    www.independent.ie/irish-news/major-revelations-on-recording-of-conversations-in-garda-stations-30124162.html
“In the context of ongoing legal proceedings in a particular case, the Government has learned that a system was in place in a large number of Garda stations whereby incoming and outgoing telephone calls were taped and recorded. The Government was informed of this new information at its meeting today.”

If this means that prisoner consultations with legal advisors were recorded by Gardaí.....oh, dear Lord.

This might make GSOC look like a storm in a teacup.

Devastating if true. Callinan certainly knew what he was doing "retiring" this morning before this information came to light.

So many questions will need to be answered but I wont be holding my breath.

It'd make for a good enough tv show which could be presented by Paul 'the dragon slayer' Williams.

At this stage I'm wondering if there is anyone in Ireland who holds a position of power who isn't corrupt?

Why how many of them have been proven to be corrupt?

Seems to me this is just a giant **** sandwich with Alan Shatters name on it

I would imagine it is difficult to remain uncorrupt and keep your 'position of power'.

I wonder how long this was going on? Why did it stop? Did Shatter know about it? I wonder what Paul Reynolds thinks about the behaviour of his man crush Callinan now?

IT reporting that it has been going on for years, but stopped in November 2013. Very recently...why did it stop is a very relevant question indeed, and who made the decision to stop it.

As pointed out in the thread in Politics this practice was apparently known about before now it just didn't make as significant headlines back then

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=89624004&postcount=1074

I wasn't aware of it myself back then. But it does make one ask why such the uproar now if GSOC made the practice public months ago?

Paul Reynolds is nothing but a mouthpiece for the guards, zero credibilty.
And people here complain about the inbalance in Fox news, maybe they should look closer to home.

"From the information available, the practice of making recordings was in place for many years and was discontinued in November of 2013. It is not yet clear why this practice was in operation.

I wonder how many different governments were in power during this time?

I always found him to be a complete knob but the way he was going on about Callinan today was unreal. You would swear he was talking about Mother Theresa :)

Are you sure you're not mixing up your Pauls? Paul Williams sound exactly like the guy you describe.

Paul Reynolds is RTE crime corr.

wouldnt surprise me if most likely Garda management were trying to catch out Gardai using the phones for their own private phone calls.

Why? This appears to have gone on for several years, likely before this govt was formed and the government have put it in the open and established an enquiry. What should theyyy fall over?

the Government has learned that a system was in place in a large number of Garda stations whereby incoming and outgoing telephone calls were taped and recorded.

Wait, wait just a second. Calls were taped AND recorded??!!!

I mean if they were just taped OR recorded that wouldn't be so bad, but both!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,299 ✭✭✭✭The Backwards Man

Was this not common knowledge? I know in my area we always knew which stations to ring if we needed something done as they were the ones that had the calls recorded.

BREAKING: Inquiry set up into taping of phone calls from Garda stations

How serious is this revelation, objectively speaking, e.g. legal ramifications?

It seems to me this revelation has been released very strategically, as Shatter will have to resign regardless if he was aware or not aware of this in November 2013 when the recording practice was discontinued.

E.g. Shatter you know the way you have to resign this evening anyway, will you resign over this instead?

How the f**k could this go unreported if it was happening since the 80s?

But wouldn't a solicitor have to prove the recordings were used to influence due process?

I'll give you child rape, Magdalene launderies, collusion with drug dealers and planning corruption. You can go figure after that. It's kinda cultural..at this stage

    No. Those are privilidged communications.

If they were being recorded it would mean the Irish police had for years been breaching the European Convention on Human Rights Act of 2003!

    this could be monumental.

that's good , I was stitched up by AGS back in 2005 and got a conviction out of it ( which was struck out )

the vast vast majority of the irish media are unequivocally pro guard ( paul Reynolds included ) but paul Williams actually owes his entire career to leaked stories , in turn he comes out to bat on a regular basis for AGS

    I am pro-society and pro-professional policing.

    I am also anti-corruption.

These endless revelations are as much a slap in the face of pro-police people as they are of anti-police people.

If this is true as is being described there's no end to the ramifications.

Did the rank and file Gardaí know of this carry on?

I've spoken to two just now and they didn't. So it was not universally known.
