How are you grabbing the stream file, I just go into the enigma webif page, press the icon, and open the downloaded stream file

see screen cap, (on windows, but works the same on my linux box)

I installed the plug in in terminal, in the prefences of Mozilla its showing that the vlc plug in is there as its attached to different types of media files.
I can stream no problem to vlc direct by selecting stream icon (e2) or the video pid icon (e1), just I like to use the web x TV.
Perhaps I need to tell Mozilla what plugin to open the stream file with (Mozilla vlc plugin)

All works fine on windows xp and my other mint laptop.

Export firefox settings from "the other mint laptop that works", setup a test user on the first laptop, import the firefox settings, check if it works.
