TV3 wins rights to 2015 iRB Rugby World Cup

The article is slightly inaccurate - it says TV3 sold games to Setanta in 2007 when in fact it was the opposite way around.

Apparently for the entire tournament. With their very small sports department focused almost exclusively on football where are they going to get the resources to cover it?

400000 unemployed. Im sure there are 10 of them qualified to cover it. Id be more worried about the quality of the picture. It looks like I will have to watch the tournament on UK tv.

Staggered by them winning full rights - I suppose for commentary and the likes they could you the international feed on some matches ... As we said before though, without a HD channel me and an awful lot of others will be watching on ITV.

ITV will likely no longer be an option for cable viewers by the time the tournament comes around though.

Even if it does go off UPC getting FTA satellite for anyone who wants ITVHD is very simple and cheap... i'm not fully convinced UTVNI will come off UPC anyway, they could leave it there to suck even more advertisement revenue from TV3.

I will be watching ITVHD for 2015 rugby world cup as ITV will use BT sport's rugby crew for their coverage

What a waste of money. Anybody with the choice will be watching in ITV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,647 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

ah but dont you know those broadcasters like ITV are not officially licenced to broadcast in Ireland so hence it will only be available exclusively live on TV3:o
I guess probably 5 to 10% of TV3's audience will watch it on UTVHD on Satellite. The rest wont and the new sky boxes cant tune in the new ITV HD frequencies so its most will still watch it on Tv3 despite the reservations of coverage quality etc.

People will watch ITV SD on sky in any case ;)

Hadn't heard that, previous World Cups have seen them borrow some of Sky's team, including Miles Harisson and Stuart Barnes.

I'd love to see the expression on Ryle Nugents face when he learned that RTE had lost out to TV3.

I'd say George Hooks face trumped whatever Nugent did - his last chance to kit out in a ridiculous dickie bow snatched from him like the All Blacks snatching victory from us last November :D

Did TV3 sell setanta rights in 2007 or did Setanta have the rights? I assumed in 2007 and 2011 Setanta had the rights with free to air going to TV3 and RTÉ respectively. ?????

Maybe not from the article anyway, seems as if TV3 went out of their way to secure full rights but you would never know they might invite Setanta to get involved to recoup some expense.

The article is wrong - it was the other way around. Setanta wouldn't have sold the games at all if they hadn't been listed.

I was sure that was the case too - if they were to take on the entire tournament themselves it certainly would be their biggest sporting undertaking in their history.

I wouldn't be confident there will be a TV3 in September 2015. RTE/2RN win in court over the carriage costs and they're a gonner.

TV3 need to seriously up their game for this. Their GAA coverage was brutal, football not much better. HD for the rugby world cup is an absolute must.

Nugent is also head of Sport at RTE, so he would have been doubly displeased.

Forgot about Hook. Didn't he announce that he would be retiring after the World Cup? TV3 could probably hire him if they wanted.

Yeah a real possibility too and they don't seem to be doing themselves any favours in trying to survive ... if anything they are getting worse day after day.

Without HD they will not have many people at all watching unless they have no other possible option to watch it on anything else. Picture quality on TV3 is terrible, a dodgy webstream of a premier league game is clearer.

Yeah their GAA coverage was shocking because of the picture quality. Some of the hurling games were almost unwatchable.

RTE really should have gone all out to get this.

Their soccer coverage is abysmal. Thank God I don't watch rugby.

Oh No! What a disaster! I remember too well the last time they broadcast the Rugby World Cup (What a shambles). How on earth could they be allowed to broadcast the Rugby World Cup after their last attempt at least RTÉ attempt to show all the matches. Having to hear the condescending, arrogant and antagonistic remarks of ITV again

Yes ,he must have had some serious dirt on RTE management to get that role.
I remember him starting out on The Grip years ago ,he was atrocious ,how he has risen through the ranks.

His wikipedia page is very funny
Ryle 'The Ryl Merchant' Nugent is an Irish sports broadcaster, reporter and Head of RTÉ Sport
Nugents commentary was considered by many to have had a negative effect on the karma of the Irish team, who disappointed in a 22-10 defeat to the Welsh. Many Irish Rugby fans publicly blamed Nugent for the defeat on social networking site such as Facebook and Twitter.
Nugent dresses in numerous layers to deliver his commentary, with The Irish Times once encountering him "wrapped in the sort of attire more accustomed to Johnny Fortycoats or an Arctic explorer, and with his sheepskin gloves holding onto his microphone for dear life".[6] His delivery is one of "screeching anticipation" and, even when events are relatively calm, he has been known to "send dogs scurrying for cover".[1] Nugent prepares for this delivery by arriving at the match ground two hours before kick-off to perform a sound check.[5] He typically engages in conversation with the team doctor or other members of the backroom staff to ensure there is nothing new he has not been familiarised with regarding the players.

For anyone who has no option but to use Cable for their tv, I feel sorry for them if UTV NI is gone by then, by the way, is UTV NI currently in HD on UPC ? Thank God for Freesat and ITV HD. If TV3 isn't in HD by then, it will be a disgrace. In this day and age, any major world sporting event should be in HD. Irish advertisers can kiss goodbye to thousands of viewers if TV3 isn't in HD by then.

TV3 broadcasting the Rugby World Cup in 2015 (SD or HD) will deprive viewers of an Irish perspective of the tournament

Do they have every game or just a handful like RTE did in 2011? I just hope Matt Cooper or Vincent Brown don't front the coverage.

RTE didn't attempt to show all matches in 2011. They only had the same rights that TV3 had in 2007 - first game, all of Ireland's games, 2 quarters, 2 semis and the final. Setanta had the rest.

If TV3 does not go into HD in 2015, it will be a disgrace as their sports coverage is extremely poor and I will switch over to ITV HD instead for a better picture.

Did they still pay €3 million for these same rights as I heard last time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭bjp1967

Surely TV3 will have to provide certain criteria to obtain rights, such as provide HD coverage (it is 2015 not 2007) etc. or is just all about the money!!!

Answered your own question. I'm not particularly worried about HD if they can offer something fresh in their coverage. But they won't. I wouldn't be very surprised if matt cooper and/or martin king make an appearance.

TV3, as the broadcaster with the most advanced HD infrastructure in Ireland, is currently in discussion with platform operators to carry TV3 HD from mid-2015.

I do despair at their constant boasting about their HD capabilities when they have done absolutely nothing to show it off. This also reads to me as TV3 HD will make an appearance on pay tv only. No real loss anyway as ITV HD is FTA

They say they are in negotiation with the platforms for carriage of HD. There is no discussions with 2rn - the charges are laid out, as a result of TV3's previous rant and the matter is now closed. They are paying more for the RWC rights than it would cost to go HD on Saorview (by many times). To go HD will cost a little over €1m per year and closing 3e would save them this amount.

I find it hard to take seriously anything from TV3. Last night VB was running a poll on 'Do you think RTE should get a €200 million subsidy from the taxpayer' or something like that. No mention of the bail-out afforded to TV3, nor any mention of the buy-back at a discount of their other debts to the state. Polls are not supposed to ask the question in a way to get the desired answer. Questions should always be neutral, but then no-one would take such a poll seriously anyway. SIZE=1]Do TV3 make anything from these polls?[/SIZE

In the programme, VB was rightly sat on his arse by John Bowman who out-performed him at every point, and showed him up for the biased, small minded, one trick pony he is. He was on a full-out attack on RTE, ranting on about their lack of balance. Talk about trying to re-write history to suit your arguement, but John Bowman was having none of it.

And TV3 boast about their HD capability being the best in Ireland, yet broadcast none of it yet RTE have two HD channels on air!

Says it all really announced by tv3 under expose entertainment news!! And strikingly it says iIrish and later stages FTA and maybe sublicence other matches.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Well the Irish games are listed, so they must be shown free to air, but yeah "manage the broadcast" is an odd turn of phrase, basically implying they won't necessarily show the lot themselves.

Meanwhile they say they'll have a TV3 HD channel up and running next year, though presumably not of 3e.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 20,151 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

TV3 Group Director of Broadcasting, Niall Cogley said: “If Ireland can beat Canada, Romania and Italy in the opening games, we'll play France in Cardiff on October 11th for the privilege of avoiding New Zealand in the quarter-final. With Joe Schmidt's now legendary attention to detail, we like to imagine that Ireland's first ever involvement in a Rugby World Cup semi-final is a real possibility next year.
“TV3’s recent investment in one of the most advanced HD Studios in these islands and the replacement of core technology will allow TV3 to show the World Cup at its best. Over the coming year we will build the best rugby broadcast team to delight our viewers.”
Detailed plans for TV3’s coverage are now advancing. It is expected that the broadcaster will broadcast about 20 matches on TV3 and the remainder on 3e although TV3 has not ruled out some sub-licenses to other Irish broadcasters. Announcements regarding Studio, Commentary and Touchline broadcast teams will be made in due course. TV3 also confirms it is in discussions with respective platforms regarding the launch of TV3 HD in the first half of 2015.
I think that is what this says - from the above article.
