Did you submit a meter number recently?

Check the current unit usage on the bill against the unit reading on the meter itself. If there is a error, the contact your electricity company.

Seems unlikely that sort of usage is correct in a standard house.

Almost looks as if a decimal place is wrong in the meter reading or something. Were the 1/10th units read as units by mistake?

It is possible that if the last few bills were estimated then, you might have been under-charged till now. If the current bill is one that was from a reading not estimated.

Check if the meter matches what is on the bill.
Check meter on the previous bill or two.

Do you have electric heating? I can't imagine anything else using enough energy to make a bill like that.

Quick calcs shows that you'd have to have 8kW connected 24/7 for 2 months. It is impossible, so it must be a billing issue.

Something is definitely wrong. Either this bill is way too much or your last few have been way too low. Checking your meter should tell you.

Has to be something wrong €2000 for 2 months, 3 bed house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,637 ✭✭✭brightspark

It is possible, but highly unlikely..

11230 units is a little less than leaving an electric shower running 24/7.

How does the reading you took for the bill compare to your current reading?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭micar

Do you have an online account? If so, check the previously submitted readings.

Something is wrong and like the other poster, a digit seems to have been added making the bill 10 times what it should be.

It's very easy to submit a wrong meter. I did that with my gas bill and it came in a €600. I got the correct units used and sent it in and a revised bill was issued.

You need to have a look at the actual meter outside your house.

Yeah looks like you read it wrong or submitted it wrong on the 25th of March.Nothing could use that sort of juice in 2 months. Got a pic of the meter reading right now?

Your meter readings up to then show your usual usage,if your usage habits haven't changed your consumption won't have either.

Go up into your attic and check if you have a few hundred potted plants that you didn't know about, and a dude sitting in the middle of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 pipina

no ,i check many times ,number is correct ,it looks like first number flip from 3 to 4 ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭.G.

Maybe you're reading the second digit as a 9 instead of a 0. Other than that I can't see how your usage increased so much if you haven't used anything you don't normally use.

    no,same usage

could be a fault with the meter?

Could it have gone from 38999 to 49000 rather and 38999 to 39000?

No i always sending actual mumbers, what should i do now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭Doolittle51

It's simply not possible to use that much electricity without noticing. 10000 units in 2 months is the equivalent of having more than 3 electric heaters on 24 hours a day.
I guess it could be a faulty meter. The meter is the property of Electric Ireland. You could get in touch with them to see if such faults ever occur. They have a forum here, one of the reps might look into it for you:

April to January last year my average usage per day was 20 units ( 3 bed bungalow). I queried with Airtricity and they tell me the average consumption per household is 10/12. I now take readings daily to build a database and I have my average down to 14/15 I think mainly because I changed out approx. 50 x 12v halogen down lighters to LED. However average still too high and I cant pin down where it is going.

in my case we talk about minimum of 190+kw p/day,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,931 ✭✭✭PrzemoF

kW - unit of power indicating momentary electrical power usage. i.e. a kettle has power of 3kW

kWh - unit of energy usage i.e. I used 200 kWh last month.

A 1 kW device switched on for one (1) hour uses 1 kWh of energy

A kettle of 3kW power switched on for 2 hours 6 kWh of electrical energy and so on.

I guess you wanted to say 190 kWh per day, so 190 kWh / 24 h gives 7.92 kW of electrical power.

It's roughly the same as an electric shower - it would have to be running non-stop to clock 190 kWh per day.

Have you tried to contact your electricity provider and make a complain that the meter is broken and it went from 38999 to 49000 instead 39000 kWh?

Def a meter issue. Even if you look at the last week (25th March to the 31st march) then the usage has normalized with only 52 units used over that period.

Make contact with airtricity about why you can't pay and what is happening. They can insist the esb networks disconnect you for non payment and the esb networks hands are a kinda tied. They will have to disconnect. If you are talking to them, there is less risk of this happening.
