Scratch Map Etiquette

So a friend bought me one of those Scratch Maps a couple of years ago. For those who don't know, it's a map of the world with a coating similar to those on Lotto scratch cards. When you've been to a particular place, you scratch if off on the map. It's a different way of keeping track of where you've been.

Now, I always thought that the idea was that you'd limit yourself to scratching where you'd actually been in a country. So, for example, I've been to Italy but never south of Rome, so I've only scratched Northern Italy. Been to America, but only New England, so only scratched that part etc.

Another friend has a completely different approach. She's been to New York only, and has scratched the entire US. She's been to Delhi, and scratched the entire sub-continent.

So, AH, which of us is correct in our approach? What would your scratch etiquette be, or if you have a Map, what is it?

If the highlight of a holiday is getting to scratch a map when you get home you need to rethink your life.

If you don't win anything for scratching off the whole thing first, who cares?

When she travelled to Cork did she scratch off all of Ireland?

I would go with your approach. Herself scratching all of the US or India is her trying to make herself believe she's actually been to India or America when in reality she has been just New York and Delhi!

I was in Helsinki, Finland but I tell people I was only in Helsinki, I don't tell them I was in Finland (unless they dont know where it is!). Otherwise I'd come across as gloating in my opinion anyways!

I'd just scratch that particular city!

I hope you spat you tea out in disgust at this particular scratch map etiquette. I've never seen such disgraceful scratch map etiquette in my life.

You see, I knew there'd be a sneery post like this in response.

The thing is, nothing in my post even remotely suggested that the map is in anyway a highlight, so maybe you should read a post before you try to reply in such a condescending manner.

I did indeed. And then hers fell off the wall. Which I take as a sign from God that I'm in the right. He does work in mysterious ways afterall.

    Ah yes.

    Have I been to America?

    I'm not sure.

I had better consult my scratch map!

    Seriously?

Seriously, the number of posers in AH grows by the day, and they become increasingly irritating to boot. A scratch map is simply a memento of one's travels- it's the same as collecting key rings from countries, or coins, or collecting fridge magnets from the cities you visit. It isn't about showing off; it certainly isn't the entire point of traveling in the first place- it's just something that people like to have/do.

But that's not enough for AH's posers, those amongst us who like to swan about and act all superior. They have to invent motivations and reasons that aren't there, and all so they can rebel against some non-existent conformity. It's pretty sad. They remind me of those hipsters lampooned by "The Dickhead Song". Seriously, no need to be a dickhead about such things. No need for it at all. It doesn't make you superior, doesn't make more of an individual or whatever you're having yourself. So to those who like to impugn, and make insinuations, why not stop being dickheads, stop ruining threads, and try to respond in something approaching a genuine manner?

TBF, once you've seen Cork you don't really need to see the rest of the island, t'would only be a let down. :P

I'm going on one in THREE weeks. WHOO! First one in 5 years :):):)

Einhard, your friend is cheating I think. Not sure what the etiquette is.
I'd probably prefer a map and sticking little pins into where I've been in the world.

I have a map on my wall with little pins in it of all the places I travelled to.

I had to travel to the top two corners of the World first so that it wouldn't fall down.

How could you lower yourself to be friends with someone who hasn't been to scratch map finishing school??

Alaska and Hawaii too? That's serious cheating

You should scratch North Korea off her map then demand she goes there, that'll teach her.
