I know we have no Gorfield playing in it this year to keep us excited. But there has been some serious scoring down there already!

The Qualifier that I played in last year had 9 people come through from it this year. They included a lad called David Brady from Sligo who shot a 69 to be leading qualifier. But that wasn't all the good stuff, they had an 8 man playoff to decide the last 3 spots!

Now the main event has kicked off and the same fella, David Brady, playing of a handicap of 1, has shot a 7 under par 64!

He was 9 under par after 15 holes!!!!!

That is some serious shooting and I'm really looking forward to tracking the scoring online for the weekend. Anyone who is in the area for the week should definitely go down. Looks like the scoring is gonna stay hot, like the weather, for the weekend! :D

We're in Sligo this weekend and the conditions are sublime. Was out at Rosses Point beach today and it was some sight to see them hitting the 16th and teeing off from the 17th. Apparently someone shot a 64 this morning....no wind and the rough cut way back. Heading over to watch the start of the match play tomorrow and can't wait.

    Loire.

Yep another round of stroke play qualifying tomorrow and then the matchplay starting on Sunday. Would love to be down there this weekend.

Was chatting one of the lads from Athlone this morning who was down there today, he said the course was in perfect condition with perfect weather! A real treat for anyone thinking of going down!

The top 10 scores today - Par 71.

    1st David Brady 64
    2nd Geoff Lenehan 66
    3rd Jack Hume 66

Some serious scoring, full scores after day 2 for all here, cut at 148 by the looks of it:
    http://www.gui.ie/connacht/results/results/west-of-ireland-open-championship-(1)
Although match play is a great format with it's own set of skills I don't think I fully agree with it as a decider for such a major championship. For instance there's a massive 14 shot difference between the qualifiers and all it does from my understanding is rank the qualifiers. The best qualifier (Reeve Whitson) could have a bit of a nightmare round or just get unlucky to be knocked out next whereas a full strokeplay format would allow him recover or use his incredible first two rounds.
Anyway good luck to the players and let the best golfer win.

Defending champion Rory McNamara out in the first round of matchplay.

My thinking would be the same, but it seems to be the preferred format doesn't it.
British Amateur is Matchplay and I think the US the same. It can lead to a real anti climax too, in the case of the British Am last year, I seem to recall the final was pretty much over well before the end of the second round.

Gary McDermott gone aswell. Bit surprised by that one. But sure its all on the day!

Dermot McElroy with a hole in one at the 13th.

A few interesting results from the first round

Good win for the young fella, who shot the course record, over John Greene.

Robbie Cannon 1st through to the 3rd round with a 4/3 win over Des Morgan.. I reckon he could be in with a shout having won 2 events in 3 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    Cannon has the experience here.

Watched McElroy last year at Irish, some golfer.

When you see the scores coming in from these guys it makes you feel so **** at golf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

When I watched McElroy last year couldn't believe you have to be better to go pro.
Just looked it up he is 63 ranked amateur in world.

    (-4) handicap.

Just reading he is holding out till British Amateur in Portrush. Plans to go pro.

    +4 ;)

Well he did have the -4 in brackets so technically.....
By coincidence Poulter was -4 when he turned pro, and yes minus 4, the same side of zero as us mere mortals...

    What??? You serious!!!!

    That's crazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 753 ✭✭✭denishurley

Isn't there some story that he didn't want to pay to enter competitions so even though he was improving the handicap wasn't coming down?

Had to graft away at a full time job as assistant pro when he was younger.
Didn't play in many comps, or maintain an active HC as a result.

He was -4 when turning pro, but he wasn't really ;)

Ah I see that makes more sense so

Lads it is (-4) on Gui website. So they won't get it wrong.

    It is a confusing notation.

Or perhaps all this is unfamiliar.

anybody know why brackets are used versus saying +

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 753 ✭✭✭denishurley

I suppose it's that technically that most handicaps have an unspoken minus in front of them and that's never written, so (-4) conforms to that. 'Handicap' is probably the wrong word, as it's only the plus-players who are actually handicapped.

If you golf at Ceann Sibéal, the card says 'Buntáiste', the Irish for 'advantage' above the slot where you write your handicap, which is a more correct way of looking at it when you're playing stroke

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

So it is an Irish solution to an Irish problem.

But in reality we are all negative and they are positive.
    When working out nett.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,512 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Its written as minus on the gui site as that orders the list properly in order of handicap. Database gonna database ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    Lol.
    That is ridiculous if true.
Somebody needs to improve their programming .

    Young Brady in trouble.

    Funny watching it online. Comments.

Is a number in brackets by definition a minus and a minus minus is equal to a plus?

I think so but I'm not 100% minus minus tbh

If one minus was outside the brackets and one minus was inside it would equal a plus.

    -(-4) = +4 as far as I remember

Yes that is right. Knew that earlier but not too familiar with how golf competitions work.

so above would work like this.

    nett = (score)-(handicap).

Predicting a Whitson vs Hurley final.

Just because I think they are the two best players left in it.

Should be an interesting days golf tomorrow. I will go for a Cannon and Hurley final.. Robbie as I know him though Whitson has been the form player so far and Hurley destroyed Lyons in the last round and looks to be in top form.

    phpwiLRba_thumb_image.jpeg

2nd shot from Robbie Cannon on 18 to win the match.. Some golf it sounded like birdies to win with very few dropped shots from any of the 4 players.

Jack Hume is 2 up and was about 5 under according to the live scoring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,512 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Jack Hume won it 3/2 with a birdie on 16. Played some golf!

A/S going down 17... Tough Tough hole and both players seem to a bit edgy.

Went out and played golf this evening instead of watching the final. Was playing with a friend of mine who's in college in Maynooth and knows Hume and says he is an unbelievable golfer.

I'm absolutely delighted for him. Well deserved!
