How much does your car cost you every month?

Factoring in insurance, fuel, tax, NCT, bringing it to the garage, etc etc.....

You can give an annual figure in order to factor in NCT tax and fixing etc... if you want.

And.... do you think it's worth it?

    (I don't have a car.)

About €300 (taking into account depreciation it would be a little higher).

Can Jeep and Van owners offer their input?

I'd probably be shocked if I added it all up.

I've three cars, but only counted one. The other two, probably €1000 a year.

Splitting service cost, insurance etc. across 12 months, I'd say 350-400.
The variation depends on petrol costs from being abroad and thus, not needing to drive as much.
The number also includes the car finance.

Is it worth it? For my set of circumstances, definitely.

My petrol astra averages €250pm, the wife's diesel astra about €200. That's tax, test and insurance along with maintenance and fuel.

€140 - yes absolutely worth it. If you mix borderline agoraphobia and public transport you're gonna have a bad time.

    Car costs - loads.

not having to rely on or use public transport - priceless.

    (I don't have a car.)

    Car #1:

    Insurance: €18 per month (€216 p/a)

Fuel: €140 per month, give or take (€35 a week usually does, fills the tank nearly)

    Tax: €56 for 12 months

    NCT: exempt from NCT

Bringing it to a garage: I can fix everything by the road, with a very basic tool kit, so €0

Total per month: Insurance + fuel = €158. Thats providing I don't need to buy any bits.

I have an 8km round trip to work. Rest of the fuel is taken up with recreational drives every week.
Usually put $20-$30 a week in to the car, topped up the monthly usage to cover the occasional big trips I do. Last weekend was 300km drive for fun one day.

Going by this thread anyone in the: car wash, panal beating, tyre selling, car valeting, dent-a-fix, driving school, car recovery, car accessories-light bulbs-antifreeze-fuses -wiper rubbers etc, will have to shut up shop in the morning

Also nobody has ever had to pay a fine, a toll, or a parking ticket. All that stuff is just for the muppits outthere.

I don't really know. I just fill it up when needs be, tax it when it's out. I don't calculate how much these things cost.

I wash my car myself, I wouldn't trust another person or machine to do it.
Never crashed, never needed a panel beater. My car is nearly 50 years old anyway, so I wouldn't bother with panel beaters.
My insurance covers me for recovery.
I have mentioned buying parts already in my post.

    I park legally, I don't get tickets.
I don't take it onto motorways, no tolls.

Well, you know the part above where you said you wouldn't trust a machine or someone else to wash an old car.
That where you became Mr. Bean to me.

Went for lunch this afternoon. Just came back with $65 parking fine.

I'll be politically correct on this one :D. I have 4 coffee jars aside... one for 3 months tax, one for insurance, one for yearly-NCT, and one for petrol, and one spare jar for the odd few fivers and change incase the car needs a fix.

I'd have to pull all the super-glued jars apart (except for the petrol one) to see how much is there all-told, but it is indeed a handy way to have everything in order.

The car gets it's service once a year, so the leftover cash covers that.

Yes there are five jars if anyone asks, but the fifth jar is just a floater.

Mine cost me about €3500 for the year.

Mine was costing me too much in tax/insurance/NCT/maintenance just to sit there and be available for the weeks when I'm home. Had to sell it and will be renting instead when needed :(

Trust me, when you realise how expensive the tiniest piece of chrome trim is, the piece that has just been ripped off by the carwash, you, you realise its not worth the hassle. And as you can see, I have a lot of expensive little bits.

I'd say €200 a month. Worth every red cent for the control and independence it gives me. Would still be worth it if I paid triple that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭truedoom

    Price per year

    tax is €413
    nct is €55
    insurance €630
    petrol €1200
    tyres €270
    misc €10
    yearly service €60

    That comes to

€2638 a year, divided by 12 is €220 ish euro.

Is it worth it? I have the freedom to go anywhere, at any time i want with a car. No waiting around for a bus, not walking in the pissing rain or cold. I can help people move, give them lifts if they're stuck, and i learn a lot by doing my own repairs on it (and knowledge is power!)

    Absolutely worth every penny!

i would need to spend 8 euro a day on the bus otherwise (which doesn't start early enough for me to get to work). which is €40 a week, €160 a month. And that doesn't include if i wanted to visit the folks at the weekend (about 20 quid return on the bus).

Has anyone factored in depreciation? New cars can halve in value in the first couple of years. So if you buy a new car for €20K it's possible the first two years of ownership will cost €5000 per year, or approx €100, in depreciation alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,878 ✭✭✭heroics

    tax is €710
    nct is €55
    insurance €500
    petrol €3600
    tyres €300
    yearly service/parts €300
    tolls €1000
    Total 6465

6465/12= 538.75 per month. 50km each way to work and would require me to get a bus/train/bus if I didn't have the car and the 40 minute drive would become a 2 hour journey on public transport so it is worth every penny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭Titzon Toast

Easily about 400 quid a month all told.
Ireland is an expensive country to run a car in.

About 370 per month average including tax, insurance, servicing, fuel and loan. Hard to call on depreciation as the car is desirable and is a low mileage example so over three years I would expect it to be small enough compared to the other costs. I didn't include tyres as I haven't bought any for a while.

Definitely worth it, I couldn't survive without a car. Even the smallest job like going shopping would be painful. My car is also a lot of fun to drive :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭Fozzie Bear

€180/month for Tax, insurance, diesel, NCT. I service it my self (€50.00 for parts) and deprication is negiable. Car is a 1.9L 2000 Passat and only worth about €1000-1500. Road Tax is my biggest expense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,708 ✭✭✭✭Mr. CooL ICE

    Petrol = 120
    Tax insurance = 748/12 = ~72
    Yearly NCT = 55/12 = ~5
    Various services/repairs = 250/12 = 21

218 per month. While I was paying off the loan for buying it, it was double that.
