Supplement for my workout

    Hey,
I joined a gym about 2 weeks ago with the aim of toning up putting on a little muscle (5'9 tall guy, 12.5 stone). As part of my membership, one of the trainers created a 3-day full body workout plan and I've been trying to stick to it as best I can. I've never done any weight training before this, and as you can imagine, its tough! I've been told I need to really increase my protein intake and while I've been eating a bit more chicken, milk, etc. I really think I need a form of good protein shake/mix to help. Any advice/suggestions from people in the know here? Cheers!

Go into any supplement store & ask for advice. Most of the guys in these shops will steer you right. I personally use Gold standard whey protein. Be prepared to pay for it though as these products tend to not be too cheap.

Myprotein, the protein works, bulkpowders....they'll all be able to sell you similar to Optimum Nutrition whey but without the ON premium.

Apparently tubs of gold standard whey are on sale for €45 in the fresh supermarket beside the Grand Canal Theatre near Ringsend. I find that hard to believe considering how much it's on sale for elsewhere. If it's true then happy days!

It's still a lot more than you'd pay for the equivalent to ON online.

Would be interesting to see what size tubs they are?

I would bet thousands that they are 900g tubs.

Optimum Nutrition is a good quality product with a ridiculous price!

    Those tubs are €45.99 online.

I would be surprised if Fresh were stocking whey and even more surprised if they charged less than anywhere else for a 900g tub.

Yup go online. There is a lot of competition online for new customers and they all offer great deals.

I don't know what size they are to be honest. I'll be down that neck of the woods later in the week so I'll definitely have a look & post back here.

Bought 2.5 kg of whey on bulk powders yesterday....€31.99!!

Ok, was in Fresh yesterday & they are selling 900g tubs of gold standard whey for €36.99. Saw it with my own eyes. 😲 also, Holland & Barrett are selling the same product for €54.99 as part of their 'one cent' promotion i.e. Pay full price for one tub & get a 2nd for one cent.

Yeah, it's €37 for a 0.9kg tub. Still poor value compared to buying online. Same applies to the H&B deal.

Sorry to hijack your thread OP but this question is related.

Does anyone have experience of making their own 'bulking shakes' (whey protein, oats, peanut butter, milk, etc.) and did it work out cheaper doing that than buying the mass gainer product online (ON or similar) ?

Whey protein itself can be got for cheap and I'd prefer making my own but are there extras in the mass gainer that would be beneficial that I would be missing out on (BCAA's , creatine, etc.)?

So at the end of the day (price/taste-wise) which works out best?

Nah, you can make your own far cheaper. The bought ones tend to be expensive oats and sugars. You'll get BCAAs from the whey anyway and you can buy creatine cheaply if you want to stick that in.

    1/2 scoops of whey
    scoop of oats
    1/2 spoons of peanut butter
    1 Banana
    Milk

Blend it all = 1-1.5k calories easy.

I'd say it'd be about 1/3 of the cost.
If you prefer creatine in it, put it in. Very cheap and effective.
