SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A massive fire was burning at a building under construction near AT&T Park in San Francisco Tuesday.

The blaze was reported at 4:56 p.m. at Fourth and China Basin streets in the city’s Mission Bay neighborhood, according to a fire dispatcher.

The fire was reported to be up to four alarms as of 5:30 p.m.

The fire was across the street from the Strata at Mission Bay apartments, according to a spokeswoman for Sares Regis, which manages that property.

Black smoke from the fire was billowing above the area and was widely seen around the Bay Area.

KPIX 5 photographer Joseph Cousins said the fire was spreading to more than one building.

Watching video footage of it. Looks monstrous and is relatively close to the Golden Gate Bridge.

    And now the weather.
Dry with clear skies in many areas. Turning cold overnight with a sharp frost developing, as temperatures fall to between +2 and -2 degrees. Mist and fog forming in many areas also as the night goes on. Thickening cloud in some southern areas could reduce the frost risk there later in the night.

If it makes it across there'll be no stopping it. They'll have to blow up the bridge.

For anyone that actually cares, it's gotten worse.

Now a 6 alarm fire not 5 by the way and flames hitting over 12m high. Over 100 fire fighters trying to manage it now.

What the hell is a 4/5/6 alarm fire?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,339 ✭✭✭Artful_Badger

Can you expand on this system of classification by "alarms" OP ? I never heard of this before but I'm eager to figure out how to use it when talking about my stove...

Does anyone else know what a 4/5/6 Alarm fire is?

Category of response so how many companies/units etc will respond to it. Category 6 is ridiculously high.

They should shoot the fire, that's how they solve all their problems isn't it?

The Mission District is nowhere near the Golden Gate Bridge.

    Fantastic burritos down the Mission.

It's a pity the fire isn't in the Castro Area.

Yeh I had a look and it isn't really that close to the bridge at all. Would take a hell of a fire to reach there.

It was a genuine question. I didn't know what a six alarm fire was or why companies would respond to it. Made it hard to appreciate the story.

Yeh I should have said Station not company (not sure how I mixed those two up) so I assumed you picked up on that. Considering there was enough posts ridiculing the idea of a fairly horrendous fire I took it you were too. My bad!

Actually I take that back it is very close to the bridge.

It's the AT&T park which is only blocks away from the bridge.

$227 million apartment project due to open later this year.

Expected to be completely destroyed. Reading that they're beginning to get it under control now. Not really sure how much it's spread though.

I suppose you'd wonder how it started and if an insurance claim might be a reason.

Shouldn't the heat have melted the steel structure by now and the whole thing have fallen?

It hasn't just pancaked down as a result of the entire steel structure melting?

    Damn!

I thought that's how steel structures fell down.

Is there sh1t on those girders to prevent them from liquifying?

If it does fall down in a minute will it prove that 911 wasn't an inside job?

Depends on the type of structure and how many supports collapse I'd imagine.

You're seriously sh1t at this. One post was a funny observation. Now it's just desperate.

Did people really not understand the term 5 alarm fire? Maybe I watch a lot of American Television, but I'd considered it a term in common parlance.

"Common parlance" isn't even common parlance.

And no, nobody knows wtf five six and seven alarms have to do with a fire.
