Will there be any exit polls for this area?

As opposed to a lot of noise from Ming.

Hopefully he will be Brussels's problem soon!

Some opinion polls say Carthy will top the poll, cant see this, no way sinn fein will get large votes in kildare and other eastern parts.
Reckon Mcguinness will top the poll with Ming second and Carthy third.

    Gave Harkin the #1.

He got a 1 from our house, ming got 2.

Looks like Ming might run away with it. Just heard Lorraine Higgins got 4%, so much for all her hot air.

Newstalks panel interpretation of exit polls, seats for Ming, Mcguinness, One FF, Harkin. Reasoning was FF vote between two candidates around 21% but understated because people didn't want to say they were voting FF. SF transfer unfriendly. Harkin very transfer friendly.

Ming topping the poll and Rónán on 3%, oh Happy Days!

Carthy nowhere near the percentages that were being talked about during the week

Gave #1 to Higgins, #2 to Deary. Really struggled after that. Very poor calibre of candidates in the MNW.

The exit poll that was taken had only a sample size of 1,000, huge margin for error on that.
Between first and second is only 40 votes, hardly scientific.
Mcguinness will top the poll with Ming in second and Carthy in third.

It's a huge constituency, very difficult to make predictions beyond the most obvious. Ming should win a seat, though.

Across the board, I think SF have probably done worse than might have been thought, while FF have done better.

Exactly, i would like to know where they took the exit poll, was it split evenly around or just a few counties.
It will really be a tale of two constituency's, the east and west, Ming will do well in the west and Mcguinness will do well in the east.

Voted Ming for my first choice, can't remember who my second was, Lorraine Higgins was about 6th

Ronan Mullen, Harkin and Ben Gilroy are anti-abortion so they got nothing from me. I didn't vote for any of the ones affiliated with the Christian parties nor for the lady at the bottom of the voting paper with the Irish name and Irish sounding party, I had no idea of who her or her party was

Right ive been adding up all my numbers, taking into account turnout of 55% and
valid election registar based on last election and i have Mcguinness to top the poll and Ming to come secound.
Its very close ive made it around 300-500 votes between the two to top the poll.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 12,333 ✭✭✭✭JONJO THE MISER

Any tallies or idea how the vote is going?

Report on Newstalk that Carthy is performing well below expectations and may struggle to take a seat. Not sure how well-founded this is though...

Mayo news reporting Flanagan ahead with Carthy 2nd, and Mcguinness 3rd, Harkin in with a shout for 4th. But no first count expected until this time tomorrow.

    It's very tricky so far:

Louth latest Euro tallies show Carthy on 32%, McGuinness 20% Byrne 13% Dearey 9% Ming Flanagan 8%

Leitrim tally figures for European election: M Harkin 4,776; L Ming Flanagan 3,510; M Carthy 2,888; McGuinness 1,251; Cope Gallagher 1,059

Europe, Longford final tally Luke 'Ming' Flanagan (Ind) 30pc Mairead McGuinness (FG) 18 Matt Carthy (SF) 12 Marian Harkin (Ind) 11

    Castlebar #ep14 tally - 17% complete - J Higgins 29.4, Ming 21.6%, Harkin 13.4%, Carthy 9.3%, McGuinness 8%, the Cope 7%

Tally figures in #Cavan - sitting MEP Jim Higgins seems to be in bother as Matt Carthy (SF) in the lead fllwed by Mairead McGuinness #ee14

Really hard to say - Carthy no longer appears the shoo-in he was supposed to be, perhaps?

    Scofflaw

Do you know if there is tallys for other counties?
RTE coverage for the euro count is non existent, they were talking to a reporter in Castlebar and did not even ask him how the euro count was going:confused:

I gave Harkin the number one yesterday not knowing she was anti abortion. I wish there was a website that had all candidates opinions on topics like abortion, same sex marriage etc. My own fault I suppose for not researching properly

Your 100% correct, it really tells you the state of Journalism when you have a paper like the Independent saying this morning Ming is elected as he has topped the poll, no he has not as the count is still under way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 393 ✭✭Goldenjohn

Excuse my ignorance if ming wins a seat what happens his seat in the dail?
Does he double job so to speak or does he have to give up his dail seat, thereby setting up a bye election?

    First count results are in

    Luke 'Ming' FLANAGAN - 124,063

    Matt CARTHY - 114,727

    Mairead McGUINNESS - 92,080

    Marian HARKIN - 68,986

Nobody has reached the quota yet so it could still go any number of ways

Should be Ming, Carthy, McGuinness, Pat the Cope/Harkin in that order.

Carthy won't be transfer-friendly but appears to have too much of a lead.

McGuinness will get two-thirds of Higgins transfers plus bits from everywhere.

Question is whether FF transfers will be tight enough to keep Gallagher ahead of Harkin. What might count against her is that Ming still needs 5,200 votes to put him over a quota and those votes might otherwise have gone to her.

I heard his co opted candidate is the whistle blower John Wilson. Wouldn't surprise me if he goes to Europe and Ming stays at home.

Flanagan has been elected. He met the quota after the first round of transfers.

Carthy still in 2nd place, followed by McGuinness, Harkin & Gallagher.

I am Fine Gael through and through, but I really wish people would stop downplaying Sinn Féin or using the IRA card in the hope that it will damage their vote. It seems every time this happens, it only gives them a bump. If people dislike them, they should starve them the oxygen of publicity.

That was the pattern across the locals as well. At the stage where most councils had only returned first counts, they had 80 seats while the other parties still had only 5 or 10 - at this stage they have 157, so half were first count seats.

I tend to think it is more impressive getting a high first preference count and enough transfers to take you over the line rather than low first preference and needing the majority of transfers to get you over the line. Different story if you do not get enough transfers though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,611 ✭✭✭✭josip

I can't see Pat the Cope getting enough transfers from Byrne to go ahead of Harkin.
Even if he picked up 35,000 transfers, she would undoubtedly get a few thousand and probably enough to keep her nose in front

I agree on the poor calibre of candidates. I only gave my preferences to 3 candidates:
    1. A reluctant #1 to Lorraine Higgins, just because of who Labour are aligned with the EU Parliament (the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats).
    2. A #2 as a sort of protest vote to Deary.
    3. Carthy got #3 as he signed up to the digital rights charter on wepromise.eu.

    As for the rest...

I lost interest in Marian Harkin when I heard she was anti-fluoride, so I figured she might be into pseudoscientific bollocks...and then I heard she didn't think suicidal ideation was a "legitimate" reason to have an abortion in this country.

I couldn't be bothered with the FFers, any self-respecting omniscient god would know how hard they've ****ed this country.

DDI are too nonsensical to vote for. I could have walked into the polling station absolutely wasted and I wouldn't have given them a preference.

    Fís Who-a?

I decided long ago against voting for Fine Gael in the European Elections. Their voting bloc, the European People's Party, supported ACTA, a treaty which would have mutilated the Internet as we know it, a treaty only some fatcat wanker would support.

If offered the choice between Ronan Mullen and Marie Le Pen, I'd spoil my ballot and flee. Unlike Ronan, I see women as more than incubators, and I see the Catholic Church as far, far less than my masters.
