Training plans - periodisation

    Forgive me if this has been done before, but what do people here think regarding periodisation/cycling of training plans?

    I know a trainer who recommends, say, 6-8 weeks of max strength training (5-8x5xmax), 6-8 weeks of muscle conditioning (3x20x60%), followed by 6-8 weeks of hypertrophy (haven't done this so don't have numbers in head).

    Do people here train in planned cycles like this or just keep doing what they're doing til it doesn't work and then change it up?

    I'm meeting my trainer friend next week to discuss medium-long term training plans which is why I'm interested to hear where people stand on this. I've read up on what the experts have to say on this, but I don't often see the same patterns in the training logs of "normal folks".
