It must be tempting for them to complete the set, Quick invasion then pull out saying "only kidding". But of course some of those countries didn't exist when Britain was on the war path around the world.

So Britain has invaded Antarctica too? Or does that not count as its a continent in its own right? Anyone have a link to the article? Sounds fishy to me

And yet, every time I go there, they're so polite, health and safety conscious and PC, I'm amazed they don't just implode, let alone found the will to go forging abroad. Also the lads are a bit fey tbh, have they bred the warlike bit out of them over the last few years??

The ironic thing is how many people from former colonies have followed the British home and now enjoy their welfare system, lol.

(I am well aware there are many hard working immigrants, that wasn't the point.)

San Marino and Greenland are two others.

Edit: googled, they did occupy Greenland in WW2 with the US so I guess technically they did.... sheesh

When did Britain invade Finland, Japan, Brazil (amongst others)...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭DM addict

Just looked at the actual article - many of these were not 'invaded' in the traditional sense of an army marching in
Only a comparatively small proportion of the total in Mr Laycock's list of invaded states actually formed an official part of the empire.

The remainder have been included because the British were found to have achieved some sort of military presence in the territory – however transitory – either through force, the threat of force, negotiation or payment.

Incursions by British pirates, privateers or armed explorers have also been included, provided they were operating with the approval of their government.

And they "invaded" San Marino after it was occupied by the Germans in WW2:

I believe the list includes any country that Britian has had military action in it's history

From this article which is the one the OP is on about
Only a comparatively small proportion of the total in Mr Laycock's list of invaded states actually formed an official part of the empire.
The remainder have been included because the British were found to have achieved some sort of military presence in the territory – however transitory – either through force, the threat of force, negotiation or payment.

I'm sure we had a thread on this 2 years ago when the book was published.

This article is kinda silly. It claims Britain invaded France endless amount of times, one of them as being as early as 200AD, where Celtic Britons "invaded" "France". Neither the concept of Britain nor France existed back then. Sensationalist history, pretty much.

The book it's based on was only done for a bit of a laugh so it's not exactly a serious take on history.

They might well be, I'm sure you'd do well if you are that inclined.

With that in mind a number of British Regiments (not British Irish Regiments Like Connaught Rangers) recruited here for a significant time eg East Kent's.

So we might claim some part in this

It also brought a lot of benefits with regard to infrastructure (India, Africa), and systems of government

Invaded implies that Britain entered at force. Plenty of those countries (including Ireland) invited the British or only had Protectorate status to begin with, i.e. The British never wholly ruled them but provided military or diplomatical help. It would be interesting to see how many countries were actually forcefully invaded.
