't find a part no. for it anywhere unfortunately.

    Thanks for asking them though.

That said, if the entire thing is 35euro, I could just build up an entire dynamo for that if I cannot do a decent bodge job.

That rear light looks class if I ever run a permanent rear rack I might get one. I have a B&M secula mudguard mounted one. Look here for pricing might be cheaper free postage @ €500.

    http://www.starbike.com/en/accessories/lighting/

I got a Schmidt SON Edelux 2 light and dynohub from them were best prices when I bought. You can get the SON delux hub for €173. The shimano hub is good and you can get some very good prices for a built wheel on a lot of the german sites. I decided it was worth spending the bit extra on the SON hub though it's a nice bit lighter with slightly lower resistance and the 5 year warranty is reassuring. Mine on an open pro rim weighs only 20grams more than the stock wheel that came on my cannondale synapse. The wiring that comes with SON lights is much more heavy duty than the wiring with B&M. The hub comes with the rear light loom which it doesn't mention on the site so I now have a spare one!

The Lumotec IQ Cyo Premium 80lux looks good. The B&M Luxos and Luxos U both have 70lux but the Luxos U can be boosted to 90 for a few minutes at a time.
I was going to get the luxos u for the usb charger but decided to get the SON edelux 2 as it's a nice bit brighter which is more important than the 1% of the time I would use the usb charger.

    Some beam shot comparisons

    http://www.baslerbikes.de/index.php/baslerbikes-2-Scheinwerfervergleich-2013-november.html

You look at shutter precision hubs? They make supernova's hubs. Mechanic in LBS has one and is very pleased with it. Similar weight and performance to SON hubs.

Bought my Schmidt SON in March '11 and it needs replacement according to my LBS. Expected it to last longer. The light was as good as any I saw. The adapter to charge the iPhone and Garmin seemed poor quality; am on my second.

It's the hub gone? There is a five year warranty on them. You can also send them back for service. What make is the usb charger?

Thanks - I hadn't realised and have just mailed them.
I was using an E-Werk as an adapter and am on my second (maybe third). I don't think Garmin like when we charge from a dynamo.

The SON really should last longer, they generally service for free or quite cheaply for a long time after purchase. I see someone has said 5 years but I have heard of others in Audax circles sending them off for servicing and they renew the warranty, general rule of thumb is once they are serviced every 50000km they should last for as long as your knees but you do have to break the wheel down to do this so its not completely free.

I have 2 edelux lights that suffered from water engress. Both are with them now for servicing. Apparently it was an issue with the first batch released and should be sorted for shipping costs hopefully.

In terms of the drag, I had a set of Mavic Aksiums and a set of Shimano R500s on my bike. The drag of the 3N80 was less than the R500s and no different to the Mavics and possibly better when off. Only causes issue at really slow speeds. The benefit of the 3N80 over the Schmidt is that if nothing is draining the power (ie light is off) the magnets lock and there is no real drag at all, when in use, it is comparable to the SON apparently but I cannot find the numbers.

If you can up grade the light to the
    Luxos U
(if you will be doing any kind of long distance). It is much brighter, I used mine to guide other 4 cyclists through the final 50km of a wet and windy audax earlier this year and we kept good speed even through we were on bad back roads with plenty of pot holes etc. Great light and the USB charger works a treat.

ended up buying a (spur of the moment) schmidt Edelux from cramcycle, so I need to look again at the rear light as I don't think the one I linked to will work with the Edelux. Back to the drawing board! :) Luckily its still bright out.

Went looking for ways to mix and match to fix my broken dynamo hubs and came accross this on YACF:

    I think this is a good deal - http://www.rosebikes.com/article/atb-front-wheel-28700-c-dh-3n80---a-719/aid:484624

The hub on its own is 74 euro so you get a Mavic A719 build for just 18 more euro. The A719 seems to be a really well regarded touring rim.

    Mine arrived today :0

Or you can get a HN-3N30 instead of the 3N80 from here - http://www.bike24.de/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000,2,140,141;product=77559 . Less fancy rim too but it's only 58 euro. I was struggling to decide between the two.

I did a spin last night with a trip up to the Featherbeds in proper dark with my new Edelux II setup.

It was lovely except for the constant drizzle and wind! The cycling in the dark was nice and peaceful. The light worked really well out in the country-side but it isn't as good once you get near other light sources in town as those ruin your night sight and make the beam from the light seem much weaker. That means it's much the same as cycling with a basic light that's only for being seen, not seeing with.

I saw a doe jumping around having fun outside the tree-line on the way from Glencree to pine forest. Wouldn't usually see that sort of thing during daylight but I'm aware that there's probably a bigger risk of wild-life running out in front of me after dark.

My descent down Stocking Lane in the wet by dynamo light was only 50 seconds slower than my best time in the dry and broad daylight, which gives an idea of how effective the light was. I am a poor enough descender under any conditions though ;)

Your safer with a lower powered light dealing with deer. High powered lamps are used to dazzle and shoot them by a small element of deer hunters.

When on mtb at night during winter deer are very unpredictable especially if I have mtb light at full 1000 lumens. Deer are by far the biggest danger when on mtb at night. I never fail to not encounter them and have a few close calls.

A solo deer in late September especially was probably a young stag. Rut time so he may have been limbering up!

Dammit - I didn't know built-up dynamo wheels were a thing. I have a dynamo/LED setup on my Commuter only since march (details) and can't go back to battery torches on my 'Road' bike this winter, so ordered a Shutter Precision PV-8 for a new front wheel build. Ah well, if it ever gets nicked I can at least order one of these pre-made ones.

Anyway, got it fitted tonight. Im happy with the light from the edelux, brought it on a short dark dark road, and the beam seems so much better than the cree I was using. As for the wheel - it's a sturdy oul wheel, there is some resistence, but i was expecting that. All in all I am happy enough for now. Off to look for a rear light now.

How did that SP dynamo work out? Getting ready for the winter, I'm thinking getting a wheel built with one, as they reasonably priced, lightweight and small.

Sorry - didn't see the late reply (boards - why don't you flag replies like reddit does?).

The SP dynamo is still perfect - Strava tells me it has done 1200+km since installed, most of that as commuting through Dublin in the dry - but I haven't avoided rain and it has been soaked a few times. No complaints at all - it's so small it's not noticeable.

Great to hear, thanks. I went ahead and got one, too. Very happy with it, like you say, its so small you don't know it's there. Also upgraded to Supernova front+rear, just starting to be dark enough to be useful, but they seem pretty powerful. Rear fitted to seatpost, so totally illegal, hope I don't get a FPN.

I'm thinking of moving to a dynamo setup for my single speed commuter. Looking at the Rose site at prebuilt wheels. The hub seems to be 6 volt, 3w but I can't see on the pages for the lights what voltage and wattage the lights are. Anyone know if these lights will work with this hub or will they be only half lit from lack of power.

This is the wheel, although I'm going to email them to see if I can get it with a nut rather the QR

The SP dynamo is still perfect - Strava tells me it has done 1200+km since installed, most of that as commuting through Dublin in the dry - but I haven't avoided rain and it has been soaked a few times. No complaints at all - it's so small it's not noticeable.
I'm heading into my 3rd winter now on mine, no issues and use it on an all weather year round workhorse commuter. I had mine built onto an open pro 32 spoke.
