Horizon Wi-Free

    Just got a letter from UPC saying that I can now use free Wi-Fi from other (participating) UPC subscriber modems when away from my house.

    The SSID will be 'Horizon Wi-Free' and you have to set a special password for the service on http://www.upc.ie/myupc under My Products/Broadband/Horizon Wi-Free. Note that the password must include at least one special (non-alphanumeric) character and be at least 8 characters long.

    Its a pretty good service, I have it on setup to auto connect on my Kindle fire and its been great so far.

    I and three of my neighbours have UPCxxxxx SSIDs but there isn't any 'Horizon Wi-Free' SSID on the ether anywhere local???

    according to the UPC site its still being rolled out to different areas.

    Look at my first post, they wrote me a letter saying it was now active on my box.

    I dont have wifree on my own Horizon box either but have signed up and use it when out and about.

    Take note that you cannot connect to your own box's Wi-Free with your userid and password so when it's activated on your horizon box, you will need to get a friend who has opted in and is a Horizon subscriber to check it with their userid and password.

    I didn't think you were allowed get a password for Wi-Free until it was activated on your own box?? I opted in a while back but wasn't aware it needed a new password until they sent me the letter.

    Anyway, I'm off now to buy some fruit & veg. and I'll electronically stalk my neighbours to see if I can pick up a signal between here and the greengrocers!
