Now, generally we get on well with the neighbours. The family on one side of us are from a different country and they wouldn't have the best English but they're friendly. They've borrowed cups of sugar off us and us off them in the past. Maybe not "a cup of sugar" but like a phone charger or a bit of a loaf of bread and the like.

So, the neighbours asked meself and herself to keep an eye on their dog and water their plants while they went off for the week, I think they were heading home for a bit. I can't be certain though but I don't speak their language very well. We said we would, no bother, and they showed us where they left the dog food. They also asked us to put the lights on in the front room at night so it'd look like someone was home, you know yourself. I'm nearly sure that's what they wanted anyway.

Then the day that we thought they were meant to be back came. And went. Eh, okay, maybe we'd got it wrong and they meant they'd be gone for two weeks, people go away for two weeks, right? We'd fed the dog all of the dogfood but sure we must've been giving him too much. So we bought some more dog food and fed him a bit less the next week.

Then the day that we thought they were meant to be back came. And went. No, I didn't post that twice by mistake, after the two weeks they still didn't come home. I'm fairly sure that they didn't leave enough dog food for three weeks. They have one of those meters that you put a card in for the electric and it's run out too. The plants look okay but sure gardening wouldn't be my kind of thing at all so I don't know. (It's a tomato plant btw.)

I was hoping the sensible, level-headed AH crowd would know what to do. So at what point do we report these people as missing? A month? 6 weeks? Do we have a dog now? We don't want a dog but if we get the dog a new home they'll probably be back the next day asking us where their dog is (however you say that in their language.)

Did the neighbours give you any phone number or contact details or are you friends with them on facebook?

Probably the free dog that you didn't want.

Did they not leave any contact details at all?

You have a dog and a second house now.

Who's walking the dog and cleaning up after it?

Sorry I probably should've said, we do have a mobile number and we rang that but it rang out. One day herself rang it when she was in the house and heard it ring. So they've obviously left that phone behind. We're not friends with them on Facebook. Neither herself or meself do much facebooking and it never even occured to me to ask them if they're on Facebook themselves.

Renting out the gaff made me laugh now :P. But they've locked the kitchen door so we couldn't get into the rest of the house. We'd have to change the locks. Not a bad idea though. For rent - 3 bed house, fully furnished, free dog.

Search the house for any documentation belonging to them. I assume they are renting, look for any info on the landlord or if it's a council house, contact the council.

No "normal" person fcuks off for a few weeks leaving total trust in a loosely familiar neighbour.

Are there any personal belongings....apart from the dog? Is there anything in the house that they would/should come back for?

Check the normal "hideyhole" places for money/drugs. It's a possibility you are being set up for a fall. Your prints are all over the house now. "I was just mindin' de dog occifer" doesn't wash! :)

Info AGS, they *may* be familiar with the people, if you find anything with their name etc on it, they can dig deeper if needed.

If you do nothing else, at least look after the dog best you can.

The dog says a feckin' lot alright but no, we can't understand any of it!

The missus cleans up after the dog. I don't know how many times she's picked up his sh*t off the floor and I don't really want to ask her right now because I'd say the answer would be a long one! We're not walking the dog but they don't walk him either. I've never seen any of them walk him anyway. He has the run of a nice big garden.

Mr. Pants, we can't get into the house to search it, we'd have to knock the door down. I don't know if they're gone long enough for us to be breaking stuff. Maybe in their culture it is normal to take yerself off for a few weeks and they could be back soon, looking at us as if we were the mad ones.

Having a bunch of Basta keys, numbered 1-16 in the man press always comes in handy for getting into the neighbors locked rooms.

Honestly, I'd probably ring the good old gardai. See what they say. They're usually a fairly cliver bunch to deal with. If nothing else, something needs to be done about the dog.

Your probably looking after a grow house for them!

14 weeks for the plants to grow and then its killing time. They'll probably be back in 11 weeks.

That's about the best idea , every time I report someone missing they turn up shortly afterwards.

The mobile being left behind is quite odd too. I presume it's plugged in, as surely it would have died by now.

Does anyone else on the road know them?

It could be a samsung builders phone, they have big battery life.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭Pumpkinseeds

I think you need to call the guards. They asked you to take care of the dog and left a week or so worth of dog food. It's very odd that the rest of the house is locked up and the number they left you is not being answered. If they're gone 6 weeks the odds are that they aren't coming back.

If they were doing a runner from something and anyone came asking about them a neighbour looking after the dog and watering plants gives the impression that they're coming back. Sounds very iffy to me tbh OP.

If you don't feed their dog, water their plants, pay for more electricity and look after their house OP then you are clearly a racist.

Dogs name is Burek. We could put up posters but sure I don't see how that would work unless they were in the local area somewhere? And if they were surely they'd be at home?

I'd say the phone must be plugged in, maybe they meant to take it so charged it up then forgot about it. I've done that meself but I've never been gone for weeks after doing it so I don't know.

michael999999, 11 more weeks?! I hope feckin' not.

We could go through the phone or the post but we'd have to break doors. I wasn't sure they'd been gone long enough for that. It's not been 6 weeks, we're into week three now.

Thanks for all the suggestions, we're not topping up the electricity :o.

This is creeping me out. What if they have traps laid out throughout the house like in saw???

For example, Larry Murphy waiting to put you in a bathtub full of petroleum fully submerged with a breathing tube, the petrol is alight but only the top of it burns but eventually it will burn away, what do you do, stay in and burn to death or jump out and burn but maybe save yourself somehow, live or die, your choice OP.

    Either way your f**ked

Back door access to kitchen which has the internal door locked I would guess

How do u turn on the lights if the doors are all locked ?

But it sounds to me like they are gone and figured you were a decent couple to keep their dog. They probably loved the dog
and figured he was worth a bag of dog food to get a decent owner.
