as the title says, is there an android based equivalent to the ipod touch?

I'm looking to get my son an mp3 player as he's getting into music and thought it would be great if he could put games on it also via wifi.

basically a non phone, phone sized mini tablet he can use for both games and music.

A phone with no sim card would do the trick.

The nexus 7 I think would be the closest.its a bigger screen than the iPod touch, but its great for music and games and movies etc. And....its cheaper.

nexus 7 is a bit big for the pocket though?

That what we use an old phone. Make sure its dual core though. Single core is too slow.

There also this, but a iPod is cheaper.

Samsung used to do a Galaxy Player which was exactly what you are looking for, but it was discontinued.

Samsung (The Apple of Androids) actually do them.

They're basically a Galaxy S3 or S4 without the phone capabilities. My brother had one.

I think they're just called "Galaxy Media Player". Not sure though. Cost a cupla hundred, from what I remember.

i'd imagine sound quality would be crap on that.

that's the only one i could find when doing a bit of research, but was hoping there'd be more out there like that

You'd get a sansa clip mp3 player and a nexus 7 for the same money and have much more functionality.

I agree, but the OP has said N7 too big to carry around, just giving him another option.
I think his best bet would be a phone with no sim card.

AFAIK it was more like the much older Galaxy S single core cpu. I'd say it would be a bit laggy for recent games.

The Sony is primary aimed as audiophiles.

While I prefer my Sony Walkmans to the Clip and Zip iI have. The noise cancelling and the Radio for example. The F886 is just too expensive for me. A kid isn't going to notice any difference in SQ. Most adults won't either.

You could always go for a Moto G (150 euro), and just not put a SIM in it.
