Proposed sticky Arcade and Console Resource Thread Discussion

Oisín that scart switcher reviews page is a gem!

I have the first Hama one listed, and I tested it last week both with and without the switcher and couldn't tell the difference. I'm stoked to see it passed all the tests as it was real cheap.

The only con is that the Scart sockets push down when you plug in a cable so the build quality isn't perfect.

Should we have a Sticky for console hardware and picture quality Ciderman?

That would include a link to that page and guides in picture quality etc...

Its a shame boards doesn't have a wiki section for A&R.

We already have Arcade Cab Resources, we should surely have a Games Console Resources thread as more people have consoles than Arcade Cabinets.

It would save us having to keep recommending 60hz + RGB every week.

We could also include info about Flash carts and lots more.

That Thor jobbie looks very similar to the Joytech AV Control Centre 2, also a great piece of kit with tons of RGB SCART sockets on the back. The Banbridge is very good too.

I think there was a crackdown on the number of sticky posts a while back and now its only 3 or 4 per section. It's a pity as we used to have a few handy ones like the "Retro Repair Thread" etc.

The Revenge of..... thread totally doesnt need to be a sticky, as its bumped daily.
The sticky should be swapped out for a Games Console Resources sticky.

    What do the mods think?

Not all mods read every single post in every single thread in their forum, you'd be better off pm'ing Ciderman & Logie to discuss it incase they missed it here

Didn't we already have a games console modding /resource thread but it was undersubscribed.
No, I'm personally happy with it as it is.
I have no issue with repeated rgb enquiries, especially as they happen every few months and, inevitably, sink away into obscurity once the query is answered.
    That's my 2c anyway.
Same goes for queries about flash carts, the topic comes up infrequently and I'd rather not have it front and centre given the dubious company the topic keeps, namely rom sets and the request for links that follows.

Theres a lot more than rgb and 60hz that could go into that thread, they were just 2 recent examples that came to mimd.

If youre worried about people asking about romsets, we could include a line saying no discussion on roms is allowed in the sticky also.

Consider it as a possibility for the future anyway.

Alternatively we could post them in Retrovia.

Steve have you ever thought of putting a wiki on your site?

We could use it as an unofficial A&R wiki or something.

Forgot to mention that it was more of a locked thread i was thinknig i was thinking of, so there wouldnt be any replies or a need to subscribe to it.

I'll make this my last post on the subject, as i dont want to hijack this thread any further. :)

Locked stickies rarely work well in reality, they just become part of the furniture & get ignored after a while.

I am not that hot on seeing any A&R presence moving off forum.
It would be unregulated by mods and could get "interesting" very fast.
The current system means relevant topics stay up while answered and done topics settle down.
If someone is asking the same question yet again just direct them to the search function or, better still, just answer them.
Be kind as we were all new to the scene once!
Plus, you never know when something new might come along.

I have one setup, but just dont use it really(it uses mediaWiki). Plus, most of the action is here on A&R rather than on my little corner of the web :0)

It would be great if we could get some combined information source put together. But yeah, I do know what you guys mean about locked stickies being ignored.

Could change the 'arcade cab resources' sticky thread to a more general 'arcade and retro resources' one and edit the OP to include information from RGB cables/50 and 60hz/step downs to places to buy bits and bobs etc.

So the opening post becomes a source of info and folks can discuss as they currently are for the remainder of the thread.

Yeah updating, or perhaps even scrapping that thread & doing a new updated one for both arcade & console hardware might be one way around it.

I would just ask that the changes be small ones and we see how it goes.
    If that's ok.

Moved everything to a new thread, so it won't interfere with the Gets thread.

Well what I proposed isn't really a change, it's just fine tuning one of the threads that we currently have stickied already. It wouldn't affect anything in the forum :)
    • Change 'Arcade cab resources' title to 'Arcade and Retro Resources'
    • Edit op in the thread to contain information which would be useful for new people.
    • Benefits of RGB over composite/RF
    • Explanation of 50/60hz.
    • etc etc

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

    Grand.
I'll have a look at the edit later on, I'm up to my neck in Gardening right now!
Also, still sore after losing all those Souls in No Mans Wharf :(

If you decide it's worth doing, have some poor soul write all the info out for you. Or maybe use this thread to coral all the relevant info from people they'd like to see in the sticky

We can write up a draft on this page and add to it and edit it.

Retr0 if you're reading I'd love your input, you're the most hardcore when it comes to getting the best experience from consoles.

There needs to be a 'Your childhood was a lie!!' bolded section about 50hz :pac:

    Right,
The Arcade Cab Resource thread has been renamed.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055143303
Now all we need is DEFINITIVE information on RGB/S-Video/Component and the various manufacturers and consoles as well as links and all the rest of the busy little world of hooking retro machines up to tvs's both CRT and LCD/Plasma/Old Mans Ulcerated Leg and so on.
We can post test articles here then ship them into the thread proper once the information post is definitive.
And so it should be with any other matters.
Of course, I expect there to be overlap with the console modding threads, where it concerns actually rewiring a console to output better sound, RGB etc, and thats still cool.
    Ok lads and lassies,
    Have at it!

Perhaps some type of template might be a good way to get the ball rolling:
    Video Signals:
RF - Description, pro's, cons, pic of connection
AV - Description, pro's, cons, pic of connection
    AV Scart - "
    RGB Scart - "
    S-Video - "
    Component - "
    HDMI - "
Info on multi-input solutions (scart switchers, hdmi switches etc)

    Console Regions:

    PAL - Description, pro's, cons
    NTSC - Description, pro's, cons
    50Hz - Description, pro's, cons
    60Hz - Description, pro's, cons
(Maybe embed a YT vid of Sonic 1 50/60Hz comparison?

    CRT V LCD/Plasma

Brief explanation of both, pro's & cons of each of them.

    Scanlines

Scanline solutions for flat panel displays etc

And all that kind of thing...

Can we copy and paste articles from other sites? Some great info out there on RGB etc from fairly unknown websites.
With links to original article of course.

Thats a great start Myrddin (damn I still feel like its too early to let EnterNow go!).

I'm a bit tied up at the moment so can't do a perfect guide at the moment, but will soon.

I think short and concise with links will be the way to go.

I'd be in agreement there. Keep it all laid out, clear, concise, & easy to read. The use of links then to outside content would help in keeping it simple.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Or even keep the first post something along the lines of the template above, with brief explanations on all the usual suspects...& then subsequent posts could be devoted to detailed explanations as Steve mentioned. Like post 2 could go into detail about one thing, post 3 something else. Keep it free of all discussion etc. Just my 2c as always :)

Man I wish boards had blogging section or wiki.

In regards to RGB, all the information you need is below :)
