Exercise Bike - Haven't a clue

I normally play a game of football once or twice a week and have a GAA training session once or twice a week. I'm reasonably fit for my age (38)

Am injured at the minute (nothing serious) but can't play football or hurling for a few weeks.

I have the use of an exercise bike that a friend of mine is storing in the house here for a few months.

I literally haven't a clue about it. It's fairly new so I presume it has the standard features.

Can anyone give me an idea of what I could be doing with it, maybe 3 or 4 times a week. Just to keep fitness tipping over while I can't play.

How long should I be going on it ?
I presume I can adjust resistance levels in some way. What should I be looking to set it to ?

    Thanks in advance

To be honest I find the cycling fitness does little for my running fitness. They seem to be two compltely different ball games.
I got back from injury cycling and got into regularly cycling 20-30 k. I was out cycling for 2 and a half hours one day so decided next time Id run.
Ran 3k stopping twice two walk. Thought I was fit I was dizzy and everything getting back to the house 20 minutes later.

It will burn your calories though and stop you getting fat while you rest up. Do as much as you can.
Itll take a few Weeks once you get back to running to get up.to speed again runningwise.

I would probably be the same level of fitness as yourself, working out for 1-2 hours, 3-4 days a week. So if all I was able to use was an exercise bike, in order to keep fit, 45 minute session, three times a week. This wud involve 3 mins warm up and 3 cool down. Then one minute with high resistance (as hard as you feel u can go) while remaining sitting one minute easy pace and get your breath back, then one minute with a medium resistance cycling as fast as you can, then a minute to recover, then one minute standing using high resistance again, and so on and so on...mix it up so ur pushing yourself and then recovering, its a form of HIIT training on the exercise bike if u want to look it up, very effective
