Love Pizza - but not as a take away/delivery - what says you???

so a discussion being had -

i love pizza, but i would never order it as a take away/delivery..
IMO - pizza must be eaten within minutes of leaving the oven..

And as takeaway/delivery - the pizza looses its freshness/crispness due to the condensation created in an enclosed box..

the other say they do not care - would eat pizza either way..

but if i am gonna eat pizza - i want it to be good and worth the money..

    what are your thoughts?

Depends, are you talking about proper restaurant pizza freshly made vs say Dominos or are you talking about disgusting Goodfellas frozen cheap ass pizza vs Dominos. Frozen stuff is rank imo, Dominos or Pizzahut is nice is you live within 10 minutes of one any longer and it loses the taste.

ok i am talking about my fav pizza eat in versus take away…

eg i live in cork - i love novecento pizza - but i would prefer to have it sit in as oppose to takeaway/delivered.. get me?

good point - must compare like with like..

I appreciate pizza in all its temperatures and ages. Decent pizza still bubbling from the stone oven = yum. That same pizza a bit later when it's chewy = yum. Same pizza stone cold for breakfast the next morning when it's solidified into a chewy brick = yum. I'm planning on making pizza tonight for dinner and a pizza pocket to bring with me on a hike tomorrow to make everyone else sad about their egg sandwiches.

Dominos for dinner & again for breakfast, yes, thanks.

Frozen pizza - not tasty enough to be worth the calories in any state.

I personally find the amount of grease in chain take away pizza places disgusting. Like there is mini pools of grease on them. Plus most of the toppings are vile.

I however love, love, love the fresh thin crust pizzas from Lidl for €3,99. They are the closest things to real pizzas in a supermarket.

Do Apache make their pizza out of styrofoam or something?

I didn't think pizza snobs were a thing.

I tried their pizzas three times and found them to be really bland.

I get dougfh and sauce in Iago, put the rolled out dough in a heated frying pan (dry pan), put the sauce and stuff on and then after a few minutes I put the the lot (pan and all) in the oven. Savage. Cooking it on the hob first makes the base firm up and you end up with an evenly cooked pizza. Even using Lidl/Aldi ham and Lidl/aldi cheese it does the job.

I find that once the sauce is good then the rest doesn't matter.

I think the chicago town takeaway pizzas are on a par with the junkmail takeaway pizza places.

Most people tend to overcook frozen pizza, the times recommended mean it usually comes out far more well done than pizza places do it, loads of people end up with a rock hard base, not the floppiness you get in takeaways.

Goodfellas takeaway range it not great.

I'd agree about Chicago town pizza's, almost as good as what you'd get in the majority of takeaway places.

Speaking of Cork as some of ye are, the best pizza I can remember getting in Ireland was in Luciano's on the grand parade , since renamed a couple of times, is it still the same pizza (this was over 10 years ago).
I've not been to Naples but for me the best pizza's are to be found in neighbourhood joints all over New York.

i don't actually like my pizza floppy - i like it firm - but not over cooked! The cheese for me should be just starting to brown around the edges

The pizzas from Paulies Pizza in Grand Canal, Dublin are the best pizzas in Dublin as far as I'm concerned so for any pizza aficionados who have not been I would heartily recommend a visit. I'm salivating just thinking about one. It's run by the same guys who own Juniors so the grub is top quality.

Goodfellas used to be one of the best, but it went to **** in the last few years. Had one last night and I had to add loads of things to it to make seem like a decent pizza. It used to be my favourite but now it just seems crap.

I examine the ingredients lists to see what % of meats are on them. In tesco you can see the meat on some of the fresh ones, if you flick through them you can spot the odd one with more than the rest.

I was eating these cheapo tesco ones a while back and liked them

    http://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=277942532

    only €1.31

345G Pepperoni (8%) ,Mini Pepperoni (4%), so that is 12% meat or 41.4grams. You'd be lucky to get the pepperoni for €1.31!

Buy a pizza base in Superquinn/Supervalur for €1 and add as many toppings as you like :) delicious!

I live 5 mins away from that place but I've never been. It always looks packed, do you need to book in advance?

Hmmm, might get a takeaway some night this week... :)

You can only book ON the day you want to eat and only after 4pm so I usually sit there in suspended animation with dribble down my chin from about ten to! They've extended the place and have a floor upstairs now so there's a lot more room. I can honestly say you'll be hard pushed to find a better pizza anywhere in Dublin, LOVE the place! Yes, would definitely advise booking but you can also pick up to take away.

Yes, they are around the corner from one another. Juniors is on Bath Avenue and Paulies around the corner on Grand Canal Street.

Thanks to the cooking club forum, I love making my own pizzas. However, as l have figured out, I appear to have bought the world's slowest acting yeast. Therefore, home made pizzas take anything from 1-4 hours to make. Not good after a long week when you want to kick back with a few beers. So I do order the occasional Domino's when I am feeling lazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,230 ✭✭✭Merkin

What yeast are you using Tom? This happened me once before and it turns out the yeast was simply stale. I use the Tesco sachets and find them very good.

Ah, you know what? That could be it. I'm living abroad, so it's some mad French brand.

l probably bought it a year ago!

We occasionally order pizza from an Italian restaurant and it's perfect when it arrives. It's even better then next morning crisped up in the oven. It's definitely good, and definitely worth the money!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,230 ✭✭✭Merkin

Oh definitely! Just get some fresh stuff and you'll no longer have that tortuous wait for scrummy pizza! :D

    My pizza rankings

    1. Double pepperoni from independent pizza, drumcondra.

    2. Everything else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

Tesco do a pizza base mix with yeast already in it
    http://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=265869171

You can get big bags of yeast in asian supermarkets and I hear in some east european shops, far cheaper than the sachets.

well - you live and learn..

not only did i have great delivered pizza last night but i am so happy to discover that decent pizza does indeed exist in cork!

last night we had novocento pizza delivered…

the pizza was sublime and all of us lovvvvvved it…

light crisp at the edge.. the sauce was delicious and the toppings were quality..

and the delivery service was great - and it was still hot when it arrived..

    and it was v reasonable..

    22e for 2 12 inch = 2 toppings on both… and that inc. delivery

Pizza base from tesco is a good shout, can buy toppings there then. Although I don't mind take away pizza.:P

I hate the Tesco pizza bases! So bland!

OP I love every type of pizza. Homemade, take away, frozen, gourmet/restaurant... it's all good to me. Don't think I've ever had a bad pizza and if I did I enjoyed it somewhat anyways! I like pizza way too much. I don't know why it's so good, it's such a basic recipe (bread + sauce + cheese!)!

Luckily, I live 30 seconds walk around the corner from Irelands best Pizza. Pizza 'n Cream in Bray.

That said, I'll happily munch on a FourStar too. Apache and Domino's less so. Don't recall trying others. Actually not a fan of genuine Italian pizza. Don't like the biscuit bases and paltry amounts of Mozzarella and toppings.

Going to try my first homemades in the next few weeks. I'll be aiming to replicate Pizza 'n Cream as much as possible.

If you're thirty seconds from pizza and cream, you couldn't be more than two minutes from Platform! Great addition to Bray! (I know you said you don't like a thinner base, but Pizza and Cream is just too doughy for me. I love eating the toppings, but the bread fills me up too quick! Their garlic bread will always remind me of childhood though!)

I've eaten in Paulies pizza- it was one of the saltiest meals I've ever had. Didn't enjoy it at all and I had been looking forward to it based on the reviews. Decided to give it another bash as everyone was raving about the place. Rang for a collection at 7pm on a Friday and was told they had no pizza dough left. Won't bother again...

Haven't tried platform but my brother did. He said he couldn't understand the rave reviews himself. We rate P'nC, Campo, Four-star and apache in the same order (Obviously a big quality gap between the first two and the second two) so I trust our tastes are similar and our opinion would likely be the same. That said, if the gang said they were going to platform I wouldn't say no but I don't imagine going out of my way to try them.

maybe a silly question but could one order a pizza made up but collect it uncooked so one could cook it in one's own over?

They usually are using high temp pizza ovens, so it might not come out nearly as good at home.

    This one says 350C

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Commercial-Electric-Pizza-Oven-Firestone/dp/B0040XYF4A/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1399913649&sr=8-4&keywords=pizza+oven

I have seen others past 500C, this is why they cook in just a few minutes.

You can get a pizza stone that goes in the oven and preheats, this sort of acts like a battery saving up heat, so when the pizza is put on top it does not cool down. Think of the difference of standing on a piece of aluminium foil out of the oven and a thick slab of aluminium at the same temp.

I have done them in my philips airfryer in a matter of minutes, but the airflow can blow the toppings around.

Despite living in Bray, I'm having trouble visualizing where Platform is exactly .. in fact, I'd never even heard of it until I read this post, so it must be well hidden. Their location map isn't working on their website, and given the address of 7 Strand Road I'd imagine it's somewhere around Katie Gallaghers or whatever it's called these days, but I'm struggling to see where they could have fitted a place in like this without me spotting it.

if you like meat you can try "meatza" where the base is minced meat. I like thin bases so was using wraps, usually cheaper than bare pizza bases too, per kilo.

Cheap delicious Pizza (a bit Indian !)

Base is Plain Naan Bread from Aldi @ 79c for 2

Tomato base homemade - 6 x Tomatoes (chopped), carton Passata, Salt and Pepper (to taste), Basil leaves, if you like a tablespoon of sugar, 1 x finely chopped red onion, 1 x tablespoon of Balsamic vinegar (to taste), half tube of tomato puree (this will make up far more sauce than you'll need but can be frozen or used in Spag Bol/Lasagne etc) - all into a saucepan and simmer for 20 minutes

Bag grated Mozzerella from Aldi @ 1.69 (enough to do three naan pizzas)

Better to make your sauce maybe the day before and let the flavours "marry" sauce is good in the fridge for 5 days ime

Fan oven to 200c, take out your naan bread, spread your tomato sauce on the "flat" side of the naan, spread your cheese (and other toppings if you fancy) and slot it into the hot oven stright onto the oven shelf for 10 minutes.

Fresh basil leaves on top and sit down, put your feet up and leave it for at least 5 minutes after the oven as the sauce will be very hot underneath the cheese. Very delicious.

I've done that aswell Vic. But instead of tomato sauce I'd use a dizzle of chilli sauce (Goose brand sriracha from one of the Asian shops). So if peeps like it hot that's an idea aswell.
