Here are a few elevation profiles for the courses from last years races on the Saturday and Sunday. I rode out from Finglas on the Saturday so the first part of the pic isn't relevant. Sat is really lumpy. It was torture last year but brought me on a lot. Great little circuit. I love races in NCD.

Sunday's course is all about the power climbers going up Snowtown so make sure you are at the front if climbing is your weakness as you take the left after Stamullen. Great speed going into Naul before you turn left up a bit of a drag. Think the commissaire car got stuck behind a John Deere last year while the bunch rode up the road before Gormanstown college. Crazy stuff. Obviously I condone this sort of behaviour.

If someone rode the courses themselves they can go on mesmeride.com and upload the Strava file for a more accurate profile than the one I've uploaded.

Not sure if Facebook has reached Stamullen yet;), but the format of the races are pretty much the same every year, and the details I posted in the OP were provided by a member of Stamullen. Based on previous years the sign on for Friday should be at a soccer club where the start is shown on the strava map

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,386 ✭✭✭lennymc

Sign on for Friday is in a GAA club, just off the r132. Head through julianstown, pass a garden centre on your left, then next right. GAA club is on the left down the road.

Here is a Google Maps link for Friday's sign-on, which is in St Colmcille's GAA club.

Good fast race, hopefully this year my gear cable won't snap on the start line and leave me with a choice of 53 x 11 or 39 x 11.
Grind, spin, grind, spin, grind, spin, was happy to finish in the bunch.

Yep definitely GAA club - blaming a big bang to my head (and the fact it looked like a soccer pitch on Google earth!!)

Anyone heading to the Friday's race from the Dublin area that has space for a student and his bike? South Dublin ideally (I'll be leaving from UCD) but willing to 'commute' for the lift, North- or Southside. Would greatly appreciate it and obviously chip in for petrol/tolls/etc. PM me please and thanks in advance!

If you were really from UCD then you'd ride over, romp home by a country mile, and then ride back home!

Ha spinning out is my backup plan.

Also riding out and back from Stillorgan to both Saturday and Sunday races so don't want to burn out the legs doing ~160km on Friday!

Unlikely for a Friday evening, but if more than 140 had turned up across all cats they would have had to put on a separate A4 race (or stop people signing on once they reach the threshold I guess)

    Much quicker than Stickbottle!

For the first time in a long time a gang of about 14 of us in a4 worked together really well, up and overs on all the straight bits. Thought I managed to sneak a prime on lap 2 (assuming Gaybo didn't decide it would be allocated elsewhere!) but couldn't hang around long enough afterwards to find out.

Ran outta steam when we were caught by Dowling and Co at beginning of the 4th lap, fair play to the lads who hung on in there until the end. Finished the race with ColinOc and BrenMC, 2 stalwarts of the local club scene!

Good on Stam CC and all involved. Crashy Corner was always going to be Crashy with the drains blocked, it was well marshalled and flagged, glad fallers appear ok overall. These roads are very local to me so it's great racing on them!

Great race, super fast. Was about 10th-15th going into the last corner and 2 guys on my inside went down and I had to go gardening, which brought me to a halt, still managed to get up for 2nd unplaced A4 and nabbed the lap 3 sprint prime, so all in all a successful evening! Thanks to Stamullen CC for a good evenings racing, see you again on Sunday.

Well done to lennymcs protoge who got his first ever jun prize in an open race tonight

My first open race back in 4years. Did some good hard riding in A4 group. Glad to get rid of lots of the dead wood that think it's a sportive after a lap & a bit! Good fast hard racing in the group.

Made it to 1/3 lap to go before I lost concentration & spots up front... Stupidly drifted off wheels & lost the lead group.

    It's a start...

    Mondello next.

Yea, was a good effort in A4 group, stayed away for 3 laps, finally working hard together. Now if only we could get a little group to work like that in an Open race. Really enjoyed that tonight, best race of the year so far for me. Well done Stamullen CC.

As you said yourself, there's many reasons why it doesn't often happen in open races!! Bohermeem we'll launch!

First A4 ive ever been in that there was organisation and work put in. I lost wheels on second last corner but happy I held out that far.....
recognising some names now in this thread after being part of that work group!
Good effort guys....much prefer to go out like that than sit in a bunch all day.
I now know who to look for at next open race. Work like that and it will shred the field!

I always found that people were a lot more willing to work in handicap races. Probably cos they are being chased.

When I did this race a couple of years ago the general attitude of the A4s was pretty pathetic. There were perhaps a handful of us prepared to work and trying to get others to. As a result as soon as we were caught (think it was by the A2s) and the pace was upped I just had nothing left (annoying thing was shortly after I had been dropped the A1s caught them and then the group slowed down - I tried to get back on but just didn't have anything in the tank). TBH my approach was based on my experience in club racing where the "slower" groups always believe they may have a chance of staying away and typically put in the effort to do so (and there is generally a bit more peer pressure from club colleagues to actually work for the better of the group)

Hope the A4 bunch today has a similar approach as yesterday - makes it a far better spectacle, but is also much better experience for the riders than simply trying to sit on and wait for the inevitable catch.

This, and you also know your clubmates better, in terms of abilities and strengths. I know when certain strong riders get in a break, go with them, and when a good sprinter does, go, but make sure to jump him later.

First handicapped race. Really enjoyed it. Was in the A4 group and it was great to get everyone working together. If handicapped races are all like that im definitely going to do more. If only we could get a group like that's working in a race.

Had a nice cycle about in NCD this afternoon. Only got rained on once.
Given the 6 laps, I potentially could have been lapped 5 times, but only the once as I did a warm down lap. Did a few nice laps in an a2 groupetto before that.
We'll run event, thanks to the organisers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,154 ✭✭✭buffalo

It's amazing how soon after the race every lap gets melded into one orgy of suffering. I think this is about right:

    Lap 1: held on okay.
2: popped off the front after the left corner at the school, then went back through the cars on Cottage Hill. Managed to get back on during the Paris-Roubaix section.
    3: held on okay
4: A1/2s catch the A3s, badly positioned, don't manage to hang on to the bunch. Vlad gave me a tow, but my legs weren't up to it.
5: TTing with a Lucan and an Orwell to try get on... cars are *so* close
6: I'm cooked, get in with the chasing A4s

PS but it felt good to be back on a bike and in a race. Despite the hurt.

Tough race on a great circuit. In the A3 group, got in an early break that lasted a lap before we were pulled back. Joined by A1/A2s shortly after that so the pace ramped up a bit.

Tried to stay near the front, latched on to a couple of attacks in the hope of getting away again, but paid dearly towards end of lap 4 when I was hanging on for dear life at the back. Got a rare rush of sense to the head and decided to sit in and settle for an unplaced A3 at that point.

Ended up in a good spot for the lead up to 4th place sprint before a rider ahead of me clipped a pedal off a traffic a cone, uncleated and veered wildly across the road. Cue brakes and swerves to avoid him and the chance of a top 10 up in smoke. Came in maybe 12/14 but got that unplaced A3 so good days work in the end.

Seemed to spend large portions of race riding beside Vlad who's looking fit and riding strong. And got to say hello to manwithaplan at end of race, which is a lot more pleasant than chasing him up hills for 6 laps!

Thanks to Stamullen for a well run race. Maybe a yard brush for some of the corners next year ;-) but otherwise faultless.

Any suggestions on where to watch the race today? Snowtown?

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,456 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Snowtown gives you a close up of the pain they are suffering. Stamullen is where the finish will be. There will be a lot more people hanging around and every chance of a running commentry from Gaybo ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,154 ✭✭✭buffalo

I did four climbs of Snowtown today
1: warmup, "I remember this climb being a lot harder!"
2: Lap 1: dropped by the A1/2s, despite setting a PB for the climb
3: Lap 2: caught by the A3/Jun break at the top of the hill
    4: Lap 3: dropped by the A3s.

Good weekend of racing, wish I'd been in better form to enjoy it. Highlight was a young rider approaching Gaybo Howard to ask him something before Saturday's race, and Gaybo saying over the speaker, "what's that? You're going to sing a song for us?!" :pac:
