I read in todays Indo, that newsreader Michael Murphy is likely to finish broadcasting in 3 months when his contract expires. He says that RTE wont renew his contract as he is too old. Perhaps I am alone on this, but I consider him to be the most professional radio newsreader in the country. A lot of the so called. ' young pretenders ' could learn a lot from him.
Its typical of RTE to come out with this sort of ageist crap when it suits them. The bottom line is, if you are good enough for the job, then age doesnt matter

These guys are on contract pal...they earn good bucks...company is entitled to discontinue contract.

This guy has been pursuing other areas ...counselling..RTE gave that end of things a few free plugs recently.

Michael's personal philosophy, as explained many times on John Murray show, is to look after number 1 and to hell with everyone else.

He favours a dog eat dog approach to life yet thinks he is entitled to automatic rolling renewals of his contract?

    Taste of his own medicine

He should've kept his mouth shut and his head down, instead of spouting all that ridiculous psychoanalytic psychobabble on The John Murray Show and that TV show with Daithi Whatshisface and Maura Derrane. He lost all credibility with that.

He has a great voice for reading the news. Probably the best newsreader in RTE. They'd be very silly to get rid of him.

....the public are entitled to spread the jobs and work in RTE around. There are more deserving and hungrier people around than Michael Murphy who deserve a chance to grace our national airwaves.

RTE did not overly suffer over the "loss" of Pat Kenny. They could also do with losing a few more overbearing and over paid "celebrities" and give more average people a share of the airtime. A rotating schedule of people making a salary of,say, €50k each rather than one person slurping down €500,000 per annum in a pig-like fashion would be more appropriate for a public broadcaster.

I'd be inclined to agree with you except for two words - Lottie Ryan (et al)

RTE has always been a cesspit of nepotism. I think he deserves to be shown the door, to be honest. He's either a newsreader or a shrink. He obviously thinks he's the second coming of Freud these days, so presumably he'll set up his own practice and make shedloads of money......... ;)

This must take the biscuit for internet comments. Fail to see why reading the news on weekend early mornings precludes him from doing someone else during the week.

I know they say only women can multi task but I think you are taking it to extremes.

'Fraid I have to agree...Harry has let himself down a little bit by that comment.

    A rarity in fairness...

What boils this posters pee is the sense of entitlement of these people..they are on contract...there are certain advantages to that...there are certain disadvantages...one of which is that the contract can be terminated !

When Kenny left RTE did the world stop turning ? No....his time slot is now filled by the excellent Sean O'Rourke with little if any listener loss.

Let's not forget what this guy Murphy is ...a newsreader...competent admittedly..but just that ..a newsreader.

True but unfortunately he is a better reader than most of the full time employees they have so he is actually talented at what he does.

I agree with Harry completely... there was one morning I heard him on with John Murray discussing Lance Armstrong.. As was mentioned above, he's very zero tolerance when it comes to people's behaviour, and he told John Murray exactly what he thought of Lance Armstrong and his apology.

The next day I heard him reading the news, which involved a story about Lance Armstrong! he read the story in his usual professional manner, but you couldnt help thinking "Hhe's reading from the script here, but I know what he REALLY thinks of Lance". And if the newsreader cant deliver the news with full objectivity then he shouldnt be at the job... maybe he could move on to liveline.. :pac:

I always thought he was an excellent newsreader, but as soon as he started airing his opinions on news matters and his psycho-jiggerypokery, he should have resigned.

actually no were not, it needs to be about how good the person is
    doolox wrote: »

maybe their not more deserving, maybe they are, either way, they don't "deserve" a chance to grace our national airwaves, they have to earn a chance to grace our national airwaves by being tallented, you can be as hungry as you like but at the end of the day it will ultimately be how good you are.

luckily, i suspect though many people followed him to newstalk but change back to radio one afterwords.

they may bring in the listeners though, if they don't then i agree they should get rid, and who says their "overpayed" one persons overpayed is another persons fantastic wage which one would take if offered it
    doolox wrote: »

they do give average people airtime, and they are giving more average people airtime on 2fm.

who says, maybe your right, but they do have to offer a good wage packet to try make sure they get the best talent over the commercial broadcasters, pat kenny excluded as i never thought he would go to newstalk.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

Ah c'mon, everybody is just something. Any job can be broken down into its simplest terms.

A council worker just fills potholes.
A receptionist just answers the telephone.
A teacher just sits stands at the top of the class and talks for a few hours.
Cranky people just post negative comments about RTE every day.

I went to a secondary school awards night a few years ago and Murphy was the guest of honour (for which he was well paid and put up in a hotel with his partner).
He got up to speak and proceeded to bore the audience with anecdotes of how brilliant he was. Never once did he address the pupils or remark on their achievements or even refer to them. The whole borefest was like a book promotion. He finished by reading for 10 minutes (seemed like 10 hours) from his book. The "highlight" was when he referred to himself as the "best newsreader in the country" and a few people laughed assuming he was being ironic.

    He wasn't.

I dread to here him on the news , whatever the headline news is , even something mundane , he always makes it sound like he's announcing Armageddon.ok, his pronunciation is good but one gets the feeling he loves when there's a French word to say as he seems to relish over pronouncing the French , and probably ends up sounding more French than the French themselves .

In fairness, he does have the ability to say "Good morning" in a tone that makes you want to reach for the out-of-date iodine tablets.

Have never heard him on anyones show, refuse to watch/listen to progs on rte.

Agree rte is filled with nepotism. Lottie ryan seems to be the start of the end fir rte.
have to assume she's as useless as her father.
Rte's loss in getting rid of good people over the last number of years

Hah, great story chooch... You should ring in with that one the next time he's doing his "questions for the psycho-analyst" section with John Murray...

"Hi Michael, I have a dilemma. We are having an event tonight and there's a guest speaker coming that nobody likes. He's self indulgent, conceited and basically just a complete bore. He will dominate the conversation without regard for anybody else... Should I ring him and tell him that I dont want him to attend"...

I'm guessing that zero tolerance Murphy's answer will involve a gun and a couple of bullets..

...and 'Good Afternoon' by squeezing about five syllables out of 'Afternoon'. I can do a really good impression of him, but nothing like Frank Kelly's, complete with false beard and several lateral jaw motions when pronouncing 'Gardi'.

The only other RTE contractor I've seen pull the "I've gotten a better offer elsewhere and I'm off" announcement on a live programme was Twink on a episode of the Live Mike back in 1979. It backfired horribly. She is still among us.

When John Murray asked him about his new contract and he mentioned that he'd be making 'Pay Kenny' type money I had to stab randomly at the car radio, listening to the cricket on R4 was more agreeable. As a broadcasting professional, one doesn't air either one's dirty, or clean linen. It's very bad luck.

I think Murphy has got above his station.. I got the feeling that he was trying to prove to us all what a talent "professional" he is.. But the newsreader should read the news and not draw attention to themselves, so in that alone it was unprofessional... Also, I still cant hear him reading the news without thinking of the zero tolerance advice he was giving on The John Murray Show, and imagining him exchanging letters with the people he is speaking about....

    "Dear Michael,
I am thinking about leaving my job. My hips are at me and I'm not getting any younger but I would feel like I'm letting the family and the country down. What should I do.
    Your Amigo.
    JJJJuaaann Caaaarlós"

    "Dear JJJJuaaann Caaaarlós,
F**k your family, and f**k Spain, you have to do what is best for you. And dont invite your son for Christmas dinner either, he's only a b*ll*x.
    Yours Unfogive-ingly,
    MM"

Very ironic how he described being able to discern the character of a broadcaster if u listen very closely to how they speak. You do not have to listen too closely to Mr. Murphy to be able to psycho analyse his. He studied that too you know? In France if u don't mind? France!

Just heard the RTE News there doing their review of the papers....

"Psychoanalyst Michael Murphy features on the front of two newspapers, as he discusses his time at RTE. He was the man who first brought us the news of The Dublin / Monaghan Bombings, etc etc etc"..

Thought it was very odd that the organisation where he worked for decades as a newsreader should refer to him as a psychoanalyst... Unless of course he asked them to refer to him as a psychoanalyst.
