Not yet, looks like it could be another week or two. Growth hasnt been great up to now so I dont think ive lost out by much yet

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,410 ✭✭✭bbam

Just last week. Was lightly grazed up to that to clean it up.
Have 18-6-12 coming next week for it. Not any way near fit for slurry.

Has to be sprayed for docks at some stage too.

so you will apply 4 different stages of fert - is that all before the first cut?

Got 4000 gallons of slurry/acre yesterday, 50/50 mixture of cattle and pig. Ground too wet to go with a Fert. spreader yet. As soon as dry enough to carry me, will go with a bag and 3/4 of urea.

Around 10 percent closed. Everything getting covered with urea today. Closed ground getting a bag of super net 14 S plus 2x 10-10-20 on top of 1 bag urea. Everything will get super net next week as well. As surpluses appear will close more.

won't be closing for a while yet, too heavily stocked

not too worried 'cos IMO silage will never replace grass , for feed value

have a good bit left in any case , so most likely only take 1 cut and a few bales

Very very low in p and want to get it up.
Will cist for a year or two but I will have 2 good crops if silage I hope

Can you spread fert on those turlochs in the summer or do you just eat what comes ? Do they flood every year

When is it too late to put out slurry? I'm hoping to go out on sat with the rest of the slurry, I've one silage paddock just grazed out, and the other has a cover of about 800 on it, both of them will get the slurry. Another 10acres of silage ground has a cover of about 1400 on it now, should I be aiming to cut this earlier, for some quality silage for the milkers, and cut the rest later?

Reseeded silage ground got 18-6-12 yesterday and will be getting gran lime today. Hoping to take 150 bales off it in 2 cuts for feeding to weanlings. The rest of the silage ground has been grazed by the sheep all winter and I'm hoping to get slurry on it in the next 2 weeks to allow for mid june cutting. Quality doesn't need to be near as good as it's only for the suckler cows.

Super Net 14S, is that Nitrogen with Sulphur?

Closing Ground Saturday, just grazing it off at the moment.
Will put out 2 Bags of 10.10.20 followed by Nitrogen in mid May

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,556 ✭✭✭visatorro

suppose you can spread slurry anytime if it gets abit of rain and growth its alright i would have thought. watery enough stuff helps.

how do you calculate nitrogen usage? as in how long does it take the ground to use it up? should it be zero at cutting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,081 ✭✭✭td5man

Very very low in p and want to get it up.

my silage ground was low in p made a huge difference spreading straight p on it.

    finished grazing silage ground tomorrow.

What would you expect the quality of it to be like, ie stuff held over winter, instead of grazed once before being cut? I assume you'll go straight in for a 2nd cut in mid June now?

They were very hard pellets no dust off it like you would normally get spreading 10-10-20 or 18-6-12

€180 per ton for growmax is what we paid. You can get ordinary granlime for €160. It comes in bulk bags, 375kg per bag and 4 bags per 1.5 ton pallet.

Cheers for that. Never used it before. I'll take it that it doesn't come in the 50kg bags so

Yea, a higher calcium content in the growmax!.

We are actually spreading only 2/3 the amount of fertilizer this year and spending the other 1/3 on growmax. It's the advice that we got at the BTAP meetings. Don't know if it will ring through or not, but the idea is that the granlime will help us to utilise more of the nitrogen that is in the fertilizer and slurry as well as utilising more of the nitrogen already in the ground. Advisor recons that we will see a better and more sustained grass growth. He could be wrong and we might see ourselves having to buy more fertilizer at the back end. But it's worth the risk.

Plan on spreading ground limestone at the back end too but heavy land can't take too much lime and it's hard to get a contractor to spread less than 2 tons per acre when 1 ton per acre on a regular basis would be more suited to the type of land that we have.

Yeah we have heavy soils here with limestone underneath

All silage ground grazed since last weekend, OH spent yesterday and today spreading slurry on it, nice mist here now so hopefully it will wash in nicely. Will go with Cut Sward +S next week. Hope to cut for pit mid June and will take bales if paddocks get too strong later on. All ground got lime late September.

Have 35 acres closed off and spread pig slurry on it 2 weeks ago, going to close off another 25 acres next week just to space out the first cuts and hope for good weather . Hopefully make a bit of hay/silage and sell it aswell

Well I'll try to do the figures so feel free to correct me if I've done it wrong.

    First cut needs 100 - 12 - 100 (N-P-K) according to Teagasc and slurry is meant to be 6 - 5 - 30 per 1000 gallons so you put out around 21 - 17.5 - 105 so far. Cut sward is 24 - 2.5 - 10 so @ 2.5 bags you'd be putting out something like 60 - 6.25 - 25. Including the slurry it's 81 - 23.75 - 130.

Silage ground grazed upto 1 st nov last yr.... Slurry the week before paddys day.... Fertiliser (cut Sward) spread the days after paddy's day.... Job done!

Teagasc recommend 150units for 2cuts so 100units for 1st would be about right. Sounds a little high suppose it depends on your ground.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 533 ✭✭✭towzer2010

    reps4 wrote: »

Well it is a lot but according to Teagsc it's needed because the crop removes that from the field. It's from a leaflet I got at a BTAP meeting and this is what it says

"Teagasc advice for first cut silage is to apply 100 units of N, 16 units of P and 100 units of K.
Apply additional P and K in fields with low soil fertility (Index 1 and 2).

Advice for second cut silage is 80 units of N, 8 units of P and 28 units of K."

I think there may be a slight mix up with units and kgs.
