Would buying a Rolex watch be a good idea?

Amen to that! Can't understand people that only wear on special occasions.

Well, maybe if you are the Queen of England or something!

    dont mind them!

get yourself a pre owned no date submariner with the ceramic bezel, if you go to sell it in 5 years time ill eat my hat if you dont get your 5k back + a bit more

If looking for an "investment" then preowned will at least hold most of it's value.

To protect ur investment make sure you buy with box and papers as resale without them is tough. Getting it check by jeweller or someone with knowledge is a must.

Not cool for the people who think they are cool but pre owned with papers is grand.

If you are intending on going to university, then buying a rolex is ridiculous. Even though you haven't made any plans for the 5k, I'm sure your parents may have. Jesus, I sound old. This is coming from the same person who went out and spent 5k on a Tag heuer with my first decent pay check.

Well 4500 Australian, I'm living in Brisbane. Its a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 6. The one with the white face and blue handles. That was 2 years ago now though. My 30th is coming up in August and have my eye on a Breitling transocean, they are awesome watches but so expensive there in OZ. Also liking the Tag Space X but I think its too similar to the one I have to justify getting it.

First time watch - go preowned! Like a new car they deprecate once you take them out of the jewellers. Buy a good relatively new one and have someone else take the first depreciation hit. In a few years and a few bob in your pocket start buying new.

It's an interesting idea and I think you should go for it! If you do loose a few pounds from your initial investment you still get the joy of ownership. I will wager that most folks wouldn't notice, but you will become know as 'yer man with the Rolex' in college as word gets around. Theft/loss are also very real possibilities that you need to consider. Best of luck, I would have loved one at 17!

I'm in agreement with cyrus here, I just picked up a new sub ceramic as a keeper and intend on passing it down to my son in many years to come....many years LOL if he proves to be a good lad.

I mulled over buying my sub ceramic second hand and with the exchange rate and PayPal fees it was working out just a few hundred short of the brand new one I bought from my local AD and at least this way I can track it's history, also some guys were mentioning the price of servicing, my AD advised me that my sub doesn't need a service for 7 years......so I'm happy with that
