Patella (knee) pain syndrom (Squash)

Could anyone advise on my issue that I am having with my knees.

I have suffered what I would describe as patella pain syndrome for over a year. I have been an on/off squash player for over 7 years however started playing intensely in early 2013 thus causing my injury.

I got an MRI scan done of both knees in April 2013.

I received a verbal report of the MRI scan last year stating that there was just minor wear and tear that would be rectified over time with adequate exercises.

I have since been doing the balance and reach exercise regularly to strengthen the area around the knee. It is noticeable that I have gained leaner quadriceps muscles however the pain in the patella area has persisted. If I do a squat exercise my knees would be very irritated for a few days.

I have not played squash since the injury. I did go running about twice a week last summer however I have had to stop as the pain has gotten worse.

I have arranged to see a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon in 2 weeks that is charging 180euro. Can anyone who has had similar problems advise what I should or could do.

I am always aprehensive about visiting consultants as they can sometimes charge a fortune and intentially not diagnose the issue so that you re-visit.

Without knowing anything about you I'm guessing your hamstrings and glutes are weak as hell and not controlling deceleration of your leg very well during lunging motions. Any sort of ankle tightness too will feed up the chain to the knee.

    Thanks Hanley,

Can you suggest an exercise for the gluts and hamstrings that are not intrusive of the knees? The balance and reach exercise is not working as I have been doing it religiously for over a year. I have also tried the leg curl exercise every once in a while

Sorry, given this is an ongoing medical issue I am going to have to lock this thread. It's against the rules to offer or seek medical advice. Any questions, PM me.
