The 7th annual Mick Byrne Randonee will take place on Sunday May 25th, starting at Dalkey. As usual there will be three adventurous tours on some of the most beautiful roads in Co Wicklow.
Feed stations provided along the routes to keep your strength up. All in memory of a man who wanted people of all ages to experience the joy, excitement and adventure of cycling! The 100km and 160km are great preparation for the Wicklow 200 and the 200km has over 3000 mtrs of climbing, a true challenge.

Exceptional day on the bike, arguably imho the best 200 to be had in Wicklow. Sadly I am on holidays for it this year. :(

God help me I would love the 200 this year. The 160 nearly crucified me last time. Most memorable day on the bike ever.

Have to agree i did the 200 last year and it was class far tougher than the ww200 but not quite as tough as the evil200

What sort of training are people doing for the 200? Considering giving it a go, but not sure how much i'd have to build before then.

Currently putting in one or two 30k spins (power focused) midweek with a 90-100 k relaxed spin (with hills) at the weekends. Averaging about 27kph on the solo weekend spins. Never done more than 120k on a single ride so not really sure what to expect!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,764 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

A rule of thumb seems to be that you can cycle what you can do during a week, on a single day handy enough if you put your mind to it. I would imagine you'll be fine, maybe chuck in a couple of longer spins between now and then, or sign up for the Mick Byrne 200 and then the WW200 will be a breeze! :)

If you've done 120k in one go you should be fine to get around. The MB is all hills, but no one hill is undoable, it just the constant attrition can wear you down. Do it at your own pace, don't worry about speed or keeping up with anyone and you'll be grand.

This bit is critical. Feed and water religiously

Coming back home to do the 200 with my dad and brother. Unfortunately it'll most likely be ridden at a snails pace as they have put in absolutely no time on the bike but it's as good an excuse as any to see and chat to them again. Looking forward to it.

Ah sure it's only another 40km. Crawling up vico road with the bike on my back would have been easier on hindsight.

It was glorious last year, must see can I get the day off to get out to it.

one of the things that make the mb more challenging and memorable than the ww200 is that there are less riders across the 3 routes meaning you could well find yourself riding solo for a lot of it if you get dropped, you can nearly hide in a group throughout the ww200 regardless of your form.

Signed up for MB as first Sportive/ Audax event based on recommendations of club members who have taken part in the past. Had originally planned to use it as preparation for WW200 but will make the call at the 160/ 200 point when I see how the legs are holding up.

Hope to see some Boardies over the course of the day as I know there were a fair few last year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭Konkers

Have signed up for the 200 also. I thought this was the toughest event I did last year. Not sure how I found my way around without relying on the route sheet or gps.

Edit: Actually as I recall there were markings on the road is that right????

Thinking of the 200. Much tougher than the Orwell? Is there a cap on numbers?

Yep, there have been yellow arrows on the road the last couple of years but you still have to keep your eyes peeled for them.

There is a cap of 250riders over the three different routes, and it will fill if last year is anything to go by. Tougher than the Orwell Randonee if your doing the 200.

Just signed up for the 200k. Done it the last two years and it is a great event.

Not nearly as much training done as previous years but sure that the point of a challenge I guess!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,098 ✭✭✭NamelessPhil

I've signed up for this too. I've ridden the full route once already this year as an audax permanent.

The climbing is pretty evenly split, 1800m for the first 100km and 1800m for the second 100km. It is tough. I found the long slow drag out of Woodenbridge on a very narrow road to be mentally taxing, it's only 80km along the route. The other part I found tough was the climb up Slieve Maan, I've ridden it a fair few times before including during last year's Evil 200, but this year I had to talk myself up it. I was fine for the last 60km from Laragh.

It was great preparation for riding Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

    See ye on the day!

is it OK to decide between the 160k and the 200k on the day - when you get to the turn off for the 200k?

I've signed up for the 160k but if some lower back issues I'm having go away then I'd like to do the 200k instead. I won't really know until I see how it's behaving closer to the day and particularly on the day itself.

Also interested in this as other club members are opting for the 160km but would love to do the 200km if anything left in the tank at the turn off point

Not really because the 200 starts at 8 and the 160 starts at 9 if memory serves. Either way they start at different times.

In another question are there still places available? Haven't signed up yet.

The first 90k is common, so you could start the 200 at 8am and then change your mind to the 160 while 90K in. I wouldn't be in any danger of getting to the final control point before it opened.

I would point out at the third control point that they shouldn't expect me at the 200k middle point - just in case they are tracking people who haven't showed up.

Even if I went out with the 160k crowds I'd make it to all the checkpoints on the 200 comfortably inside Audax time-limits. They're very generous and I'm thoroughly middle-of-the-road speed-wise :)

I just want to make sure that Sorrento wouldn't mind this for a reason that I haven't thought of.

WHAT ARE THE CUT OFF TIMES ???????????

    AVEAGE SPEED ??????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,440 ✭✭✭cdaly_

Cut off times are based on the audax speed limits. In audax, you may not complete the ride faster than a 30kph end to end average and you must complete it faster than 15kph average. For any particular control, calculate the time for that distance at 15 and at 30 kph and add to the start time to get the opening time for that control.

eg. For a control at 60km with an 08.00 start, you get:

    At max speed, 60/30 = 2hr. 08.00 + 2hr = 10.00
    At min speed, 60/15 = 4hr. 08.00 + 4hr = 12.00
So 60km control opens at 10.00 and closes at 12.00.

Later controls will open later but will be open for longer...

It would be my first Audax event with no rain or brutal headwind, or both.
