    Hello all,

I just spotted we are down one rancher in here
    :(

I always had him down as an older head, who had been sheep farming a good while, so had good knowledge but also was fairly progressive...

And it made me think - how long are other lads at the sheep game?

I am only farming myself since 2008, so I'm only a pup really ;)

hope he comes back , his input to this forum will be missed

I'm farming since 1971, when my dad died at a young age

we always had a few sheep but when we got hit by repeated tb outbreaks in the late 70's we upped sheep numbers considerably

Only 1 year but quite successful so far, good help from neighbours. Cheap enough farm enterprise to get going in.

Farming since I came out of ag college in 07...4th year in sheep, flock increasing every year since....much to the discust of my oul lad!..lol

took over in 2008, always had a lot of sheep but all sheep now. More to do with focusing on one enterprise as work off farm as well. Would have no issue going back into cattle / tillage but do love da auld sheep :)

Ah no, always looked forward to his replies and posts, extremely knowledgable in sheep farming, will be missed here.

Started officially here in 08 as well but have owned sheep since 2001. Getting harder and harder each year!

Farming in my own right since 1997 I believe, there or thereabouts anyway. Would have been knocking around with the ould fella on his farm before that.

The place won't be as interesting without ranchers input.
I'm farming about 3 years, so still learning. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Don't worry about it Jt. According to the CSO the average age of a farmer in Ireland is 54 !!! . So someone who's only farming a few years might not necessarily be a spring chicken !!!

Started here September 2013 first year lambing and so far doing ok. Threatened to sell them all a few times and then looked forward to lambing next year already. Working full time 6 days a week doesn't help and coupled with getting married the end of November it'll be a busy year.

3rd season here. But had them back in 1990, when got cleared out with TB. we knew nothing about sheep then, the fact that we bought 180 ewe lambs to start with will prove that! As cows built up again, sheep numbers declined. The last year was 2001, we had them on an outfarm about 12 miles away, when the movement of animals was banned, due to the foot & mouth outbreak in the UK. Was a sickener trying to lamb them so far away, without proper housing etc. Sold the lot that back end. Started out with 30 again in 2011, and building up numbers again. Hope to double numbers for next year.

My favourite time is the evening, a nice evening mind you, when they're all fed to the gills on grass and settled down for the night. All you can hear is the birds singing.

    Hello all,

I just spotted we are down one rancher in here
    :(

Sorry to hear that. He could be controversial in the main forum. Didn't agree with all his views but admired how he fought his corner.

He will be a big loss to the sheep forum. He was very knowledgable and vey good for sharing info. Hopefully he will be back here soon under a new name.

Farming on our own since 2009, would of being farming with / through father before that.
I find sheep farming it's generally great or bad, not in between.
When good lots would say they're great, when bad what you doing with them get rid

    Guess who!!!!!!!!
Bad morning here Wednesday, had to shoot the ewe that put out the lamb bed, came on boards then.....another infraction...wtf three in a fortnight, also being warned to go through my posts to take out anything that might identify me...just thought this is getting waaaay too serious.
also involved in something in real life at the moment that, if it works out, will raise my profile
Then just to really annoy me, the sheep forum got really interesting.....so I'm back.
Owed you guys more than just fecking off without saying a word, hope we can continue where we left off.
John if you find a way to stop sheep getting ****ty in may/june tell me about it, shear here in end aug, and they actually get spotlessly clean by then, hard to believe,

Always kept sheep but used them to improve pasture with cattle with 1 ewe to the acre. Now all sheep and happy out. No wild cattle, just easily managed sheep and lots of them.

Dabbling in sheep since 07' - steep learning curve to say the least and any success I've had is thanx to good advice and guidance from the in-laws who keep an eye on the show when I'm away at work.

I used to farm part time before about 15 years ago. Bucket calfs
And sold them as 2 year olds.then along came a few limousine calfs and Shirley cross. Then had some fun with them trying to jump over walls and not being able to be caught. Enough to put me off farming for a long time. Reinterred farming in recent years. This time with sheep. No looking back and won't ever have cattle ever again .I enjoy the sheep
