In this two-part documentary we enter the pressure cooker world of golf played by those on the margins of the professional game. Over three of the most crucial months of their sporting careers we see if these journeymen golfers can hold their own in the ultra competitive and unforgiving world of pro golf.

Part 1 of "The Long Walk" airs Wednesday the 16th of April at 10pm on Setanta Ireland and available on Freeview.

Trailer looks very very good, it should be very interesting.

sounded like yer man (Mark I think) from Waterville who was on the Big Break Ireland a few years back. will be interesting viewing and good to see how pro golf is not all about the millions of dollars we get to see week in week out on Sky

Can't wait for that, cheers Yaya.

T'wud be great if they continued the theme on through the levels of golf.

    I can see it now........
Follow Parlance as he battles his inner demons trying to make it to 13.
Watch him struggle to cope without the safety net of a shot on 16.
See him sweat as the 0.1s get closer to .5 and an increase.
Follow his journey through 5 different putters and 6 swing changes (per round)

    Good idea Parlance.

"Why does any golfer have a shot - or think they can go for 10 in Carlow" .

    Hi,

I'm afraid that we do not have the rights to show the documentary online.

    Thanks,

    Niall

    Hi Niall,

how does free view work? I have just cancelled my UPC subscription and am getting Sky in, so I presume I will be loosing Setanta Ireland?

is it on the sky platform? or saorview or what?

Correct. Sky customers require a subscription to view Setanta Ireland.

However, some programming (such as "The Long Walk") will be shown as Freeview and therefore available to non subscribers on both UPC & Sky platforms.

so whatever the channel number is on my sky box will just be descrambled for that particular program?

well who enjoyed it? i thought it was pretty good. showed you life is not always so rosey on the pro circuit, bloody tough going.

though i have to think, if you are on the Euro pro tour for 7 years.... why??????? i think after a few years if you can't make it, there aint no way you are going to do any good on the challenge tour, let alone the main event!!

Hard to say, sometimes just getting a win and your card and getting onto the main tour can be enough. You may be a journeyman there, but thats a much better, more sustainable life than a journeyman on the euro pro or lower tours.

I think largely the differences between the two tours are mental, the physical/skill differences wont be as stark/noticeable.

That said I wouldnt much fancy struggling for my card every year...

I actually found it quite sad.
One guy missed making the challenge tour by €28 over the course of the season.

It must be heart breaking for them. Instead of playing for big money we got to see him pull a rented trolley around the course on his own before packing up and heading off in his ford fiesta.

It didn't look like any of them were even able to play the game for the love of it. I'd find it hard not to be bitter about the game if it was me.

yea i spotted that, €28 bloody quid. i'd nearly give it to him myself.

i do know a guy who played for a few years on europro tour (think he might have won it, but certainly came at least 2nd) he hit the challenge tour and that didn't last long though.... it's bloody tough going

Last night was only part 1 of 2 so is imagine they will give a good recap at the start of the second part if you can catch that one.

I'm not sure if it's on next week or sooner.

yea, don't forget to record part 2. that's the problem with Setanta, they don't seem to series link anything

i'm sure it will probably be re-run during the week though

Recorded it on UPC, settled down to watch it and it cut off after 5 mins.

It says it's fully recorded but it's just a black screen.

    Raging

I'm sure it will be on repeat Parlance

Was pretty good. thought Marks story about becoming good buddies with Rocco was a good and funny un. Nice also to see a little bit of sunshine at the end with the little bit about Kevin Phelan

    Hi all,

Delighted to hear such good feedback for the show.

For anyone that missed it, we’ll be repeating both parts back to back Friday the 2nd of May at 10pm on Setanta Ireland.

    Thanks,

    Niall

I would reset your UPC box - happens to me all the time. Try turning off at the power switch for 5 mins then turning back on.

Great show - that Mark Murphy is some character. Amazing how he pretty much changed his life through one bold offer to Rocco Mediate while caddying for him one day as a young lad in Waterville.

Hope he gets somewhere. I'll certainly be keeping an eye out.

    Phelan looks amazing too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭John Divney

Phelan must be struggling, haven't heard anything about him bar a T5 somewhere worth 40k.

He did so well to get the card, hope he settles quickly.

Mark won the Big Break Ireland a good few years ago (maybe 5?) If he was going to bounce on and make something for himself he would have by now. Of course I would love it if he did, but I just can't see it happening.

I think you will be straining your eyes

Murphy is a character I'd say. Even uses yellow golf balls!!

True and comes across as a nice guy but wonder if his problem is consistency as he appears to have a very quick, whippy type swing and not what we've come to expect from professionals. That said his pal Rocco Mediate alluded to his problems being with the short stick and getting it in the hole so could be completely wrong on above observation.

Great job. I had the first one recorded but the Sky box packed up on me last week so it never recorded the second one. But yesterday the nice man came and set up HD for me...so I will now set the box to record the second episode on the repeat. I wonder if Setanta have a HD version? Ah, first world problems :D

The information said it was about Damien McGrane and a couple of other guys. I never saw anything about Damien McGrane in the first one..maybe it's in the second one?

on the plus.... Setanta do have HD... it was on my UPC box, but as I am now with sky, I don't even have Setanta... but scanning through the channels I haven't spotted Setanta HD there.

When it comes to series link, Setant are awful I have never seen one show n Setanta that had Series link on it, so I'm afraid you just have to remember to set each individual recording yourself. :(

Really enjoyed the shows. Thought they gave a great insight to the guys playing at each level and how tough it is.

Agree with stevieob on the series link. Normally on Sat or Sun do a search on golf in the sky planner to set recordings of the shows for week. Always one or two that slip through the net!

Am out for a few jars playing snooker. Praying the UPC recording works this time around.

Recorded both last night when I remembered it, never spotted that Neil had mentioned 10pm (instead of 9pm), sorry bout that folks.

It'd be worth sending Setenta Sports: Niall a PM, he posted on the first page of this thread. He may be able to tell you of any future viewings.

If you're on the look out for good golf docs. They had one called Caddy for Life on last Monday I think.
An excellent watch. They won't be a dry eye in the house.
