Cheap crap from supermarkets that are known to sell cheap products is not rocket science to work out that the savings are made by making something that won't last but will appeal to people who only buy a product based on price and nothing more. I also base it on what I have been told by people about the products over the years. I have mowers that cost 8 times the aldi one and power drills that cost 20 times what they charge there so why would I even care to go there?

No need to get rude though.

Its a Briggs & Stratton engine....I'd hardly call it a cheap crap engine!!

Try googling peoples views on them then. I don't rate b &s either.

Typical B&S mower engines are simple, robust, OHV designs that will run basically forever once the oil is changed every year. They are a textbook example of over-engineered, under-stressed pushrod American engines. There are of course those who prefer the somewhat quieter, more "sci-fi" OHC Honda designs.

As regards drills, I'm a Black-and-Decker man meself. Cheap in the good-value sense. ;)

Hmm, six years old, must change the oil….

Do indeed, it'll be like thin chicken-broth at this stage. It's a testament to the strength of those things that they usually survive that sort of abuse! :D

I do check it actually, and it's golden. But will change it, they are indestructible engines though!

Indeed they are, a mighty yoke.

I bought one of these on Thursday. I was halfway though the back garden and it started to make a rattling noise. Then the whole thing started shaking. Before I could turn it off there was a loud bang and the whole thing exploded and set fire to the cat who was asleep on the path beside the lawn. The cat ran off into the shed, knocking over the petrol can that I had just used and set my shed on fire. This spread to the tree and the fence and then into the neighbours garden. Why did I not listen to monkeynutz and spend many many hundreds on a superior mower? Why??

Actually, none of this really happened. I put it together on Saturday morning. Everything fitted together without incident and It's very solidly built. Once I stuck some oil and petrol into it, it started first time (super easy to start) and I took it around the garden without issue. It's a little heavier than my old one, but as it's self drive it's no big deal. The single height adjuster is spring loaded, so not difficult to use. it goes at a fairly brisk pace, and doesn't labour on long grass. Nice bit of kit.

Speaking of mower care, I sold my 15 year old B&S Castlegarden on Adverts for €70. It got an oil change every year and the odd spark plug. I rebuilt the carb a couple of years ago with a €6 diaphragm and used to sharpen the blade with an angle grinder. It started first time when I showed it to the buyer and he went off happy.

Yes, the carb diaphragm thing is a regular item every second year or so. They perish and crack over the Winter. I use a big-ish flat file on the blades, as well as hedge-clippers and whatnot.

My sister bought a stereo from Lidl. A year later it stopped working so she rang them and asked was the warrantee still valid. They said "its out by a few weeks but dont worry about that, whats your address".

They sent a courier to collect the stereo and a week later returned it by courier repaired.

Is it a steel frame chasis ?

Yep, but it's a decent thickness. I'm picking up a tin of Waxoyl in Halfords later to prevent rot.

Thanks ,sounds like a good buy, need something for a 1000 sq metre lawn ,the old Mitsubishi machine I have is ~25 years old and becoming temperamental .
Its built like a bloody tank and the self drive is gone so cutting the lawn is a good workout.

I got a self drive in Woodies for 219 at the weekend, after my 8 year old mower died.
This is the model here -

    http://www.woodiesdiy.com/Product/prolawn-46cm-140cc-self-propelled-petrol-lawnmower/22947/4.30#.U43HLxqkrpE

140cc engine, a little bigger than the entry level for petrol mowers. Used it for the first time on Sunday, seems well made and controllable - throttle handle helps you control the speed, and 7 length settings...

I’d be looking for something a bit bigger for a 1000 sq metres. My lawn is about a third of that size and I usually have to empty the box 4 or 5 times.

The Woodies one looks like a good buy – the variable speed drive is not on the Aldi one, but the warranty may not be as good.

Yeah, a friend of mine uses a decent size ride-on for a similar sized area. Lucky bassid, it's like a tractor and forage harvester, only smaller. Want! :D

I bought a self-propelled lawn mower and think it's great.
I was wondering was it a novelty, thought there's not that much effort to pushing a lawn mower but I wouldn't swap back. highly recommended.

Having a ride-on is not all its cracked up to be! There's the effort of moving the steering wheel and the brake and lets not forget having to drive to the compost heap to empty. All work you know!

Yeah perhaps I need a more powerful machine.
It takes me a good hour and three quarters to cut my lawn with the current machine ,I probably empty the bag 12 times .

A large walk behind mower is probably worth it's weight in gold to you. The larger the blade, the smaller the number of passes you need to do. It might cost you a fair bit more than €230 though!

Got one of these last year, lasted 3 cuts and then completly stopped working. Was the engine brand that made me go for it but didn't get another one.
Infairness they took it back no problem at all so that should anyone comfort that buys one
