so I would take whey every evening and train every second evening. now I haven't been to the gym with a week due to work and assignments. if there is a period (lets say a week) when I don't make it to the gym should I continue the whey each evening or is it a waste.

would be only skipping a week maybe once every 3 months at most.

if it fits into your calorie intake/macros for non-workout days, then yes.
don't think of it as a workout aid, but more as an additional source of protein.

It's just a protein supplement. Not magical muscle powder.

Nothing will happen if you don't take it over the course of a week except your whey will last longer.

It's food, so if it fits your macros, it's fine.

If its on top of of maintenance calories, and protein targets for the day have been met, it's unnecessary extra calories

its like saying, should I only eat meat on the days I go to the gym?

If he is trying to gain muscle, he should be eating past maintenance, so wouldn't be unnecessary.

The point is that he should be taking in enough protein even on days when he doesn't work out.

Most people who work out their macros need to supplement with protein shakes to hit that. At least I do. I could easily spend an extra hundred euro a month on meat if I didn't.

IF that's the goal, then yes.

But you know that I know that.

To clarify, what I had meant was that it isn't whey that's the key. Just getting enough protein.

I don't agree that you necessarily need to supplement with whey if you work out though.

I know you do, but was pointing it out for the benefit of others - who aren't sure when to take whey for example
