I disagree, it's just another form of entertainment like films/tv shows in my opinion, but I've heard plenty of people say that it's sad for anyone above 14 to play them (besides fifa :P). Just wondering what AH thinks :)

People who play video games are usually better multitaskers and problem solvers, it's proven! .. You would have to be sad to not play em ;).

Just another form of entertainment, really. I've known a lot of people who think video games are a waste of time, but love watching sports or Eastenders or whatever.

I think it's sad how it's seen as acceptable to play Fifa if you're older than 14 but simply ignore the vast wealth of quality titles available across multiple genres and broaching many themes - both mature and not-so mature.

No, I don't think it's sad to play video games.

All available quality research points to gamers being pretty awesome.

Ugh I disagree with this ****e too. My friend tries to tell me it improves hand-eye co-ordination, but in fairness hurling would improve it 100x more. (I'm not a hurler btw :P)

    Depends on the game really...

I've played quite a few games that have elements of the story that seriously tug at the ol' heartstrings..

I'm mid twenties and will have a few games of FIFA/Call of Duty/GTA5 weekly without fail. Don't think it's sad at all.

    *squeaky voice in back* Yes.

But really, play a lot of retro ones like Micro Machines or Road Rash from time to time. Just as long as you don't get too involved in it I suppose where it is effecting your health.

Anyone who disagrees needs to get a PS3 and sit down for an hour with The Last of Us or Uncharted 2.

There's video games out there with storylines and emotional impact as strong as any TV show or Film. I think most people realise video games aren't just for kids any more in fairness.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

aye, i used to live with hardcore gamers, would have a quick 10 minute session of sex with their girlfriend so that they could get back to their silly games, women need a proper sexual experience. More fool them for staying with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,779 ✭✭✭Spunge

Not as sad as internet message boards anyway. Get a life losers.

    Not at all.

I play games but not as regularly as I'd like. It's a highly enjoyable form of entertainment.

"How dare you appreciate one of the biggest industries in the world at your age".

Don't see it any differently than anybody wanting to sit down and watch a film for a couple of hours personally.

There are some that I don't see the attraction of (Minecraft - I just don't get it), and some I do (The Walking Dead), but ultimately I can't play them for more than a half hour before I get bored. Just another form of entertainment, not sad, not exceptional, just subject to taste like everything else.

Do many people in this day and age really think gamers are sad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,412 ✭✭✭✭endacl

Once they're not watching 'wrestling' too, or dressing up as their favourite cartoon for conventions, then it's not sad. If they are, it's sad, but it's not the fault of the games.

I hope not or people must think I'm pathetic. 36 and been playing computer games since my Atari and will be till I die. It's actually one thing that makes me look forward to getting old. I imagine how amazing games will be in 50 years or so and how I'll hopefully spend my geriatric years hooked up to a computer trying to level up to a level300 Mage/paladin.

If you enjoy it, are not bothering others with it, and do other stuff in life for the sake of balance - then you need apologise to nobody for it. Nothing sad or pathetic about enjoyment.

Online gaming is a fantastic pastime imho. Pitting your wits against some other random gamer from god knows where is great craic altogether. I've met some sound people from all over the world playing Forza Motorsport on Xbox live. I love it.

I don't think I've read 1 post of yours that didn't reference sex in some way.

I'd say you get told to fcuk off all the time.

I guess it depends on whether or not you're the sort who puts more time into their Dark Souls or World of Warcraft build than they do on meeting and interacting with real people and generally getting on in life.

On the flip side, I've encountered some absolute pond life. More irritating than anything else. One of the big reasons why I don't really participate in online gaming as much.

Mostly, no. But I have a few friends who are completely obsessed and cannot talk about anything else. They spam facebook with random game trailers and advertising their twitch.tv streams like it is normal.

I have been obsessed with computer games in the past but like anything else in this world, moderation is key.

I dunno about this. I think the average gamer is now over the age of 35.

Games are great. Il be playing them til the day I die!

This! I have one friend who tells me its a bit sad, yet she would come in from work, sit down to neighbours at half 5, then Home & Away, Emmerdale, Corrie and Eastenders and then it's 9 o'clock so time for whatever reality tv show is on at the moment.

I hate 99.9% of tv with a passion and I don't really have the attention span to sit down to a film very often, would much rather throw on a game to unwind after work/college.

Funny thing is a lot of over 18 games are marketed towards the under 18s. Like CoD with its special editions including cheap NV goggles and remote controlled cars.

On another note, I remember watching a feature one time about a granny who spent her spare time playing Disgaea 4 and GTAIV. It kept her senses sharp, she said.

How many under 18s have over €100 to spend on these special editions though?
They are marketed at young, working males with more disposable income than sense. I used to be one.:D

Tread poll and thread title mean different things.

    Not sure what to answer.

I don't find gamers to be sad (unless they have suffered a recent bereavement, loss of job, dumped by partner or they just lost their restore point or last life or something) but I find sad games to be sad sometimes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,779 ✭✭✭Spunge

Either i play games 10 hours a day or i dont play them at all.

    I dont **** with moderation.

Its the same with anime, you would have to be really traditional to believe video games are sad. They are just another form of entertainment, much like music, film etc. You do get people who are obsessive, but that happens with any hobby, the important thing is to have a good social life and other interests outside video games while spending a healthy amount of time at them.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,768 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manach

I'd agree with the majority here. To relax with a mate playing co-op for 1/2hour after a long day, hardly betokens something to be apologetic for. Alternative of watching mind-numbing soaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭Davarus Walrus

I can understand computer games as yet another form of media. That people play for an hour or two to unwind. I liked that walking dead game for example; very emotive. Civilization was very cerebral in its time.
It's the obsessive gamers I find weird. 'Competitive gamers' and the like. How does mashing buttons slightly quicker than someone else give any sort of indication of competitiveness? Something slightly sad about a man staying up until 3 in the morning playing xbox online. Nothing really competitive about that.
