Blood donation

I'm donating blood this evening, would there be anything wrong with me going to the gym beforehand? It'll be a hard session of squatting so i'll be pretty tired afterwards. I'd rather not head in there and be told something like 'You're already fatigued from the gym so we can't take your blood'. I know that I can't go afterwards, wouldn't fancy squatting with a woozy head!

Give them a ring and see what they say. Fair play for giving blood.

You should be fine. You need to eat within the few hours before donating, though. You can't donate if you haven't eaten in the three hour prior to it.

They'll do a prick test on your finger firs, to check your hhaemoglobin levels. Once they're fine, you can donate

Shouldn't be a problem, definitely don't train afterwards!

    You'll sleep well tonight

    No problem at all.

Especially since you can gorge on all those triple-packs of biscuits after.

    And then sleep soundly tonight.

Years ago I went to donate after training, and my levels were too low. Just to say it does sometimes happen.

As long as you're over 8 stone and over 18. And you've eaten in the last few hours and you didn't have a cold or flu recently. You should be fine.

    Fair play for donating blood

There's a list of questions on their website, and recommendations on preparing beforehand and what to do after.

Not sure if answering no would definitely rule you out on the eligibility quiz

It can affect your Iron level, if I knew I was donating I wouldn't go to the gym first.

Went to the donation clinic last night, didn't train beforehand because I was worried that training along with blood donation would make driving home dangerous. Turns out I couldn't donate because of epilepsy medication I was on over 2 years ago! I still managed to convince some friends to come along though so it wasn't a waste of time.

If anyone in Galway is interested in donating the clinic is running in the Clayton hotel until Thursday evening, all of the taytos and biscuits ya can eat afterwards!

One of the questions in the eligibility quiz threw me. I don't actually know if I've ever received a transfusion. (Presume plasma doesn't count anyway?)

I always thought when you were pumping iron, it was going in...

im a regular at donating, but the nurses there have told me in the past they preferred if i didnt train before donating, even if i loaded up the food before the donating process.. but certain nurses have different opinions, in saying that, anyone who can donate..SHOULD...
people often say they dont have time..you will make the time if you need a transfusion!

Agree with most people on here. There are lots of things that can prevent somebody from being eligible to donate (such as having had a piercing or tattoo in the 4 months prior) but training before would not be a deal breaker. As long as you have eaten and are hydrated. Obviously don't plan on training hard the day after donating as you will need to recover.

    Fair play for donating.
