For a prospective Garda, you seem to have little to no research done, that allowance was disbanded along with rent allowance and 60, 000 other allowances they got ! :P

The funny thing about all of this is that most of you here expect to walk into a job that pays 29,000 euro off the bat with absolutely no formal qualifications. Most graduates would be chuffed to get a salary like that yet some of you expect it.
And then you have the cheek to ridicule me for raising the topic?

    Now that's entitlement.

Formal qualifications - hmmm. A nvq, 11+, etc is a formal qualification and so are the gcse's they require.

So bemuse me what is your degree in?

What is your obsession with guns? A firearms licence is easy to get if you are competent and have access to ground, a need and not a criminal. There are qualifications in shooting too!

In terms of salary I've been on 45k with no degree but got f'd off with all the graduates who I had to keep showing how to do the job. Take IT and the specialist courses you can do on ccie, programming, different servers, windows etc which means you an expert on those subjects as opposed to a degree which will give you a broad overview on some of the subject matters. Now do you understand or will you need to attend a few lectures and sit an exam?

So do you want to be based in the university area or would short strand, ardoyne or waterside be ok? But seriously if you have never done the AC I doubt you will pass.

And by the way you can't walk into the role. If you don't run round the Pca you're out!

Allright i feel i must air my views on this topic not that anyone really cares and i know this so dont bother abusing me afterwards. First of all, Im a garda reserve in the South and am doing a masters in criminal justice. Unfortunatly due to incredibly difficult aptitude tests i failed to be accepted into the intake of 300 Garda recruits this year but i can always go for it again. I saw the post on the PSNI recruitment page and said to myself...'ah sur deck it ill chance it'.

I can tell you now that the majority of people, including myself will more than likely not pass the initial selection test. So people DO NOT GET YOUR HOPES UP! These test are designed to trick you so get good at them.
With regard to pay. DOES IT MATTER IF YE HAVE A BLEEDING DEGREE!. No it dosent. I have a DUCKING masters for gods sake, but i have no job, all my friends are off working in good jobs and i havent a bob! We all have to start somewhere so if you do get in count it as a blessing and if you consider yourself intelligent go for promotion in a few years and ull get better pay then.
Finally people are struggling to find jobs they are good at especially myself. For years i have struggled working with my father doing farm and construction work to the point that i cant stand it anymore. If i fail to get accepted to the PSNI i might just through the hat in a chance becoming a solicitor next year. A lot of people have dreamt of being police officers their entire lives. Im not taking away from this at all but i do not feel that it is appropriate to wish failure on a person from the anonymity of a computer screen.

Finally i wish the very best of luck to people who are applying and maybe ill meet some of ye at the ISTs, interview or maybe a Garnerville itself!
    Keep the Faith!

I'm not aware of the market in ROI, but training contracts in NI and the mainland are like gold dust. Big financial burden, along with long hours and a lot of mundane admin style work. I wouldn't suggest it unless your heart is completely set on it.

Steering more on topic - anyone else wondering how they're going to test ICT competency at AC stage this time round?

    Here's a familiar phrase for the future;

''Would you like fries with that?''

    Yeah you're future perhaps!

Just a friendly piece of advice. These are the qualities the PSNI are looking for.

    Decision Making
    Leadership – Openness to change
    Leadership – Service Delivery
    Professionalism
    Public Service
    Working with others

So far you've failed in my opinion to show any of these qualities. I think it's very petty you are so degrading to others and can't understand why you continue to use the forum to stir up s**t.

Whatever you're lacking in life I hope you find it soon, at least then you'll maybe feel happier and more confident in yourself so you won't feel the need to lash out, be so condescending and spiteful towards potential colleagues. Good luck with your application and if you prove unsuccessful, you've always got your degree to fall back on. All the best

Lol I'm done with junior. I've said my piece. Yeah I've pulled pints and done a lot of dirty work, doesn't make me any more or less of a candidate as he/she thinks. I just feel sorry for junior, GV is going to be a lonely place if he/she is fortunate to get there. Sitting in their room while the rest of us crack on with our work and enjoy a bit of banter with each other.

During this campaign I have decided to take a step back from the boards for the sake of my sanity.

After 1000 odd posts I heard it all before. I recall having a 10 odd page discussion on how important life experience is to the job. Flicking through the last few pages I see its a new campaign, same discussions.

Unfortunately in the lull between actual developments in the process people get way-lead and off topic.

Roll on IST's, so we have something recruitment related to natter about.

Oh but it's entertaining, when I hear the life experience is better than a degree argument I imagine over zealous neighbourhood watchers, makes me giggle whilst I wait for a date. Plus I can hear my sister who is constantly telling me the job is 10% chasing bad guys, 90% sitting at your desk doing the paper work for catching the bad guys

    You're easily entertained.

No neighbour watching here. Just some of us have had a number of years dealing with situations that you will find yourself dealing with as a psni constable.

As for 90% sitting at a desk doing paperwork... don't hyperbole.

Yes there's a lot of paperwork, but it's not a desk job by any stretch.

Don't tell me my history degree won't stand to me, our exams were always last and would have to negotiate the library to home late at night amongst drunken revelers lol :)))

Wasn't an intentional exaggeration re paperwork, honestly doesn't bother me, just commenting on what someone in the job, well a Garda, notices about newbies the fact that they don't realise how much admin is involved in the job. To be fair she's moved through the ranks so I can well imagine her job is a hell of a lot of paper work

A history degree! Sure there's no future in that.

To be fair there has never been anything on here I didn't already know, could have found out myself, or actually helped me do better in testing, just nice to see others are going through the same difficulties/delays etc and crack a few jokes, some good some not.

I want to get into the Police whatever it takes(PSNI or other forces) so this forum is just another way for me to get more information.

Junior 1 banned for 1 week for trolling and taking the thread off topic. He is only new here but made a very bad first impression.

Non compliance with forum rules on his return and his ban will be made permanent.

    Please, back on topic

In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Got to love google lol ;)

Not that im defending his later behaviour but maybe people should also consider that they shouldnt have jumped on him for his first legitimate question. Look at it this way if we are sucessful some of us will be on 4k less because we dont have an ecdl cert or gcse IT. People come to this forum for all kinds of info
