im pretty curious myself, cant find much on them being so new, but if it works well could be a good box, 2 in 1 is an excellent idea, i wonder do you have to use xbmc to watch tv or are they seperate!
if you would not mind when you do have a chance to give it a run maybe posting back with your opinion?

Looks interesting, the Prismcube Ruby is another box like this I was considering pulling the trigger on, so very interested in reports about this one.
Is there a UK/IRL epg on the Evo ?, that's the main thing that holding me back one the Prismcube, from reading around there doesn't seem to be a working one for the UK/IRL market which is a major drawback and dealbreaker for now.

i know a guy selling these, he said last night he finally got around to setting it up and it works really well, not sure about the epg though ill throw him a txt this morning and ask, because its so new im sure support will be very limited for a while!
    looks tempting though!!

    This is a satellite box

it has a sat reciever built in so you can watch free sat through xbmc!!
just connect you sat cables and away you go.

Got my hands on one a week ago.
Finally got around to setting it up yesterday. Very impressed with the hbmc and lots of add-ons available for that.
It's a bit of a pain setting up channel lists , seems to be no pre prepared lists available at the moment so need to create my own bouquets and move channels in one by one.
Other than that I'm very impressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭ufc pro

wow, very impressed i was not expecting that, i thought it would be a bit slow, does it handle full 1080 streaming?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭same ol sh1te

How does it handle the channels in XBMC, is it using the PVR add-on as Live TV?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,544 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

Any updates on the epg, is it just now and next?

No difference on the Sat end but the reflash brought in lots of pre-installed addons including MashUp and Navi-X which are excellent.

I got one of these and tried the firmware.it reboots when its about halfway through.tried all frimware its always the same.it never installs.i followed the instructions that they give.has anyone had any luck installing the firmware?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭GoodisonPark

Download the firmware and rename it "update"
Insert USB in rear port. Power on while holding down the Vol - button.
When the large Android man appears release the Vol- button.
Firmware will load , box reboots when finished.

Im very interested in this box (about to purchase)
Also have decided against the prismcube due to lack of UK / Ireland EPG

Greatly appreciate any further comments / issues before pulling the trigger
    Especially

HAs no one been able to to acquire an EPG which is more than now and next?
Can TV channels be accessed from over XBMC device?
Any issues with the version of XBMC playback of stored media (HD movies stuttering etc)

Seems to have been recent updates in firmware and downloads - any comments

    Thanks in advance

I bought this box so I thought I would give a review for those interested.

The box is small and silent and looks relatively attractive. It comes without certain features on the factory installed firmware so you must update to the third party firmware which can be downloaded from the Lavatronics website (and the installation was painless). You will not be able to install a certain things through XBMC unless you update to this firmware (the latest at time of writing is June 2014).

The box boots into XBMC. For people who use XBMC already you will see this is a custom version with some features disabled and some added. There are only three skins available - and i would hazard a guess they are there because they are not resource hungry. The other skins will probably slow the box to a crawl or just crash it. This is not a high end device performance wise.

Once in XBMC you have familiar options - music, weather, video, live pictures etc. There are three USB ports to add external storage and this will act as a DVR but you must set the device to default in the device settings first. I had problems with adding shares through SMB but this may have been a home network issue instead of a problem with the box. Adding channels was easy - just do a scan on the right frequency and you should be good to go.

The remote is really cool - it is specifically designed to work with XBMC so you have buttons to toggle beween your various media. Addding plugins went fine - Icefilms works perfectly as does offside streams. Lines can be added through XBMC or on the Oscam web interface but this is pretty tricky - it took me hours of playing about before I worked out which part of the line went where.

On to the problems. The first (which is also a major one) is that all my MKV files which contain dts audio are without sound. The settings which could (perhaps) rectify this issue are not available in the custom XBMC build. The only workaround I have found is to convert the audio on the files to dolby digital with a programme called popcorn convertor. It is not ideal but it is a solution.

The pvr function works but it is buggy. I had recordings in my recordings folder which reappeared after deletion. Re premium pay channels - a message comes up that says 'recording cannot be started, channel scrambled' whether you have pictures or not. There is no solution to this as far as I can see. I can only record freeview at the moment which defeats the purpose really for me.

This box is good in concept but it has issues which need to be ironed out. The DTS audio issue must be fixed along with rectifying the pvr issue. Would I recommend it? Difficult to say for sure because were it not for the two above issues this box would be perfect for me. Hopefully they can be fixed.

Thanks for your review. Is there optical out on the box and is passthrough audio an option in the XBMC settings?

I'm presuming you bought off Lavatronics, the ba$tards who take open source images and channel lists from the community and lock them down. Is the Enigma image available or do you need to sign with them for access (therefore customers only)?

The firmware downloads etc are available to everyone - you dont have to be logged in to get them. There is optical out but almost all the audio options in the newest XBMC custom build (which is wrapped up in the June update) are disabled. I would need to recheck exactly what is available but I am fairly sure the passthrough option is not there. The DTS audio issue is related to hdmi passthrough I think but I can see no way of fixing it without converting the audio files.
The biggest issue for me is the fact that I cant get it to record premium channels.

I should add - there is a native video player outside of XBMC which also wont play dts audio so it appears to be related to the box rather than the software.

And to answer Ballboy's questions - the TV channels cannot be accessed from outside of XBMC (although as mentioned there is a video player). And the now and next in the EPG appears to be all that is available for now. The HD plays fine with no stutters from the external hard drive but as mentioned - there is an audio issue with some files that have dts audio. These can be identified through the skin info and converted.

Got one of these during the week and set it up this morning!

Cool yoke! Using a wifi dongle from an amiko alien and it works grand.

Not used it enough to review it but it seems good! Picons are cool I didn't expec them. The add ons work nicely! Must try set it up for my NAS later!

I already have an MX Android TV which I run XBMC on. My key question is if you reckon this satellite box is more or less high-end than that device running XBMC. MX Android is quite fast, but the remote is clunky enough, and getting an even smoother response from a device running XBMC is something I would definitely go for - more so if it contains a good DVBS/S2 tuner. (Pity it doesn't have DVB-T2 as well.)

If you want this just for XBMC there are far better solutions - this one only has three skins, for example, and does not have the full XBMC but instead has a customised version. It is not quick either. The attraction is the all in one solution - being able to watch and record live tv through XBMC without the need for a tv card or tuner.

Thanks, Murphio. Yes, that doesn't sound quite what I'm looking for. I'm hoping to find a way to run XBMC with a decent cache capability. Maybe MX Android TV is the upper level there (though I imagine it's even better on a modded Xbox One, if that's even possible.)

At this point, I doubt Apple TV 2 is any quicker than how the MX works.

It's put me off the Evo Xfinity if it's sluggish enough - the attraction of XBMC recording/playing back doesn't quite do it for me, as I have a combo MVision HD300 that more than capably records (.ts streams, which do play back on XBMC) already to a networked drive...

A small form factor pc is by far and away the best solution for XBMC imo. It is a dearer solution but you get what you pay for.

Yes, I have an 2-3 year old old, but quite highly spec'd) Toshiba with HDMI Out, which I thought might be worth configuring to boot up and launch XBMC and add in the best Add-Ons etc, wireless keyboard and use that as the primary XBMC.

Certainly not much point buying an Evo Xfinity if the quality of XBMC on it wouldn't be as strong as a PC.

    Cheers for the advice.

Select Audio on remote and enable subs then set as default.
Same if you need to turn them off.

Jury is still out on the Evo Xfinity for me!
Had it a month .... Updated regularly .... Still a bit sticky and not all that to be fair!
Might get rid and purchase a standalone xbmc unit to sit on top of my dm800se if I'm being honest. Still early days but lavatronics do updates all the time.
Finding it impossible to add vpn to it and it does think its a mobile phone which boils my p**s!
So judging on my month with this box.... I'd give it a miss if you want it just for xbmc .... As it's often said..... You can update it all day but you can't polish a turd!
