Was reading throught the manual of my e60 today and came across this page about " revolution counter " ( see attached )

    I think it's saying 2 things :

    1. that white stripes appear in the rev counter when you start the car and then go away as the engine warms up.

2 And then the other part means don't rev the ****e out of it

Is that what it means in plain English ?

Basically means don't red line your car i.e. Rev the be-jesus out of it. Its worse to do this when the engine is cold and really should be avoided altogether. You should be shifting well before the red line.

    1. Don't have too much fun until the engine warms up.
    2. The car will stop you from over revving when you rev the nuts off it. Try not to let it get to that stage.

Yes, you have white gradations that retract slowly as the engine warms up.

Keep it out of the white when cold and always out of the red. The white disappears as it warms up.

Mmmmm, there aren't any white light gradients like that in my car.

Thing is I've never noticed these white lines when I start the car and never noticed them retracting........maybe my car does not gave this particular thing with the white lines.

Should do, they are not lights, only gradations. Haven't counted them, but when warmed up on mine they go down to 3 from ~10

Mmm, thanks. Will take more notice next time.

When it gets to 3 bars, is that more a less saying that the engine temperature is 90 degrees ? ( like on other cars when the temp gauge reaches 90 ? )

Most cars I had stated in manual, not to drive a car within red zone for prelonged time.
Nothing wrong with reaching red zone when accelerating for few seconds.
Driving at 7000rpm in red zone for 20 minutes though is what should be avoided.

just a fyi, my dad had an 05 5 series petrol, the white line drop off after the engine warm up but his current one 08 5 series diesel doesn't do that.. i think the newer ones just doesn't drop off at all.. i even ask him to check it with other BMWs his friends have and same thing, it doesn't drop off..

Ok, so I am not very observant, checked it out this morning and the white lines do disappear as the car warms up :)
The car at cold had about 10 white lines ( above the 6 on the rev counter )
After a bit of driving it went down to 4 white lines

Is the white line being at 4 in the " after " photo essentially saying that the engine temperature is now at 90 Degrees ?
