People only think that because they're used to it. How is it better than Windows 7?

The same people that burst into tears at the sight of the Windows 8 metro screen rather than actually take a few minutes to figure it out or install a classic shell if they want to stick with the XP/W7 interface.

I followed the advice of Dravokivich and this is the message I got. It makes no difference to me as long as my computer works.

We are going to have major issues with the death of xp.

It seems their certificates are no longer valid and we are not able to send and receive credit card data, but the xp machines are using some very specific expensive software that we can't afford to update so it is going to be new machines and kv switches.

Ah the Windows XP. So many hours spent downloading music illegally on websites that aren't even live any more.

It's not even obsolete. The problem they have with XP is the huge amount of pirated copies of it that were used by people.

Windows 7 all the way. Win 8 was crap and 8.1 is only slightly better. And I speak from experience. There's nothing wrong with Win 8/8.1 in standard mode running normal programs, but that app crap is useless. A PC is not a feckin' tablet/phone!

I remember when I got my Windows 8 laptop around this time last year actually I hated the whole interface, looked far too 'iPaddy' (:P) for my liking but every time I have to use Windows 7 it's very frustrating to use now.

People get very used to there comfort zones.
I hate windows 8 because I wasnt able to figure out how to do something the one and only time I used it. If my own laptop was win 8/8.1 I'm sure I would become accustomed to it very quickly.

XP was only really decent after SP2, that came around 2004/2005? It was awful before that, definitely not one of the best. It's just been going for so long people have got used to it. 7 and 8 are both very decent :)

There's more to an operating system than the interface. Windows 8 can easily customized to mimic the Window 7 or XP menu. I hardly go near the Apps tile on my version of 8.1.

With 8, Microsioft made the mistake of underestimating how non-proactive a lot of their users are as the mass hysteria about easily bypassed Applications screen re4adily proved.

This means nothing until we know of the dependencies that would require XP.

Taxpayers would like it less to have their details on a less secure system, I assume.

Windows 7 is better than XP and Windows 8.1 is better than Windows 7 if you take one minute out of your life and install Classic Shell. I dont honestly understand why people are still clinging onto XP as if its the best OS ever released. Its a fine OS, but its dated and its time it died off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,749 ✭✭✭✭wes

Moved the last one or 2 VMs and machines off XP at work. Left 1 VM around in case its needed for some interop stuff. Honestly glad to see the back of it. While XP was a great OS in its day, its time is done.

Some people still use CRT TVs.

But sure, LED looks so spiffingly fantastic. Can't believe people out there refuse to move on from it, seriously CRT was fine at the time, but it's old and dated!

Its because people are afraid of change, especially when it comes to computers. But there's nothing at all to be afraid of in Windows 7 or 8. Times move on, I wish people would too!

Windows 98 was my favourite , it had the best desktop themes, skipped xp to vista and 7.

The Internet has changed. One time this thread would have been filled with nerds recommending you move to Linux as it gave you the freedom to spend more time using your computer. Mostly on telling people to move to Linux it always appeared. It would then turn into a debate amongst various neckbeards as to which version of Linux to use.

It's not really RIP, they are just stopping support of it.

I still use XP on some computers and will continue to do so, great OS!

I bought a laptop with Vista on it and the clever techie people were horrified, it was the devils own spawn apparently. Used it for three years with no problems at all.

I still have some "Y2K Solutions" business cards knocking about. I might be able to recycle them as "XP Solutions" and pocket a few shillings.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Lol whole of AIB is running on XP because the clown Duffy hasn't invested in upgrading the systems. Obviously trying to make himself look good with his aggressive cost cutting but not investing in new systems is only going to come back to haunt them im afraid.

No, it is obsolete. It's too insecure without massive maintenance being done to keep it above water. The codebase is 13 years old - for perspective, did you think Windows 95 made it to 2008? The computing world has simply moved on.

    'Good' Windows versions alternate.

    Windows 2000 (Good)
    Windows ME (Bad)
    Windows XP SP2 (Good)
    Windows Vista (Bad)
    Windows 7 (Good)
    Windows 8 (Bad)

Should be made a universal law at this stage. The mistakes they made with 8 will be fixed with 9.

To celebrate the lack of next months "patch Tuesday", I'd say there'll be a couple of 0-day exploits revealed.
