**MOD EDIT merging player of the tournament threads as new one has the poll of official candidates

I was going to make a "team of the tournament" thread, but I realised it would just be a whole lot of Irish players :D

So who was your player of the tournament?

For me its Rory Best. He was phenomenal in every single game he played.

For single handed impact, Mike Brown.

For consistent excellence, big dev, with special mention for Trimble.

Huget deserves a mention but hard to argue with Brown.

Toner and Ross from an Irish perspective.

Find it hard to not give it to Mike Brown, has had some tournament in fairness. Never seen a year like it in the championship for Fullback play actually.

    Andrew Trimble, Ireland
Jim Hamilton, mainly for the line "I have to stand up for myself"

    Danny Care, England
It has to be Mike Brown, he was the single best player in the competition.

For Ireland- Toner was our best player, most consistent. But Ross, POM, Kearney and Trimble would all be in with a shout too.

For England, Danny Care and Courtney Lawes were the closest to rivalling Brown.

    But yeah. Brown.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 587 ✭✭✭sillyoulfool

    Rob Kearney without a doubt.

Mike Brown without a doubt, had a fantastic tournament and was a joy to watch at fullback.

Mike Brown would be my choice.

Not even a debate, Mike Brown getting 3 MOTM awards and deserved every single one

    Mike Brown, then Toner

Trimble for me. Improved every week and today he was immense. I think it has to be a special player that's mentioned by a coach like Schmidt in a post match interview.

It'll be interesting to see who Ulsters wings are in the coming weeks.

Joe Schmidt by a mileeeeeeeeeeeee closely followed by Plumtree

Its a true testament to Toner that he is many people's Irish player of the tournament having not been considered first choice in the Autumn, and having many people question his status as a professional rugby player in the recent past. Has been immense throughout the 6 Nations!

Brown will obviously win but excluding him best player from each team:

    England: Robshaw, Burrell or Care.
    Ireland: Dev, Ross, POM
    Wales: Warburton.
    Italy: McClean or Ghiraldini.
    France: Huget.

Great job of narrowing it down i know;)

Player of the Tournament - Mike Brown
Irish Player of the Tournament - any amount of them, Best, POM, POC, Trimble, etc but Toner was the most improved or at least proved his doubters wrong

Mike Brown for me - the thing about Ireland it was a team thing - Toner, POM, Trimble, Kearneys, BOD, Best, Ross, Healy, Heaslip , Henry, Johnny, D'Arcy, Murray, Reddan, McGrath, Heaslip, Henderson

POC probably had his best game in an Irish jersey today , immense ,eclipsed the great BOD today

    3 - Peter O'Mahoney/Devin Toner

On the front line POC, no question.

I also think Rob K was immensely under appreciated in this tournament. He was there when it mattered every time.

    Danny Care, England
For me it would be either Mike Brown or Trimble, think BOD might have robbed him off a few MOTM awards.

Few crucial missed tackles blotted R Kearney's copybook. POC was immense thorough this tournament for Ireland. Seeing him leading the huddle at the start of the second half today was inspirational.

That said, Mike Brown probably the stand out player over the past few weeks.

The best player was Mike Brown. For an English back that is some effort.

My pick of the Irish players are the ones that had questions marks over them pre-tournament: Trimble, Toner & Ross.

Overall, the standard of the whole 6N was quite poor - Eng & Ire were consistently very good, but the rest went up and down like a yo-yo, Italy rolled over today, France finally stood up, Wales comprehensively lost to the best 2 teams, and then there's Scotland...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 468 ✭✭Gidea

Maybe its just me, but i dont see how people are claiming best to be one of Irelands best performers. He was solid and consistent all tournament and didn't do much wrong, but he's played much better before in green

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,876 ✭✭✭✭bilston

    Sam Warburton, Wales

Well he did today, last week it was probably Sexton who was robbed, but I doubt either Trimble or Sexton would begrudge BOD it. I'd say the Six Nations winners medals they now have is fair compensation.

    Mike brown.

Lots of people coming up with different names for Irish Player of the tournament. That in itself is a great thing in my book. It shows that everyone performed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,586 ✭✭✭Ardillaun

I have to say Brown even though I've knocked him in the past. He did everything well.

Another question is which player would Ireland have missed the most i.e. individual merit divided by competitive alternatives. Ross still looks useful.

Brown delivered in the hard games and the Easy ones. He's a rare player, he always performs
