Serious implications for the country with this one.

Personally I think all public service unions should be smashed. This is another group that will just hold the country to ransom.

Gardai are more than entitled to form a trade union, it will also allow them to become a police force of the people & not the enforcers of the current ruling party

Yeah, representation sucks. We should ban all group gatherings too. And books, burn the lot of them!

I've a funny feeling a lot of the rights you have as a worker that you take for granted came from others who had to form a union to get them and had to listen to people like you along the way!

If this means the force is more transparent and open to scrutiny then good for them.

They should just get on with the job and shut up right? **** em they don't need representation right?

If it means the government can't impose their rulings on them with out consulting With them first then proper order. They are only getting what every other working person already has. About time.

Whatever about them forming a union of some sort, surely there's some serious issues with them being allowed to strike?

    Hahahahaha!

Also when can we get rid of that pesky right to free speech?

On a serious note, this is great news for the Gardai and for the average worker. However, why are The Journal only reporting it today? I thought the ECJ ruled earlier in the week that the Gardai were entitled to join in pay talks etc...

The army will be next..."hey soldier, hop up there and defend your country" " eh don't think so bud, union steward says it's after 6, double time?"...

Pay him a decent wage and that problem won't arise, simple

    "Decent" is highly subjective.

    That will never happen.

They will be able to lobby against proposed laws and be in a stronger position to do so. That can't be good. Also erroneous compensation claims will increase.

    Great.

Recruits start off at less than minimum wage. There's a reason Irish soldiers do UN tours in the Leb & Kosovo & its not for the local cuisine

The amount of times this nonsensical, rhetorical sentence has been stated on Boards over the last few years is mind blowing. Yet, nobody ever says what they actually mean.

WTF does "smash" the unions mean?

Or are you just another parroter of repetative nonsense as well?

So you think that the Guards should not have representation?

I love how the same people who are constantly saying the populace should take to the streets over every tiny tax increase or minor cut in services are the same people who think that the public sector shouldn't have any representation and should basically shut up and take whatever **** comes their way.

Great to see the GRA and AGSI getting teeth and being in a position to fight back against the Govt cuts and agendas. What they need now is a Brendan Ogle type leader.

They already strike, they just don't officially call it a strike.

No pension worth mentioning unless they are officers and high rank.

Or maybe they could outline what the wages are before the guy applies for the job................
Recruits start off at less than minimum wage.

So do lots of other jobs. First year rates for trades all hover either side of €200 a week.

Some people seem to think if you're a public servant you should become some sort of slave to the people. You're owned by the public

    Irrelevant

How. 2 jobs, both with training periods involving low pay.

New recruits are not unique when it comes to starting on little money. Other jobs even involve periods of no pay at all while interning.

Why because it counters the "woe is me, im a poor put upon recruit" sympathy argument?

Its a job. A job with advertised pay rates. Nobody is going in blind.

Are they lured in with lies about how much they will be paid each week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,264 ✭✭✭fran17

i say that if there is any way that people can come together to form a grouping or alliance that will strengthen there hand in opposing and fighting governments then do it.including the garda

I never hear any bitching from the cops in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Is Ireland the first country in the world were the cops have a union????

This is going to be a disaster in the future if the Gardai go on strike the scumbags will have a free for all.

It's all well and good till the unions have them hyped up about deserving big pay rises and voting on strike action leaving the country lawless for days/weeks.

You only have to look at the way they are going on in other industries trying to push wages up. Unsustainable wages for 6 months then years of unemployment leaves you in a much worse situation. Unions in most industries had their day, when people were being properly oppressed . At this stage they are lining their own pockets. Head up to the top floors of Liberty Hall and have a look at how the poor men of the people struggle to get by while representing their fellow little man.

yes ,a self proclaimed socilist who insists on each ESB worker he represents earning an average of 75 k per year or double the industrial wage

    But what about the carpenters?

Are you giving up on the plight of the new recruits and moving on now?

Well then everyone has been lied to because wages are down all over the place. Such is life during recessions. Governments and companies cant afford to pay the same as when there was a lot more money coming in. Pay cuts and/or redundancies follow.
