Only the Irish channels look like they still have Teletext

If you are using an old SKY box for free to air then you can set reminders on the EPG of when to switch over, series link is handy. Note - the i button only works in TV Guide for the encrypted channels.

You can get a card to decode some of the Setanta programs. You need a sky box to activate it. It requires a power down to swap over the card each time you use it. (or you can add ITV/C4/C5 manually to other channels) An activated card will also work in some non-Sky boxes, but you'll loose the EPG.

Thread has nothing whatsoever to do with Sky or Sky boxes.

The picture quality of the Analogue channels leaves a lot to be desired. And who knows if they are going to pull the plug at some stage in the future ?

Getting saorview receiver and free to air satellite will complement these channels. If the FTA box is a SKY box then you can use the EPG to remind you when to switch over to the analogue channels. - You can also daisy chain a saorview box off the sky box so anything set on it's timer takes over.

It's good to know the options. It's good to be able to see some of those channels in HD.
It's nice to know that if UPC pull the plug then much of what I think is worth watching on those channels can been accessed on other FTA satellite channels if you don't mind waiting for the latest series.

I'm not a mod but at least admit you're going completely off topic and that discussing the merits of Free to Air satellite is for a different forum, let alone thread.

Okay there's a lot of off topic discussion and some back-seat modding to boot on this thread. Lets get back on topic please.

For most parts of Dublin just hook up the TV and tune away with the analog tuner.

Like I said earlier most are available on saorview ( Tesco might still have some TV Star boxes for a tenner) or FTA satellite. And you can stream Channel 4 too on BB

They are still there but don't expect them to be there forever though as they are likely to be phased out eventually.

Saorview from Kippure is on channel 54,58
But Three Rock is on 30,33 - so might possibly interfere with Channel 4 / Discovery if you have a long cable run or try to connect both aerials at the same time .

Hi I am in naas and after a an analogue tune I have 16 channels discovery is not one of them I am having trouble manually tuning any advice in terms of band and tv system it's given me options for different bands and tv systems

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,516 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

PAL-I always and VHF usually. But analogue line up differed from area to area and ex-Chorus areas would have a different line up to ex-NTL areas.

I bought a new 32" tv for my father.. to watch the world cup in his bedroom (replacing his old banger of a telly. Signal is analogue. All 16 stations tuned in ok but ... rte2 has NO SOUND. Any ideas? Do I need a signal booster?

Try Manually tuning in RTE 2 - use to have this problem when auto tuned.

I tried the manual tuning and fine tuning options but no luck.

if all else fails the get a saorview box, mainly for the HD picture.

try tuning RTE2 in on a different channel, some TV's allow you to adjust the sound level per channel

or try tuning in with a video recorder

or tell your Dad to watch the World Cup matches on BBC and UTV

  • Registered Users Posts: 215 ✭✭Mike1961

Thanks for all the comments (even the 'watch BBC' one :D).

It was my fault - I had three options when scanning in the channels (DK, BG, I). I hadn't a clue, left it as the default (DK) and scanned away - getting all the channels and just RTE2 having no sound.

On googling it I found that I should have scanned using the 'I' setting (appropriate for western Europe apparently), did a manual channel scan using the RTE2 frequency and the 'I' option and hey presto... picture and sound.

  • Registered Users Posts: 215 ✭✭Mike1961

And now for my next question ...

The parents have a digital UPC box downstairs but they only have a connection point upstairs (no box) .. the cable from the upstairs connection point runs directly into the back of the TV and so appears the 16 analog channels with a fairly poor picture (when compared to the digital picture).

Could I purchase a digital box and run the cable thru the digibox to the TV .. and get the digital picture? Would I get the same 16 channels or ??

That did occur to me but unusual that it only affected 1 channel after a full scan so that's why I ruled it out. In analogue terrestrial days this would happen with Walker/Silvercrest (Lidl) family of TVs even though Ireland was selected during setup - PAL I (Ireland/UK/Hong Kong/South Africa/Macau).

The digital channels on UPC are encrypted and only available with a UPC supplied box and multiroom sub.

Well for most of mainland western Europe it would be BG (except France who have had a very different analogue TV system compared to the minor difference between PAL-I and PAL-BG)

The Cush lists the correct countries for PAL-I

mind boggling that this problem happened after country Ireland had been selected on the TV, its a very basic thing that the designers should have got right

Thanks for advice re lack of sound on Network 2which I sorted after reading this thread. It worked by trying manual scan and putting in I setting. However, I started messing with the tuning again in order to try an eliminate slight "hiccup" when clicking between rte 1 and 2. Now, I have lost all the radio channels which I had before. Am totally confused now. I think I tuned in using digital/analogue. I have stations on 1 to 17. Before my "messing" I was able to get the radio stations when I clicked the button to go lower than 1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
