    Hello,

I recently moved into an apartment block,I was planning on getting UPC installed in my apartment. I was setting up my TV and DVD player when I noticed a cable sticking out of the wall. I had a newish TV that is freeview enabled and when I plugged this cable in and tuned the TV I got 12 channels, all the irish channels, BBC1 &2, ITV Channel 4 Sky 1,Sky news and Setanta. The apartment block is new and with only two other tenants on the ground floor ( we are on the third floor).

Does anyone have an explanation for how I got these channels and if it is legal or not?

    Thanks

Nothing illegal. You must be getting a signal from ariel on
the roof all the channels you have are free to air channels.

Maybe not setanta only saw that after i posted reply.

Most likely the UPC analogue cable channels - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=88414136#post88414136

Has to be the UPC analog signal, you can't get Sky from an aerial.

Thats all the channels, a bit cheeky but im going to rescan it later to see if I get the rest. Thanks for your help, the girlfriend was worried we were doing something illegal!

If UPC provide individual subscriptions rather than some something included in the service charges then you are indeed doing something illegal, not uncommon, but illegal none the less.

UPC no longer offer an analogue-only TV subscription package, the channels are there for the 47,000 or so legacy analogue-only TV subscribers so enjoy them while they're still available

Continue as you are, you won't have UPC knocking on your door. Maybe at some point they may disconnect the feed to the apartment if you/landlord are not a subscriber.

How would washing powder on the roof do that? Even an aerial won't get Sky 1, Sky news and Setanta.

As others have said most likely UPC analogue.
