How is this lad employed as a commentator? Regularly gets stuff wrong, player names, clear reasons for reffing decisions.

subjectively he just gets on my nerves with what appears to be contrived speach patterns.

    BTW Anglo Celt Cup

is it Kelt of Selt? I would have thought the former but I'm not 100%

Whatever about Ger his co commentator has just described the game as "pedantic".

I'm fairly sure that makes no sense.

Who is Canning related to in RTE?

He's the best commentator in GAA still going. That says a lot but Marty is brutal and Carty emits a sound only dolphins can pick up.

By far the best, and he at least sounds passionate about the games he is commentating on.

Have you anyone in particular in mind? I hear matches on LMFM (Louth Meath) and Shannonside / Northern Sound and nobody stands out.

Anyway the best commentator of all time never even made it on to the radio. Eddie Moroney.

Canning is obsessed with the Black Card.

If I lnocked back a shot something everytime he mentioned it, I'd be in a coma by now.

Mind you, this game (Tyrone v Down) is having that effect on me anyway, without the shots.

To be fair to Ger Canning, who I think IS a very good commentator, the reason he was mentioning the black card so much is cos i) it's the first time it's gonna ruin be used in the championship and ii) there have been a number of incidents in this particular game where the issuing/non-issuing of the black card has been seriously controversial..

I've always thought that there should be a "penalty goal", similar to penalty try in rugby, for incidents like the two penalty incidents today.. If a guy is clear through and gets taken out, you dont punish the offending team by giving their player a black card (particularly towards the end of the match), but if they know that the goal will be given anyway then they wont bother making the foul..

I came across this fake Twitter account recently. Very funny stuff.

Daragh Moloney is hands down the best commentator out there. Dave McIntyre on Newstalk/Setanta is good too. Canning and MM are a bloody joke.

Contrived is the word - the man has no feel for the games he's commentating on - its especially noticeable when he's on a hurling match - no sense of why things are happening or what the player is trying to do or even the rules at times. Drives me mad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

His complete lack of passion and interest in the game is bad enough, but after all these years not knowing the very basic rules of the game is just downright unprofessional and I cannot understand how he continues to be employed on that point alone.

As for his contrived 'awfully awfully' accent, just don't get me started.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭Hotale.com

What I can't stand about the RTE commentators is that they contradict themselves all the time.

I don't know who was commentating on today's game, but he said Benny Coulter was playing terribly about 5 minutes before Down came back into the game, but once they were back into it he was applauding his character and the influence he had on the game. Really, really annoyed me.

I'm quite impressed by Tomás O'Sé in the studio though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

BBC's commentator had a bit of a mare today too making numerous mistakes but at least he talks in a normal manner. It is incredible how posh/contrived Canning's voice has become over the years. Back in the 90's he was bearable. It will be interesting to see who Sky employ.

Some credit to RTE for bring in Tomás O'Sé but for the big games he will be replaced by Spillane.

Im fairly sure he meant pedestrian. Id have far more problem listening to Tommy Carrs whinging drone than Ger. Cannings ok,not as good as Maloney but far,far better than Marty or the fella on BBC today with McHugh.

Why can't they get some decent commentators? Donal Óg would be fantastic commentating on a hurling game I'd say.

RTÉ seriously need an overhaul of their media team, Brolly's the only one worth listening to out of the football pundits in my opinion (Ó Sé seemed good today as well though). Can't stand the hurling pundits. Loughnane and Farrell are shocking, Marty doesn't have a clue.

He's very slick sounding and professional however he never calls out any of the panelists on the bullsh1te they continually speak and he allows these little bitching sessions between Spillane and Brolly to go on when really he should nip them in the bud fairly quickly.

I actually find the bitching entertaining, although I agree it should really be stopped. Looks so amateur.

Duignan always seems very biased too me. Cyril Farrell is just really poor; Lot's of emotion but not much analysis. Loughnane is good occasionally but he gets far too biased a lot of the time. I like Eddie Brennan and Liam Sheedy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

Well, as much as we give out about them, the Brolly/Spillane bitch sessions are ratings gold. They are the GAA version of Dunphy & Giles. Given the complete lack of imagination in Montrose, there is no way that they are going to change a winning formula.

I though Tomas did great. But the usual Troika of Stupidity will all be back together for all the big games. They'll probably only bring on Tomas when one of the lads needs a day off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,619 ✭✭✭harpsman

I see Sunday Game gave McKernan motm-personally I thought he had a poor enough game by his own high standards.
They didnt even mention Conor Lafferty who I thought was motm mself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 487 ✭✭drogdub

RTE seem to have decided that the formats for GAA and Rugby will be the same. For live matches have two wafflers for those who want to be entertained and one analyst to mainly tell them where they are wrong. Then an evening show of proper analysis with two analysts and maybe one waffler.

The lads on the Sunday Game tonight showing their laziness again calling:

    Senan Kilbride, Senan McBride
    Westmeath, Meath
    Dennis Glennon, Dennis Lennon

When he's not on the kilkenny "love boat" he's just about bearable! For me Darragh Maloney is top class, really brilliant at what he does. Eddie Brennan and Donal og are streets ahead of anyone else they have on as analysts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭seligehgit

Eddie Brennan is probably the best of the hurling analysts,Ciaran Whelan impresses in the football,Kevin McStay calls it as it is most of the time.
Tomas o Se has impressed on Seo Spoirt on TG4 for some time and is likely to be a very good addition to the Sunday Game.
Many of the analysts on TG4 are superior to those on RTE.

I thought I heard that one but dismissed it as me not hearing it properly. Jesus no one in Meath wants to be associated with that performance on Saturday :P

Good voice but he doesn't but in the required effort.

Ger seemed flabbergasted yesterday when for a forty-five, the Tyrone goalie advanced from his goal and lined up to take it. It was moved in 10 yards due to the encroachment of a Down player. Sean Cavanagh then took the free from his hands.
Ger couldn't understand why the goalie didn't take the free after it was brought forward. Baffles me how a guy watching football as long as he has couldn't grasp that teams may have a long range free taker, or a "from the ground" specialist and also a short range from the hand free-taker.

I was watching the programme when Brennan and Cummins were previewing the 2014 Championship, and thought both were awful.

They basically just named out who they expected might win the individual games "you'd kinda expect Tipp to have too much here" and "Cork might win that one" seemed to be the basis for their predictions, with little or no actual analysis at all.

I like the way ger canning drops in elements of greek philosophy into gaa commentary, other sports commentators suffer with their lack of greek references

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,174 ✭✭✭hardybuck

Ger used to have a habit of saying 'woof' whenever there was a shot on goal, big collision etc. Someone must have said it to him, as he's toned it down a bit in recent years.

    What I've often wondered is:

    1. What lads like Ger do during the week, and in winter when there are no games on?

    2. Where the hell he got his accent from!? He's from Cork as far as I know.

I also really don't like when lads, Marty Morrissey in particular, refer to players by their first name or their nick name as if they were great buddies or something.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,722 ✭✭✭nice_guy80

time to ship most of these lads out

there has to be capable talent in the RTE sports department or on local radio.
they'd do the job better for a lot less money, and would have a better knowledge of GAA names, history, gameplay

Marty Morrisey is the same. Offers nothing. Can't read the game at all.

WHAT A GOAL or WHAT A SAVE is used to describe every single save or goal.

Stats flash up on screen and his response is genuine surprise.

"And look at that...Tyrone have mode over 200 fist passes......."

Never critical of any players / mangers or officials.

Neither of them are ever around at the business end of the championship in fairness.

    Easy mistake to make.

The thing I don't get is that I have heard for years now that someone like Darragh Maloney should get an AIF but it seems RTE are too afraid to rock the boat and give the biggest games of the year to the best commentator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Ger Canning has a personal hatred for the Leinster Hurling Championship and should never be allowed to commentate a match in that competition.
