C64 Love Thread

Do the mods mind if i update this thread? Plan to do it more regularly.

Just discovered something awesome to do with the c64.

Developers are actively converting disk images games to the Easy Flash cartridge format.

Meaning you can now get .CRT files for games that didn't come originally out on a cartridge.

This means you can get instant loading in an Emulator, or on real c64 with the 1541 Ultimate Cartridge! :)

Just go to the csdb site and search for "easy flash".

The Last Ninja 1 + 2 are combined on one cartridge file, and there's another one for The Last Ninja 3!

Everyone should go and load up The Last Ninja 3 and watch the best intro to a c64 game ever! :)

A few games that stick out in my mind from having my C64 (my first computer):

    Spikey In Transylvania
    Flimbos Quest
    Blues Brothers
    Street Fighter 2 (poor port)
    Ghostbusters (was awesome)
    Dizzy series
    Rampage
    Renegades
    Batman

I've got most of them CIB here too.

As if it needs to be said but,
No linking to copyright covered files.
And that includes games running in emulation remotely and streamed to your pc or games running in a Java/Flash app in your browser and all manner in between.
I know that an awful lot of C64 titles are abandonware now and in the public domain just be careful is all.
    Thanks

Would have loved to see this compilation released as a cartridge. Hours spent on Gryzor...

I was tempted but a bit pricey no? Would also help if he took a picture of it displaying something.

I spent €100 on my one :o - although it was boxed and barely used. I'd say he's open to haggling.

Yeah a photo of it powered on would definitely help. I guess he has so much stuff for sale he probably got lazy :D

Edit - by the way, some of those monitors have a scart input, some don't. Best to check first, otherwise you'll be left in a situation like me where you've to hold The Last Bandit ransom until he gets one of his fancy cables working :D

Yeah I was wondering what sort of connections it might have at the back - I cba having to buy a new cable and 80 too much for me. Probably just stick with my current 21" Trini and RGB scart.

I recently spent €70 just on parts just to repair my 1084S, so €80 may not be bad price after all.

How does it compare to a PVM?
A PVM with the c64 hooked upto it for a fair comparison that is.

As for the prices, its a good tactical move to list your ads for a bit higher than you are willing to sell, as someone might pay over that amount!

They're totally different and to understand you've to know a little bit about the different type of CRT.

Trinitron isn't just a name, it's actually a Sony technology. It basically produces that lovely scanline by scanline image you see on Sony home TVs, PVMs, BVMs, etc. Sony owned the patent up until the last few years of CRT production I believe.

Other CRT monitors (my 1084S and both my cabs) have a different type called a 'shadow mask'.

Shadow masks give you more of a dot based picture. You still see scanlines, but if you look really really closely you can see their makeup is different.

These aren't as scanline heavy and give a bit more of a natural blending look to everything.

So yeah, the PVM produces a Trinitron image and the 1084s a shadow mask image.

Both are gorgeous in their own way if you get a high end picture :)

Still one of my fav games of all time, could nearly complete it blindfolded:

Some amazing graphics for the time, especially when all Id ever played previously was a 2600.

#C64 games you saw advertised in mags back in the day that you always wanted to play and even to this day you've never played:

    Night Shift

    :(

Still have my old 64 tucked away in the wardrobe. I really wish I'd made a bit more use out of it than as a glorified games console though. Oh, well.:o

Aww, I miss my CPC 464, some great times were had on that. Can't remember many of the games I played, but I remember stuff like Winter Sports?

EasyFlash is awesome, but there isn't really much advantage to using .CRT files in an emulator. You can go to 5000% speed or use other settings to get almost instantaneous loads of .D64 and .T64 anyway.

You still have to press the fast forward button and wait though! :p

And you'll end up skipping some of the intro music!

Ah, sweet, sweet nostalgia! Still have my C64 + 1541 disk drive and about 500+ games; sadly it's in the folks attic in another country :(

I console myself by wearing this tshirt (in blue, just like the original loading screen, not the black version you see here)

And for those of you who want disk-drive loading nostalgia: Load "*", 8,1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,301 ✭✭✭Doge

Need to get c64 tee at some point myself.

I don't think the original logo looks good on a tee, I'd like to see it pimped a bit with a 3D logo that looks futuristic or something!

Get the C64 shipped over asap! :D

Remember the brilliant demo casettes you used to get on the cover of magazines back in the day, surprising amount of content on each of them, software on one side and games on the other. Cant remember any names now though?

Went down to Waterford to visit family for a Summer holiday once and my cousin had a couple of shoeboxes full of them in his room, asked him if I could read the magazines aswell and he said he didnt bother with the magazines, just went into the newsagents and pocketed the free stuff on the front, scumbag.

So true, only the true nerds who used the c64 more than a mere gaming device had them!

My family and I never even knew a disk drive existed for the system,
I only discovered they could take cartridges when I was in a friends house when I was 7, who had one.

I'd say 90% of the games I had were pirated cassettes,
it's no wonder I'm not bothered about piracy these days, i was introduced to it at the age of 4!

    Argggghhh me maties!

The Zzap Megatape would probably be the most famous, but Commodore User and Commodore Format used to have plenty of them too IIRC.

The tshirt I have is the C64 loading screen; tshirt is blue, with the print in cyan (just like the original loading screen). It works very well and is instantly recognisable by those who remember the C64 :D

I had the original version. Trying to carry it around (on the few times I had to get the loading mechanism realigned) was akin to trying to carry a twin-cavity brick - and about the same dimensions.

Never really bought Zzap or CUser, but I have almost every single Commodore Format magazine, bar the first couple, and the very last few. The tapes could be hit and miss for content, but usually more hit than miss. With some absolute gems thrown into the mix on occasion.

How much is a C64 in Ireland these days, anybody know? I stocked up on them 6 or 7 years ago. Think I've maybe 8. Didn't pay more than €10 for any at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,727 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

Depends, you'll see some asking for stupid money on Adverts - €100 for a boxed C64 isn't unusual.

Still though there are bargains out there if you find them in time, I picked up a decent C64, 1082 monitor, 1541 drive and heap of discs all for €60 before Xmas.

Put up a wanted thread on Amibay:

    http://www.amibay.com/forumdisplay.php?27-Commodore

Even if someone doesnt have chips to hand, i bet you'll get a reply by someone who'll point you in the right direction.

Its the best sales forum for Commodore hardware, and its pretty much international although theres more uk sellers than people around europe.

Have a few C64 games but looking for a boxed C64 somewhere. I see one on adverts for €100, the terminator edition. Had this many years ago and ideally would like the same one - but it's without a cassette deck..
