I heard somewhere it's a bit cramped and the seating is fairly tight.

Don't know much more than that, sorry.

edit; I also heard someone else say it's huge, so who knows really?

    Its huge?

If you are tall the seating is very cramped, has lovely toilets though.

Agree with that. Absolute arse quality live sound.

    Gorgeous venue all the same.

Great spot for a gig. Always liked it.

The seating is awful. It was designed when people were obviously much much shorter. I'm only 5'10" so quite short and my knees were scraping off the seats in front.

That said, that was in the circle. I'm not sure if they're different seats on ground level as it's removable for certain concerts.

The seats downstairs are very cramped, but it's a great venue. I've had many a great night there.

    Better when it's standing downstairs.

I love it but I always get standing tickets for gigs. It's probably my favourite venue to go to.

I was there but then Zeus cast me down to earth again. Baxstard.

Hate the seating and would never go to it again, seats designed for small people end of ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 957 ✭✭✭MonsterCookie

Good venue, although acoustics could be better. I saw Paul Weller, the stranglers, Billy Bragg over the years...oh and jedward (kids pantomime...honest,).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,925 ✭✭✭✭anncoates

    Billy Bragg .

Not in 1988 by any chance? :)

    Great gig.

I've only ever had standing tickets so I don't know what the seating there is like. I think it's a nice intimate venue and I don't think the sound is that bad. I've always liked the old-style, classic interior, gives it a bit of character.

I have many great memories of this venue. I was there for the last night of R.E.M's 5 night stand, which they turned into a live album. Amazing. Chris Cornell, The Mars Volta, Placebo, Mogwai.....

    Great gig.

I think it was 1990, as he was celebrating Margaret Thatchers fall from power all through his set!

    I think it's a good venue. I believe it's haunted though

I hope Garth Brooks is not reading this thread, he will be wanting to perform 29 and a half concerts there.

It used to be a good spot when the rugby was played in there. But ever since the retractable roof broke it's really only been good for the ten pin bowling. Still I've been to a lot of bowling venues around the country and the Olympia is by far the best.

It's been rumoured that it will be top of the ticket when the ITPBA launch their bid later in the year to host the 2019 world cup of TPB here

I love the way you can see the stage from the bar.

I have no legs and thought it was cramped.

Great place for a gig. At one time they took the front seats out. Haven't been in a long time. Used to love the Midnight at The Olympia gigs.

If you stand at the entrance to the bar directly behind the sound desk you can get great sound.

Yeah it's kind of disturbing to see people head banging when they are sitting down. Noticed it when I saw The Waterboys there a few years ago.

You went to see Fall Out Boy?

and you complain about the quality of the venue?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,675 ✭✭✭HighClass

It would be a great venue if wasn't for the massive barrier in the standing area. Having pit passes for a venue that size is pretty stupid.

A great beautiful venue. Have seen many great gigs there.. Band Of Horses, Paul Weller, Ryan Adams, REM, Joe Strummer, The National..... I could go on...One of the highlights is always just being in that venue itself. Having said that I always go for standing unless I can be guaranteed a seat in the front couple of rows as I don't like to be that far from the action... Never thought the sound was bad... If you wanted bad sound the old Point Theatre was your man... Brutal...

Always liked it as a venue. Even lived beside it for a while. Saw a few great gigs there: Muse, Faith No More, Stone Temple Pilots, Tenacious D, Australian Pink Floyd....

I saw Motorhead there a few years ago. Lemmy had a sore throat and the Olympia acoustics weren't suited to speakers turned up to 11. And I don't like Motorhead. Not a great gig.

My absolute favourite venue. Seen some grat acts there ranging from heavier acts such as Queens of the Stone Age, Machine Head, Avenged Sevenfold to more poppy acts such as Fall Out Boy and All Time Low earlier this week.

Great venue, seating or standing. But if you are planning to be up the front or near the front, ear plugs are essential!

Ok, The Olympia is a Good Venue.
What about the types of people seen outside it?
what do ye think of them? Genteel / Rough? /Hip ?
    This is AH afterall.

I like it but it depends on who is playing there.

Saw the Villagers there and it was amazing. The crowd was eerily quiet while they were playing and the sound was unbelievable. Was seated for it and it sounded as if the lead singer was about 10 feet away.

Its a cool venue for intimate gigs, and I've been there for standing and sitting (seen Phil Coulter and Jimmy Carr for seated gigs). My only problem is that the balcony restricts your view if you're too far back.

Never liked it. Seating is too tight and in a lot of seated areas you can barely see the stage... and it smells like piss.

Going to Neil Finn there month, not excited about it. At all.

Deffo my favourite spot for a gig in dublin. Midnight at the Olympia used to be great and over the years have seen some great gigs there.
Pints in The Oak before hand, pints in The Globe afters with your ears still ringing.
The staff tend to be sound too. Got a hand written few set lists after some concerts from them.

Midnight at the Olympia used to be great craic. Tanked up and/or in a slightly altered start watching some dodgy Beatles/Doors/Pink Floyd tribute bands.
