Foreigners - are we obsessed with them?

There were so many threads about foreigners, it was a case of if you can't beat them, join them.

Are we completely obsessed with foreigners? Do they buy all the chickens? Do they eat dog or swan? What attracts them to Ireland of the hundred thousand welcomes?

I think it might be the weather.

    What about the foreign Irish.

Sure we write songs about their emigration. Trasna na dtonnta, and all that craic. It was great when we could lament them properly before. Now they're back every second weekend on Ryanair.

My mother had a rant about the foreigners here last week. They were eastern european.

I tried to explain to her that her babies are more foreign in australia than the eastern european are here. She didnt get it.

How long has it been? Time to get over it.

What attracts them to Ireland of the hundred thousand welcomes?

In the case of Newstalk's Dil Wickremasinghe it was "Riverdance".

This sounds like a joke, but it is absolutely true.

well at first it is because the places we come from are so bad and we believe all the thousand welcomes stuff..

by the time truth dawns we have burned our boats and the places we came from have got even worse.

i beat it by naming my house grace and when i close the gate i leave ireland behind and enter the state of grace..if the pope can create an independent state .....

Oddly enough, I was talking to a man from Venezuela the other day and he said he likes Irish weather and commented on our rain - explaining that quite often the rain here is gentle rain; tiny little drops that barely touch you, compared to the monster drops of rain that bucket down and soak you within seconds in Venezuela.

So, are we allowed to eat chicken now or what?

It's true. The rain here is very gentle. Where I lived, the rain physically hurts you :p

My uncle is from Barcelona and was giving out about all the foreigners living there. Strange thing is his wife (my Aunt is Irish and has been married and living over there with him for 40 years). His children are half Irish. Yet he sees no connection. Its strange, really strange.

I don't mind the rain as much. I would be happier if it didn't rain so often, but that's how it is :)

(And I get away with wearing colourful wellies :D)

Does anyone have any links to stats regarding the amount of people who immigrate to Ireland and from what countries?
    Thanks

I think this is the biggest myth of all. I have yet to find where all these mega rides of foreigners are hiding. Every country has mingers and beauts and we're the same. You'd swear the way some people go on that we're all as good looking as black bulling heifers here.

Ireland is like the Ellis Island of Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,910 ✭✭✭OneArt

    It's the same everywhere.

I find it particularly funny in Germany. Speaking English in some cities here is seen as trendy. Sometimes people will come up to my English-speaking friends and I and try and practice their English. Then they'll turn around and moan in German to their friends about people speaking Turkish on the streets and not integrating. If they were in Ireland, they'd be the same people griping about Eastern Europeans.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I imagine Greenlanders would come on a Danish passport, and Sahrawis would have Moroccan one, or a 1951 refugee doc.

    Anyone know for certain?

I was in Venezuela and Colombia for 6 weeks in sept/oct a few years ago. the rain was as heavy as anything we get here and there was severe flooding where I was. But the rain started at 3 pm every day. Up to that point it was gloriously sunny. And it stopped at 6pm every day.
And the rain was warm, so warm. I could have showered in it.

I think I'd take sever flooding and walking around streets with water up to my knees if it was that warm.

Greenland is Denmark alright. I'm pretty certain you're right about the Sahrawis too.

Depends. Most places have a lot of variation, to be sure. OTOH, the Swedes are incredibly good-looking.

You have to see it to believe it.

Foreign people care about their pets much less than Irish people.

The Spanish are notorious for pinching friendly dogs.

Haven't been to Sweden so can't really comment but I'm fairly well travelled and I'm mesmerised by this notion that everywhere else in the world is over run with fabulous looking people but in Ireland we all look like trolls. It's bullshiite.

There's a small group of people who have never worked a day in their life who complain about foreigners "taking our jobs". They're noisy because they've all day to sit around posting and turning up to SWP meetings.

I think the Irish have always had a fear of outsiders not sure if it's to do with the 800 years of British rule or what but we seem to have a major bee in our bonnet about people who aren't "one of us"

I know at least four English people of Caribbean, Indian, Cypriot and Irish heritage who would rant a mile about the anti social behavior of Pakistani and Somali youths in their respective areas (misogny and Islamist extremism being the primary gripes) . Just because you have a foreign background doesn't mean you can be immune from calling it how you see it, and from what these people have told me the behaviour of some of these kids is appalling.

Not to mention that your average Eastern European in Ireland will have an even more negative view on Romas than we do.

That anti immigration party that was founded a few months ago has a dutch woman on their committee.
I do think it's ironic that an immigrant comes to ireland to complain about immigration into ireland.

People just say that on the internet, to be edgy.

The Swedish thing is gospel though.

Not if it is the wrong type of immigrant.

I wouldn't have a problem with a self made Chinese takeaway owner of 20 years standing who pays his taxes moaning that there are too many Roma gypsies in the country, as he has every right to say it. Just because one is a foreigner it doesn't make your opinion on the state of the country less valid if you have paid your dues.

There's some proper stunners in this country. Dublin was hopping with them yesterday. As a nation we're not ugly. The only curious thing is that most of the proper hotties are rich kids. I'm not from a wealthy area, and I have to be honest, I've never seen anyone to match them where I'm from. I've heard it been put down to access to sports, dietary education, whatever. But there has to be more to it than that. I can count on one hand the number of attractive people I grew up around. The women in the surrounding private estates were, and always will be, better looking.

Good looking women may choose wealthier partners, producing good looking, rich offspring. I suppose.

I have no idea if wealthy women select good looking partners?

Health clubs, dermatologists, cosmetic dentistry, cosmetic surgery and copious hair and beauty treatments all cost money. The air of confidence helps as well.

Beauty is subjective. Swedish men are stereotypically looked at as extremely feminine. Light featured men are not valued in Western society. The vast majority of successful male models all have dark features. I am struggling to even think of a successful blonde male model to be honest.

Black Irish men destroy the majority of Europe dimorphically for the most part. Sean O Pry is the top male model in the world atm for a reason.

I also prefer women with dark features and light eyes so I disagree with your *opinion" on Swedish beauty.

Well, it is just an opinion, of course.

Perhaps you are right in what you say about Swedish men. I hadn't given that a great deal of thought. Swedish ladies obviously go for them.:D
