I have a friend and a good while ago she informed me that she suffers from depression. I am the only one that she told. I highly recommended getting help and taking medication but she won't listen to me at all about that and she is adamant that getting through this by herself is the way to do it. I'm not sure why it is but she just wants to try solve it by herself without meds or counselling. She is a very smart girl and has alot going for her. However she is going through some tough times in her personal life at the moment and more tough times lie ahead. It's tough being in this situation not knowing what is the best thing to do.

It's normal for people to want to avoid the medication route for something like depression and people often think that counselling won't do anything for them. All you can do is suggest she give it a try, just once, and see how it goes. If she gets something from it, she's more likely to go for a second session.

Exercise can improve mood in people with mild to moderate depression.
Try and join a weekly dance class, or bootcamp or something/anything that encourages regular physical activity.
You could help her without her even knowing about it.
